Getting started with a charm collection is a great opportunity to find a never ending option for gifts to mark special occasions. Charms and charm collecting is popular with everyone from young children through to seniors since it is both personal but also a wonderful tradition. Charms in different collections can take on different themes or they can a true combination of all types of themes and topics.

The type of metal that is selected when starting collections of charms will have an impact on the overall appearance of the bracelet. Silver charms are very popular with old and young alike and they stay dazzling and brilliant with very little specific care. Slight darkening in different areas of the charms only adds to the beauty of the silver.

Gold charms are also popular and may be ideal for evening wear or sporty outfits and events. Since gold is very easily matched with almost all colors it is a versatile color for bracelets.

Charms are always just gold or silver. Other types of embellishments such as semi-precious stones, diamond chips and even crystal can be added to give a lot of flash and color.

With a particular color for charms in mind, the next decision is what type of charm bracelet to select. Link styles will vary greatly between bracelet and some of the double and triple links offer lots of options for attaching charms.

Italian style charms and charm bracelets are ideal for those that want to have endless possibilities to mix and match charms. These flat, tile like charms can be simply and easily taken on and off the bracelet, allowing a new configuration as often as you want.

With the bracelet selected and an understanding of silver, gold or a mixture of metal types for charms, the second to last step is to select a theme. Charm bracelets are often based on a theme such as sports, hobbies, animals or careers, but they can also be a collection of travel locations or other activities.

The very last step in starting a collection of charms is to notify all your family and friends that you are now a collector. If you have a theme bracelet be sure to let them know so they can include charms as gifts to add to your collection.
