POS Systems Are More Than Just A Cash Register

October 9th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

POS stands for “point of sale” and it is general used to describe the computer used to check out customers. It used to be that these machines were simply cash registers that rang up sales and provided a safe place to store the cash, checks or charge slips that your sales generated. These days, like most other things that are run by a computer system, they do much more than that.

Inventory Control

One of the biggest advantages provided by the modern day POS systems is the help they can offer you by tracking your inventory levels. No matter what the size of your business, keeping track of what items enter and leave you store’s inventory is an important part of running an efficient business.

Knowing exactly what items are selling and in what quantities makes reordering much easier. Instead of guessing what items you will be needing in the future, which may well lead to excess inventory and wasted profits, you can only order what you actually need. Inventory tracking can also let you know what items may be walking off your shelves without being paid for. Shoplifting costs retail businesses large amounts of money each year and knowing what items are being stolen will allow you to take steps to stop the theft.

Modern POS systems provide an easy way to keep your inventory tracking under control. By linking them to your store’s inventory system, they can provide you instant data as to what is being sold. Each item has an individual bar code. When it is scanned by the POS system, the information about that item is automatically entered into your inventory control system.

Payment Types

Another advantage to today’s POS systems is that they will allow you business to efficiently process many payment types. It used to be that smaller businesses could not easily process credit card and check payments. This meant that the business either opted not to accept those forms of payment or accepted them knowing that there was a possibility that they would never actually receive the payment as it was hard to verify the accounts.

Now the systems that process checks and credit cards are an integral part of many POS systems. When a credit card is scanned, the account information is not only taken, but it is verified. If the account had been compromised in some way, the card is declined. This saves your business and possibly the person who has had their account compromised from taking a loss.

The same thing happened when a check is run through the scanner. Although not all systems can verify that the account has enough of a balance to cover the check, they can at least verify that the account exists and that it is currently in good standing. Although this will not protect you from checks that bounce it does keep you from accepting bad checks.

Like so many other technology based items, the number and quality of the services that your POS system offers you has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few decades. If the system you are using is more than ten years old, there may be a great many advantages to your business if you update your POS system.

How Often Should Make Up Brushes be Cleaned?

October 6th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

One of the biggest questions that is asked by people that apply makeup on a regular basis is how often they should be cleaning their makeup brushes. The answer may be surprising to most while not surprising at all to others – You should clean your makeup brushes as often as possible.

There is no real right or wrong answer to this question, because your makeup brushes are not going to go stale or anything if they pass a certain date, but when you have dirty makeup brushes, dirty powder puffs and dirty sponges, you should realize that a lot of bacteria has been accumulated. Even if you apply makeup after you cleanse, your skin will still have some sort of oil, adding even more bacteria to the tools. If you don’t clean your tools on a regular basis, they are not all together very good for your skin.

In many cases, some makeup application tools like powder puffs and sponges are simply disposable, and so you can simply replace them as needed. Puffs and sponges typically do not dry out very well after they are cleaned and so it would be simpler and more cost effective for you to simply replace them as needed. The same is not true for your cosmetic brushes however, especially if you are working with a quality caliber set.

A dirty makeup brush is going to be not only unhygienic and bad for your skin in general, but also much more likely to worsen breakouts and rashes and other skin issues or to cause more in general. What this means is that you are going to want to clean your makeup brushes fairly regularly in order to remove the build up of makeup, oil, skin cells and bacteria. For most people who apply makeup casually from day to day, cleaning all of your makeup brushes once every two to four weeks is generally going to suffice. If you apply makeup much more often or if you are reapplying several times on a daily basis, then it would be wise for you to step this schedule up a bit, cleaning your brushes weekly or at least biweekly.

There are a number of different brush cleaning options that are available on the market. There are two excellent brands of makeup cleaners that are well worth bringing up, which are Pink Soap and Master Brush Cleaner. Both of them are capable of cleaning your brushes really well and rinsing out easily. You are going to find them in any high quality art supply store or cosmetic store.

