Aspen and White Poplar

February 28th, 2009
by Audrey Christopher

Members of Lawson Cypress genus are natives of North America and Asia. Best known in Europe is the Lawson cypress, introduced there from America in 1854. It has a narrow, conical crown and reaches a height of up to 60 metres. It greatly resembles the ‘arbor-vitae but differs from them in having pendulous terminal shoots, with reddish- brown, scaly bark, narrow white markings on the underside of twigs, and scale-like needles. The greenish female flowers are borne on the tips of the shoots. The cones, green at first, mature in September when they open to release the small, winged seeds.

The black poplar is a tree of riverine forests and requires abundant light and a high level of underground water for good growth. In commercial forests it is today being replaced by the Carolina poplar (Populus canadensis Moench.), a hybrid between the black poplar and the northern cottonwood (P. deltoides). It is distinguished by rapid growth and is cultivated in plantations. The black poplar produces abundant stump suckers and is also propagated by cuttings. The pyramidal form Populus nigra italica (syn. pyramidalis), the Lombardy poplar, is widely planted in parks and alongside highways. The light wood is used to make plywood and cellulose.

Of the Asian cypresses, the one most commonly found in Europe is the sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera Sieb et Zuec.), which has a great number of ornamental forms.

The white poplar grows in moist lowland woods, sometimes by the waterside. It extends from Spain through central Europe to southern Siberia, growing to heights of up to 30 metres. It has a thick trunk topped with a broad rounded crown, and the bark is smooth and greyish, but blackish and fissured at the base. The annual shoots are covered with whitish-grey down, including the small buds. The dioecious flowers appear at the end of March and the seed capsules burst in May.

The juniper is a dioecious species, i.e. individual trees bear only male, or only female flowers. Inconspicuous, they are borne in the axils of the needles, maturing after two years into blue-black berry-like cones.

It is an attractive ornamental, with whitish bark, and nearly rhombic, 10 cm long leaves, which appear on the tree in early spring.

Austrian Pine and White Cedar

February 28th, 2009
by Kaylee Savannah

The Austrian pine is a native of the Mediterranean countries, Spain, Calabria, Corsica, Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor. The natural northernmost limit of its distribution was originally Austria, but today the Corsican and Austrian varieties especially are widely cultivated for their rapid growth, and high quality wood, in western and central Europe.

The Weymouth pine grows rapidly and well up to the age of a hundred years. It is very resistant to frost, requires moderate light and thrives in moist, light soils. It has proved excellent in the improvement of poor, degraded soils, and does well even in city parks. Its most serious enemy is the disease caused by the fungus Peridermium strobi, which produces resinous blisters on the trunk, retards growth and may even kill the tree. The Weymouth pine yields light, brownish heartwood used in making doors, window frames and other products of the carpenter’s trade.

The jack pine is widespread in Canada and the north-eastern United States, where it grows chiefly on poorer, sandy soils. It was introduced into Europe in 1785. In the late nineteenth century it was widely planted as a forest tree because of its resistance to fungus diseases, and its rapid growth in youth. However, it was found that after the fortieth year the rate of growth declined rapidly and the bole became crooked; so the initial enthusiasm soon waned.

The jack pine reaches a height of only about 20 to 25 metres and has a relatively short life span, about a hundred years. It forms two whorls of branches each year. It differs from the Scots pine in having short, pale-green needles, black bark with scaly ridges extending up to the crown, and small, strongly incurved cones.

The Arolla pine has thick, rust coloured, downy shoots and needles clustered densely on the twigs. The cones take two years to mature and when ripe in September they fall to the ground where they disintegrate. The sweet oily seeds are a favourite of birds and rodents. New individuals grow from the seeds they drop on their way, often far from the parent tree. The Arolla pine has a slow rate of growth; not until after its sixtieth year does it begin to flower and bear fruit, but it attains an age of several hundred years. It is adapted to the harsh, mountain climate and stands up well to frost, windstorms and heavy snow. The wood is strong and light, and was formerly used to make furniture and carved objects.

Because of its fairly infrequent occurrence, however, it is now a tree protected by law, and an attractive ornament of our high mountains. The related form Pines rein bra sibirica Rupr. grows in Siberia.

