An interesting character was presented to me yesterday on the bus. It was one of those times that it felt that a message was coming to me from the Universe. It was like he was brought to me to send me on some sort of adventure. At the time, I was traveling from the capital city of Costa Rica, San Jose to the Cloud Forest community in Monteverde. We had both boarded the bus at the Alajuela Bus central. The was that we got on was filled with people.

I noticed that there was only one seat on the whole bus available. I worked my way towards it, carrying a big back pack through a ver narrow walkway. As I got closer I put the backpack on the overhead container and then took a seat. I was so happy that I did not have to stand up for the whole trip! The man sitting next to me warned me to keep my eye on my stuff. Apparently there are problems with people taking your stuff if you are not careful.

I am no fool, and I gladly took his warning and kept very present to my things while at the same time talking to this interesting fellow. He mentioned that his name was Jeff, and that he had lived by the Cloud Forest in Monteverde for over 12 years. In turns out that he came to Monteverde as a backpacker, just like me. He came because he was told that there was employment available for guides that spoke English and Spanish. He was lucky enough to come to Monteverde and find work as a Zip Line guide. we had great fun talking for the whole ride about all the experiences he had had.

When he first arrived there was only one Zip Line operating. It was called the Original Canopy Tour company which birthed the whole industry. The designer of this tour attempted to patent the whole thing, but was unsuccessful. This was the birth of the zip line tour industry in Monteverde.

Jeff explained that the feeling of moving through the canopy is a rush of joy and fright. There is something about the idea of experiencing those very physical , Fight or Flight feelings while in the setting of a deep jungle that wakes the animal instincts, he told me. That experience, surrounded by such a new perspective.. above the forest, in the canopy, is unsettling and altogether unique.

I really appreciate these experiences that provide me with a new way to see things. So I decided to go check out the Zip Line tour company which he recommended to me. I figure, hey I am on vacation, I want to experience the extreme! I want to feel the excitement of flying through the forest in a way that humans, until now, had never done before.

Well it was absolutely amazing I must say. Nothing that Jeff said could have prepared me for the feeling I had the first time I jumped from one of those platforms.