It is also possible for you to simply use a high quality organic shampoo product. Make sure that you allow the brushes ample time to air dry. It is not recommended that you use artificial means to speed up the drying process because heat can damage your brushes in the same way that it can damage your own hair. Heat may also cause the glue binding the brushes to their handles to melt, which can cause the brushes to fall apart or otherwise become destroyed.

How Long Does It Take to See Results with Personal Training?

October 6th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Personal trainers help people plan and implement a fitness program to lose weight and strengthen and tone their muscles. They also help motivate their clients to stick to their goals.

Because each person is different, the results of working with a personal trainer will vary. As long as you follow the fitness program designed by your personal trainer and follow a healthy diet, you can generally begin to see results in about one week. It is not recommended that you follow your progress using a scale because when you are engaging in a fitness routine created by a trainer you will be toning your muscles. As you burn the fat with your workouts, it is being replaced by muscle, so the scale does not reflect your actual fitness progress. It is recommended that go by how your clothes fit and your energy level. Generally speaking, following the fitness program created by your personal trainer, you can reasonably expect to lose 1-2 pounds of fat per week. Personal training programs also promote healthy weight loss that can be maintained by increasing metabolism and decreasing body fat.

You should begin to feel the results of your personally created work out almost immediately. A significant increase in strength and noticeable loss of weight can be seen in about 4 to 6 weeks. It is important to be aware that weight loss does not happen over night. The benefit of having a personal trainer is that he or she will keep you motivated while you work to achieve your desired results.

Most personal training programs are one hour long and are modified and enhanced as your strength and endurance increases. This allows your workouts to remain strenuous, but not overwhelming. The physical benefits that you receive when working with a personal trainer include: increased endurance, increased toning, improve muscle imbalances, increased flexibility, improved posture, strengthened lower back, improved coordination and balance, and building bigger muscles.

The health benefits of having personal trainer include: increased bone density, increased cardiovascular-endurance, decreased risk of diseases, increased good cholesterol (HDL) and decreased bad cholesterol (LDL), reducing aches and pains, reduce stress, and boost metabolism. As well, you will have a boost in your immune system, improved blood circulation, decreased risk of injury, nutritional advice and meal planning, improved motivational habits, improved confidence and self-esteem, improved sleep, increased sex drive, burn more calories, and improved overall health.

Encouragement is a part of achieving fitness success. A personal trainer will be there with you every step of the way to cheer you on. A personal trainer can introduce new types of exercise to target to your goals and will be there when you feel frustrated. It is important to remember that a toned body and weight loss does not happen overnight. It is important to be patient and follow the advice of your personal trainer. Having a fit and healthy body takes a lot of work and strength of mind. A personal trainer is there to help you achieve your desired results.

Win a Speeding Ticket and Avoid Years of Trouble

October 6th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Getting a speeding ticket can be a very frustrating and expensive experience. You will have to have to pay the fine, have demerit points applied to your driver?s license, and you will see your insurance premiums rise. Before you accept and pay the fine, you should consider fighting and winning a speeding ticket to avoid years of trouble.

Demerit points are normally applied to a driver?s license after a moving violation. When one accumulates a certain amount of points, they can have their driver?s license suspended. A speeding ticket fine can be a big financial blow to a driver. They can be hundreds or even up to a thousand dollars. Sometimes police officers make errors when handing out moving violation tickets. Fighting and winning a speeding ticket may help maintain a clean and honest driving record.

If you are given a speeding ticket by an officer, the following are a number of tips to help you win and avoid the consequences of a speeding ticket:

1. If you plead innocent, you will be given a court date for your trial. On the trial day, you will be given a chance to talk to the prosecutor and explain your situation. If you have a clean driving record, you can often work with them to negotiate a lesser judgment to avoid demerit points being applied to your driver?s license. This will save you money because the insurance company will not raise your premiums.

2. When receiving a ticket, avoid making any statements of guilt as it can be used against at your trial. Don?t come up with a wild excuse as it will only hurt your chances of winning in court.

3. When you are given the ticket, ask for as much information as possible. This includes the type of device used to detect speeding and its serial number. Ask to see the display of your speed on the radar unit.

