What Your Vegetarian Diet Could Do For Your Health

January 2nd, 2010

More and more of us are cutting meat out of our diets and turning towards a low fat vegetarian diet. Many people are now starting to realize that vegetarians enjoy many health benefits above what meat eaters experience. As a result of this, more supermarkets are stocking a good range of vegetarian options and products and at restaurants you generally have a variety of menu choices that do not contain meat.

The chief benefit that you will enjoy if you are following a vegetarian diet is a better health outcome. Vegetarians are estimated to consume about 25 percent less saturated fat in their diet. This means they rarely have problems with obesity or type II adult onset diabetes.

Vegetarians generally have healthier diets and the low levels of animal fats that are consumed means low levels of blood cholesterol. Over time cholesterol can build up in the arteries and stop blood from flowing and circulating effectively. This places pressure on the heart that can lead to heart disease, stroke, angina, heart attack and more.

It has been shown over and over again that a vegetarian diet can protect the body from certain types of cancer. Cutting meat out of the diet can reduce the risk of some cancers by at least 50 percent. Many fruits and vegetables are enriched with vitamins that have antioxidant powers capable of eliminating free radicals and toxins from the body. Cruciferous vegetables are especially powerful.

Eating a vegetarian diet that does not include meat also helps your digestive system. Animal products tend to be very dense and are difficult for your stomach and digestive system to break down effectively. After a while your digestive system can become less effective at eliminating waste and this can potentially cause stomach, colon or intestinal cancers to form. Plant based foods are much easier for our digestive systems to deal with and eliminate effectively.

Aside from the health benefits associated with vegetarianism, not eating meat products is also much better for the environment. Much of the Amazon Jungle is being destroyed to make room for beef cattle farms. By not consuming red meat, you are doing your part to reduce demand for beef and help reduce the significant detrimental effects that cattle have on the environment.

Recent environmental reports have stated that meat production is one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution and habitat destruction in the world. It produces water and air pollution, land quality degradation and the loss of various endangered species. This is a clear and compelling reason to scale back your meat consumption or stop eating meat completely.

If you follow a low fat vegetarian diet, you will get the benefit of many health outcomes. On top of this, you can do your part to reduce damage and destruction of the global environment by cutting out meat on a vegetarian diet meal plan.

3 Astounding Benefits of a Raw Food Vegan Diet

October 27th, 2009

A raw food diet is one in which at least 75% of food consumed is not cooked (above a temperature of 115F). The consumption of “living” or raw food has myriad benefits. Here are three.

Benefit 1 – Rapid Weight Loss

It is a widely studied fact that consumption of raw food results in rapid and drastic weight loss. The reason is incredibly simple. Raw plant foods have a very high fiber to calorie ratio. They are packed with very filling fiber but are comparatively low in calories. As a result, people on raw food vegan diets eat as much as they feel like and still lose weight.

Benefit 2 – Improved Health

Beyond the benefits of weight loss (i.e. less chance of heart disease and diabetes) there are even more health benefits to a raw food vegan diet. Such a diet allows us to consume vitamins, useful bacteria, and helpful enzymes which are normally killed in the cooking process. The result is that raw food vegan eaters have seen higher levels of energy and have experienced much easier digestion.

Raw foods lack the preservatives and refined sugars of modern processed foods and the low energy sluggish feeling that accompanies consumption of such types of food. Hence a raw diet can drastically improve your health and lifestyle.

Benefit 3 -More Environmentally Friendly and Ethical

Most meat eaten in the United States comes from CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feed Operations). These mega feed lots have an atrocious environmental impact and are known for horrendous animal living conditions. In the contrary, an organic raw food vegan diet takes people out of the CAFO system and provides them with food that is ethical, healthy, and better for the earth.

Note: B12 supplements are required in a Vegan diet

So be healthier, look better and do something that great for the planet

Proper Diet and Exercise for a Longer and Healthier Life

October 7th, 2009
by Jesse Regan

Thanks to high technology, many difficult things before can now be done easily. From modes of transportation, to communication, and even to common household chores, ease and convenience has been achieved. Now, people can just sit in front of their hi-def TV for hours as their main form of entertainment. Even their office jobs have become simple with the use of computers while factory workers no longer have to use much of their strength as they rely more on automation. Consequently, people have also become more physically inactive than ever.

