I come from a long line of firefighters. From my Great, Great Grandfather all the way down to my oldest son, our family has carried a proud tradition of fighting fires to protect American folks. Even after 22 years, anytime I hear a siren my heart races. I can tell by watching my father that he also feels the urge to get to work protecting America’s families each time a siren calls. Because of his dedication to firefighting, when it came time for him to retire, I knew I wanted to get him a gift he’d treasure the rest of his life.

I went to the internet and began to search for anything related to firefighting. All the typical things were there, like model trucks and firefighter’s hats. They were too cliche to grab my interest. I really considered getting him a pole from a demolished fire station I found online. As I thought about it, though, I wasn’t sure where he would keep it or if he’d want something like that in the house. Would my mom like it? Their house isn’t huge. Firefighting isn’t the most lucrative career choice. However, my parents did have a lot of land, so I thought that if I could find something that could go outside, that might be a better choice.

My younger kids climb up on the truck and listen as their granddad tells them stories from his days as a firefighter.