4. Check your ticket for any inaccuracies. There may be mistakes that can help your case or get the ticket dismissed, such as an error in recording the license plate number. Don?t tell the officer. Take the ticket and leave.

5. If you have a camera, take pictures of the area where you were stopped. Note anything unusual such as a difficult to see speed limit sign.

6. Draw an illustration of the area where you were stopped and where the officer was located when he or she used the device to record your speed.

7. You have to be sure that you have a good case to beat the ticket in court. One of the best ways to know is enlisting the services of a defense attorney who has the knowledge and experience with fighting speeding tickets on behalf of their clients. They know the “fine points” of moving violations and how best to present a winning case.

It can be of great benefit to fight and win a speeding ticket. It can result in keeping your driving record clean, preventing an increase in insurance premiums, and preventing the expense of a high fine. Consulting with an attorney that specializes in moving violation will help in determining if you have a case and your chances of winning.

Causes and Hair Loss Treatment

October 6th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

There are numerous causes for hair loss and despite what many people think, this condition can occur in women as well as men. Treating baldness starts with understanding the different types and causes of the condition.

Male Pattern Baldness

Men who develop male pattern baldness are often time genetically predisposed to the condition. Unfortunately, they have mom to thank since this problem is passed on to the male child from the mother.

Why does the hair shed and eventually deplete itself? The issue starts when the hormone testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This conversion takes place when the 5-alpha reductase enzyme is formed. DHT adversely affects the hair follicles and in time can stop hair growth altogether.

This is usually a gradual process that affects older men but even males as young as 15 can start permanently losing their hair.

Female Pattern Baldness Hormones and certain thyroid conditions can cause hair loss in women as well and this is more prevalent than one would think. The American Academy of Dermatology indicates that over 30 million women in the U.S. have experienced some form of hair loss.

The culprit could be a medical condition like hypothyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome. Women can also, like their male counterparts, develop androgen hormones like DHT, testosterone or androsteinedione that destroy their hair follicles. These hormones, while prevalent in males, also exist in smaller amounts in women. Sometimes, in women predisposed for this kind of baldness, these hormones attach to the hair follicles and disrupt normal growth patterns.

Hair Loss Treatments

There are many hair loss treatments on the market today for both men and women. Those who wish to treat their condition without chemicals may wish to look for products with all natural, chemical free ingredients. These organic hair treatments are not hard to find, especially if you do an online search. With a little investigation you should be able to locate something that works well, is affordable and has very little, if any drying effects or drawbacks. Many over the counter treatments are topical in nature while others come in the form of a pill.

Another alternative is the hair transplant, but such surgery can be costly. Also, if not done right, a hair transplant could make the problem worse by looking fake and causing issues like infection or something worse. When it comes to hair loss correction, and organic hair loss treatments in particular, it is best to go with a topical or oral regimen as this can be controlled. That way, if an adverse reaction occurs you can simply stop taking the medicines and go a different route.

See Your Doctor If:

There are certain medical conditions that can prompt sudden, significant hair loss and should be explored. Both men and women alike should seek medical analysis if their hair comes out in huge clumps, sheds on their pillows or slips down the drain in bunches during a shower.

A quick check up may reveal a quite harmless treatable condition that, when monitored, may even aid you in your desire to restore you mane to its former glory. Just be patient and keep in mind that the process will take time and effort on your part. When you use the right organic hair loss treatment however, you will have real and lasting results. You will also discover that you have an all natural hair products ally in the fight against baldness.

Simple Obedience Techniques for Puppies

October 6th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Getting a puppy is an exciting time for both the family and the puppy. When a puppy comes into a home, it will be exposed to a variety of new sights, sounds, and places to explore. This can be a very overwhelming and stressful time for the little critter. It is important for the owner to help the puppy adjust and become a well-behaved adult dog. This will involve teaching it to listen to your commands and desensitizing it to new stimuli.

Most puppy behavior experts say the critical learning period for a puppy is up to the age of sixteen weeks. The following are a few simple obedience techniques for training your puppy during this period:

1. Positive reinforcement is a key tool to obedience training. Punishing your puppy will only teach it to fear you and act aggressively to others. Using positive reinforcement as a reward is an essential part of teaching your puppy to be obedient. This can include a food reward, affectionate attention, and a toy as a reward. Praise will make a dog feel loved and more secure.