Dog grooming is important: Do it yourself to save money

February 28th, 2009
by Todd Martin

If you have a pet subsequently you will be in charge for taking care of him moreover one of the most crucial aspects of health & care is dog grooming. All grooming wants quality dog grooming tools for instance, combs, brushes and clippers that can be found at all pet supplies stores.

If you take your pet to a qualified dog grooming service center which is a good option it can at times be extremely costly. It is not something which cannot be done at home i.e., it is possible only if you have the time as well as the equipment. The foremost thing is that you should be exceptionally patient with your dog throughout the dog grooming session and remember to reward him once it is completed so that you don’t face any trouble the next time around.

The second important thing is buying the right pet supplies to enable grooming at home. The different types of pet supplies that you will need for grooming includes: – Bathing accessories: This will mostly include hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner and towels. Clippers: This will consist of pet grooming tools like turbo clippers, clipper kits, combs, trimmers etc. Others: This can include an array of pet grooming tools like nail grinders, Furminator de-shedding tools, Styptic powder, Matbreaker dematting tool, dematting combs, dematting rake, flea comb, area slicker brushes, undercoat rake, etc. Dental toothpaste: this is an often-overlooked necessity when buying pet supplies. Dental problems in cats and dogs are one of the most expensive veterinarian costs during a pet’s life.

Dog grooming is significant for all pets but more for dogs with lots of hair. Dogs like German Shepherds boast double coat moreover experience lots of hair fall and therefore must be groomed frequently. A few of the significant parts of the body that have to be cleaned and groomed include the skin and ears also it is a must to clip the nails for dogs.

Cleaning the ears of dogs is an integral part of dog grooming because of the fact that they get a lot of infections through their ears. Dogs with droopy ears are highly susceptible to different types of ear problems and infections caused by ear mites, waxy ears, and fungus. You need to check the ears of your dog once every week and clean them as well. Another important part of dog grooming is clipping nails by using a nail trimmer like Little Pals Nail Trimmer and this is mostly done for dogs, as their nails can grow unusually big. Although they will never hurt you with their nails but are quite capable of scratching you while playing. You need to clip nails once every 3 weeks.

The one thing that most pets hate and dogs even more is bathing. Except for the Retrievers almost all dogs hate taking a bath. But bathing is also an important part of dog grooming. Before you give your pet a nice bath, ensure that you have the necessary pet supplies like shampoo, conditioner etc.

Is It Possible To Lose Weight in 3 Days With The 3 Days Diet?

February 28th, 2009
by Slim Slater

The 3 Day Diet dates back to 1985 and today can be found all over the Internet and on book store shelves. The three day diet and its variants boast quick weight loss, a cleansing of the system, lower cholesterol and increased energy all through a specific metabolic reaction that no version of the diet has ever proven.

The diet is to be followed for only 3 days, with an off period of about 5 days in between diet times. All the versions of this diet share in common detailed steps that must be followed and foods that must be eaten in order for the diet to work. What better way to blame the dieter when it doesn’t work than you botched the formula.

Breakfast on the first day comes with coffee (no sugar), one half a grapefruit, and a piece of toast with 1 Tbsp peanut butter. For lunch, you are to eat a can of tuna, a piece of toast, and black coffee. For dinner it’s 3 ounces of chicken or lean meat, a cup of green beans, one cup of carrots, one apple, and one cup of regular vanilla ice cream. The other two days are about the same but with some substitutions such as hot dogs instead of lean meat. The diet crows that weight loss of 10 pounds is achievable over the 3 days that the diet lasts.

Baloney! How’s that for specific? And no baloney is not part of the diet. There is no evidence for the so-called specific metabolic reaction. The only reason this diet would shed pounds is because of the lack of calories in the diet. In fact, because the diet is so low in carbohydrates a person could lose ten pound in three days. Of course most of that would be water weight because carbohydrates encourage the body to retain water. By the way, losing that much weight from not retaining water is dangerous as the body needs water to survive.