That alone is bad news but what even worsens it is type of food many people prefer to eat. Most of todays food can no longer seem to do without ingredients with inorganic origins. What are most prominent; however, are the generous servings of fat and sugar in every meal. These two happen to be the main causes for heart diseases and diabetes yet still many people cannot let go of these. It is only when they reach their forties that they realize how their neglect for good eating habits has badly affected their health, which in some cases are too late.

It is only reasonable that a counter-trend has been ongoing for years. This calls for physical fitness in various ways. One of these is the promotion of diet or slimming pills and food supplements. Although some of these have been proven effective, some also have unwanted side effects. For one, these sometimes introduce unnatural chemicals to the body. Two, it merely reduces ones weight but it does not actually keep him fit and healthy.

Your key to achieving a healthy body that can guarantee you a longer life is the combination of proper diet and exercise. With these, you do not have to take in orally anything but food and you certainly do not need to undergo an operation. The combination, instead, would lead you out of your sedentary lifestyle and bad eating patterns in the safest way. If you do both, you are guaranteed to get a fit body quickly.

Eat healthy and low-cholesterol food and keep away from those greasy fast-food meals. This is the most important aspect of a proper diet. Instead, it encourages you to eat food that contains vitamins, nutrients, and minerals. Of course, eat only to satisfy hunger and not to be stuffed. Surprisingly, it is lenient to the frequency of eating. It does, however, keep a check always on what you eat.

Exercise is needed to burn cholesterol and to hasten weight reduction. Workout routines like the cardio and weight training require the body to use up so much energy, which means spending most of its fats as fuel. Cardio routines are most effective in weight loss and builds up ones endurance. Weight training, on the other hand, develops the bodys physical strength. It aids in toning the muscles to replace the fat lost. One should take some caution though in performing some routines to avoid injuries.

These are just a few golden nuggets about weight training diet you can find online.

Ten Steps to Prevent Bruising, Step 6 – Obtaining Your Essential Nutrients!

October 6th, 2009
by Carolyn Cooper

Aging may bring a tendency for bruising easily, but this condition doesn’t mean that you have to accept this situation as hopeless. If you really desire to prevent bruising easily, you will need to explore the variety of supplements that may be able to help you. Knowing which supplements will work for you the best is somewhat tricky; however, for many people, bioflavonoids and bilberry supplements offer a great deal of promise in helping you to control your easy bruising.

Since easy bruising can be a tendency that develops as you age, we should examine the particular causes. Some people’s skin becomes more fragile and contains less collagen as they grow older, while other people have to deal with the fact that their capillary walls are thinner and more frail than they were before and thus more likely to sustain breakage. Once you have determined why you may be bruising so often, you’ll be able to seek the particular supplement that provides you with the best results.

Even before you can pronounce the name, you need to determine what bioflavonoids actually are. Bioflavonoids are basically just plant pigments that can be dissolved in water, with about 4,000 of them that have been named to date. They are present in a variety of plant products including, grape seeds, teas, apples, grains, nuts and more. When you add bioflavonoids into your diet, you will be taking positive steps toward becoming a healthier person.

Bioflavonoids contain significant anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, and antiviral properties. This means that bioflavonoids can help enhance your general health, and the anti-inflammatory properties can provide significant benefits to keeping your circulatory system operating optimally, and this benefit will enhance your healing capabilities. Reduced bruising and reduced muscle sprains are other benefits gained by adding bioflavonoids to your daily routine.

Besides citrus fruits, another great source of bioflavonoids comes from bilberries, a fruit bearing, shrub-like plant. Not only are bilberries typically delicious, they are often used in treatments for everything from certain forms of illness and inflammation. Bilberry helps prevent hardening of the arteries, which then helps make it easier for you properly control your blood pressure.

