Have you ever tried to perform a local job search and couldn’t find any legitimate job openings within a reasonable distance of your location? That seems to be a common flaw with some job search websites.

Not every website functions the same, so it’s important to find the one that will be most helpful for you. Some are very detailed in their search criteria, while others only let you search very broad categories.

Those limitations can have a negative effect on your local job search though. I’ve used job search websites that only allowed me to search a minimum of 30 miles away from my location. That was not very helpful when I lived in the suburbs and relied solely on public transportation.

I don’t think I’m alone when I say I prefer to use sites that let me choose very specific categories and distance variables. However, some of the job search websites out there don’t offer these options.

When I ran into these kinds of problems in the past, I would check out the local newspapers and classifieds. However, not all local businesses advertised in the local media. So I continued to have trouble.

More job search websites are catching on to this flaw, and they have been correcting the problem. They offer more variables in the distance-search option, or they let you input the city and/or limits yourself.

It’s not even just the distance criteria that needed work. There are some job search websites that are offering all sorts of new search options and tools. I remember when many of the sites only had a handful of search options, which then led to hundreds of jobs popping up on your search.

I’ll be on the lookout in the near future to see how many of these resources improve the navigation for users. More job categories are appearing these days, and those seeking local jobs need better options.

General Motor’s recently announced bankruptcy only stretches the problem, as the tens of thousands of layoffs will only add to the already lengthy lines in unemployment offices. Job websites are limitless on the Internet. Indeed, there’s just too many to count. A job search engine, however, connects these limitless sites, delivering only the jobs that best fit the specifications and demographics of your unique search. Job search sites make the game simpler, giving you a list of possibilities that are manageable, so you don’t get washed away in a sea of results.

Finding a job is a full-time job with no regular paycheck. You need to find a paying job quickly so you’ll have income you can depend on. When you streamline the process, you become that much closer to landing a successful new career with the security to pay your bills.

Not that you should ignore the newspaper classifieds. Job search sites, however, compile the classifieds of newspapers across the country. You can scan thousands of want ads in a single search with the results right at your finger tips.

Career search engines also help find those job openings that aren’t well advertised. The search engines scan the job websites that contain the lesser known but lucrative possibilities. You get the complete selection of opportunities, including those rare jewels that are hard to find.

Narrow down the search as your broaden your opportunities. In this challenging economy, the web has become the networking tool to access the lesser known opportunities. Job opportunities exist online, indeed in such a large number you’ll need help sorting through them all. Simplify your search with all the tools the Internet has to offer. Narrowing the search makes it manageable and digestible. Don’t get washed away in the results. Simplify your selection to find the right career online. The future is your’s to discover.