Once the three days end the weight will return, primarily because it’s mostly water. But also because any weight lost from the skipped calories will be regained when the starving diet victim returns to normal, or in this case heavier than normal, eating. Deprive the body of water for three day cycles enough times and a person could develop kidney damage, dehydration, or a host of other dangerous conditions.

The 3 day diet is best treated as a no day diet. In other words, don’t do it.

Important Info on Trucking Insurance

February 28th, 2009
by Steve Turner

Most people don’t realize it, but trucking insurance is much more complex than auto or homeowners insurance. There is a lot of information that must be compiled to ensure you the best deal. However, most companies that offer trucking insurance have gone to great lengths to make the buying process as fast and as simple as possible.

As an insurance company assesses your premium, one of the factors they will consider is your driving history. If they see that you have been a risk in the past, you will likely receive a higher premium. Likewise, discounts are given to those that have a clean and respectable driving record.

Claim history is another factor that is assessed as you are assigned a price. If you have filed a lot of claims and have cost your past providers a lot of money, your rates will increase. You will be charged more because they will assume you will file more claims with them.

It is more cost efficient for the future to pay for a scratch yourself rather than trying to get your insurance company to do so. Also, because an applicant’s credit is considered for each insurance policy, paying the rest of your bills and being financially responsible will lower your premiums.

In addition to personal information, other information will be considered as you shop for insurance. The rig you drive and the cargo you haul factor in to the insurance price just as heavily as the safety of the driver. These, however, are harder to control than the personal factors.

If you are driving an older truck in poor shape you are more likely to break down or get in a truck-caused accident. Insurance providers will charge you more because of this. However, if you have a safe truck that is well-maintained you won’t have to worry about this increase.

Other than your truck, your cargo is the other thing considered as they assess your rig. This can be broken in to two sections: comprehensive and liability. Your comprehensive prices will vary depending on the value of your cargo. Liability will vary depending on what it is that you haul; it can vary from a minimum of 750k of coverage to 5 million depending on if your cargo is hazardous or harmful.

A Yeast Infection Can Be Managed Quite Simply

February 28th, 2009
by Alan S Redman

Yeast is a kind of fungus that the body produces naturally. This kind of fungus, scientifically named Candida, is harmless to our body. But if the system becomes unbalanced and the amount of fungus increases, you can have a yeast infection.

Yeast is usually found on the human skin especially in the areas that are moist, like the mouth, vagina, rectum and the digestive system. According to estimates, 20%-50% of women that are healthy normally carry yeast in the vaginal area.

An excessive amount of yeast can cause itching and a burning sensation. In a lot of cases, yeast infection happens in the vaginal tract called Candidiasis. This is identified by a thick, white discharge that looks like cheese and may smell like bread. A lot of women suffers recurring yeast infections that usually begins during their teen years and stops when they reach their mid thirties.

Some of the classic signs of a vaginal yeast infection are vaginal itching and an odorless, white vaginal discharge. However, these symptoms can sometimes be misleading because discharge is not diagnostic. You certainly have an infection if you are experiencing intense itch and a white discharge occurs.

But in most cases, women also have discharge during an increased estrogen at mid-cycle or at the height of an increased production of cervical mucus. Other possible signs include vaginal soreness, rashes on the vulva around the vagina, abdominal pain, burning during urination, pain during intercourse, and even vaginal bleeding.

The usual treatments for a vaginal yeast infection include application of a vaginal antifungal cream, tablet, or several days of suppository. Oral treatment, or taking tablet by mouth, is usually required for a recurring yeast infection.

Oral treatment, or taking tablets by mouth, can have effects for the entire body. Vaginal treatment, however, can only cure the genital area and but may not cause any possible side effects. You can experience headache, nausea and abdominal pain with oral medication.

A vaginal boric acid can be used in treating yeast infections. Nonprescription vaginal medications are also available. It is possible to treat your own infection. But you have to be sure that you are not pregnant and be very certain that the symptoms that you?re experiencing are like the ones you experienced before. You would have to consult a physician in case your infection keeps on recurring.

Pregnant women are the often targets of yeast infections. In case you are pregnant and suffering from an infection, avoid using any medications and consult a physican immediately.