2. It is important that your puppy becomes desensitized to new environments. Take it for short walks through the streets to help him get use to the new sights, sounds, and people.

3. Reward positive behavior and ignore unwanted behavior during puppy training. Ignore such unwanted behavior as barking, pulling the leash when walking, and jumping on you. Just stand there until it stops and then continue on with the regular routine. When your puppy performs a wanted behavior such as walking next to you or sitting quietly, reward it with praise or a puppy treat. Clicker training is a type of positive reinforcement training that acknowledges that the dog has behaved properly. The “click” sound acknowledges the good behavior. The “click” sound is made as soon as the puppy performs the wanted behavior. As soon as you make the “click” sound, you can reward the puppy with a treat or praise.

4. In order to ensure your puppy does not grow to be an aggressive dog around children, you have to socialize it with children at an early age. When the puppy is around children, praise and reward calm behavior. Allow the puppy to be touched by one child at a time, and don?t force it to be touched as this will only instill fear.

5. A car drive can be a scary time for a puppy. They can vomit, drool, or urinate. Your car should be a comfortable and fun place with familiar items such as its favorite toys and blanket. Take it for a short drive at first and then gradually increase driving time.

6. To teach your puppy to sit, get him to stand in front of you. Show the puppy the treat and let it smell the treat. Move the treat from his front to his hind end. As he watches the treat move to the back end, you should put the treat closer to the floor. The puppy should automatically sit its hind end down. When it does, immediately reward it with the treat and praise.

When properly training your puppy, the reward will not only be a well behaved dog, but you will have a loving and loyal friend.

What to Expect at your Next Speech Pathologist Appointment

October 6th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Speech is the production of sounds for the purpose of communication. It involves the use of the lips, tongue, teeth, palate, vocal cords, and lungs. Speech language pathology deals with problems with communication and conditions that make it difficult for a person to swallow. When one engages in speech pathology therapy, they will learn techniques and exercises to improve verbal communication.

The following outlines what one can expect when attending a speech pathologist appointment:

The first step is for a Speech Pathologist to acquire an assessment of the patient. This will include taking a patient’s medical history to get an accurate account of the nature of the speech problem. The speech pathologist will also observe the patient to get a sense of the problem. There may also be some simple tests given to the patient. The assessment appointment can take anywhere from 1- 2 takes hours. If it is a child that is being assessed, the parents will be actively involved in the assessment process.

Depending on the communication or swallowing problem, tests can include: repeating sounds and sentences for recording, taking an x-ray of the side of the palate, using a scope with a light to enter the nostril for visual assessment.

Once the assessment has been completed, the speech language pathologist will write a report based on the findings of the assessment. If required, the report can be given to other health professionals, parents, and teachers.

With a child, speech language assessment can involve playing with the child and asking parents a number of questions. The speech pathologist will assess how the child behaves and interacts with him or her. Other tests for a child can include showing the child toys and pictures and asking questions to evaluate the child’s responses. There may possibly be more than one assessment appointment for a child depending on the complexity of the problem.

After the assessment, the speech language therapist will tell you what he or she recommends as a course of treatment. This can include a therapeutic treatment plan, or a referral to a specialist such as a hearing specialist. Regular therapy can be a weekly session. A therapy program will be implemented that focuses on the patient’s problem. The purpose of therapy is to improve communication. There may also be at-home therapy exercises one can use when not at a therapy session. The therapist will record the patients progress and make adjustments where necessary. The scheduled appointments are usually once a week for an hour.

Speech language therapy is the treatment of a speech disorder such as problems with the production of sounds, understanding others when they communicate, or problems putting words together properly when one communicates. In Canada and the United States, a Master’s university degree level is the accepted standard of education. Many speech language therapists work in such areas as child language, learning disabilities, developmental delays, autism, enunciation, fluency, voice, swallowing, dementia, strokes, and brain injury. Assessment of the patient is essential to recovery. Speech Pathologists play an important role in helping patients overcome their speech language problems.