Despite the great taste, using bilberry supplements to help you to reduce your easy bruising is probably your best path to take since consistently obtaining the fresh fruit is somewhat difficult. Bilberry supplements can be found in many different varieties, so just head to your local health food store and check what they can provide for your needs.

You do not have to be a person who simply decides to live with bruising easily as you grow older. With the proper information available to you, you can learn how to overcome easy bruising, and that condition can then become nothing more than a fading memory.

Determine how you are going to use bioflavonoids and bilberry properly to help you overcome your easy bruising. A unique daily supplement program like Bruises Be Banned contains the proper amounts of these two nutrients along with other necessary vitamins and minerals for you to finally be able to prevent bruising altogether.

The Energy Boosting Benefits of Acai Berry

October 6th, 2009
by Maxine Schill

This is probably the supreme claim for acai (ah-sigh-ee) is the excellent energy boosting properties of the berry juice and supplements that have been confirmed by many who have used it. Many claim to notice the results in just one or two weeks of the intake of the product. The feedback of the users suggest increased sound sleep, sharp mental skills and digestion.

It may sound a little far fetched but did you know that these fruits contain more protein than an egg? They contain multi vitamin and have a high concentration of lipids ” the energy booster noted earlier. Even the levels of antioxidants are greater than 30 times higher than in grapes and wine, which have been publicized for several years as a healthful supplement for cardiovascular health.

The cholesterol levelers found in the acai berry far outstrip any other natural supplements available today. The importance of this little berry can be evident once you see it contains antioxidants which are good for heart and blood circulation.

And it doesn’t stop there. The absorbtion of important oils into connective tissue is encouraged by the vitamins and minerals found in the ’super’ food. What does this mean? To get to the point, the body takes in increased amount of oil needed for muscle regeneration and flexibility ” great news for people suffering from arthritis and related diseases.

You just have to add this little magic berry in your diet to make it more healthy. Don’t you want to have more energy, have a sharper mind, feel more awake and know for certain that your heart is receiving a daily boost?

Although these claims have not been confirmed by doctors or scientists, it can’t hurt to try the juice or supplement. Blood Pressure, Cholesterol level and weight should be taken before starting to monitor yourself in a month or so. In this way you won’t have to wait for someone else to tell you that you are getting healthier!

Creative Ways to Prepare Eggs for Children

October 6th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Eggs have always been a popular and healthy food for the entire family. When eaten in moderation eggs are a healthy source of protein. Eggs are especially popular with children. If you are looking for creative ways to prepare eggs for your children, below are a few recipes that you can try:

1. Make some toast and add butter. Cut a hole in the middle of the toast. Fry or poach an egg and place it in the hole. With a glass of milk and fruit, you will be giving your children a healthy and delicious breakfast.

2. Scrambled eggs have always been a very popular meal. You can add some flavor to it by mixing in a bit of soup broth when you are mixing it. You can also add a little bit of spices and sprinkle some shredded cheddar cheese in the eggs while you are cooking.

3. Cut an English muffin or bagel in half and toast it. Poach an egg. Once the egg is poached, place it on half of the toasted bagel or English muffin. Pour a little pizza sauce on the egg. Add a slice of pepperoni or salami and top it off with mozzarella cheese. Put the other half on top and you will have a delicious sandwich.

4. Omelets are very popular. You can spice it up by adding salsa and grated cheddar cheese when you are cooking it. Fold it over so that the ingredients are in the middle of the omelet.

5. Egg salad sandwiches can make for a great lunch. You can add flavor when you are mashing the egg by adding some lemon, onion and celery pieces. You can also replace the mayonnaise with a salad dressing such as ranch or dill. Other ingredients can include: pieces of bacon or ham, and red and green pepper. Make sure your eggs are completely boiled so you don?t have any runny yolks.

6. You can make your children?s plate more creative by using eggs. Fry two eggs. Make toast and fry some bacon. Place the food in the form of a happy face. Use the eggs as eyes. Cut the toast in angles and position the pieces as eyebrows and a nose. Use the bacon strips for the mouth.

7. Bake a potato and cut it in half. Remove a small amount of the centre of each half. Mash up a boiled egg and mix in celery, chives, and some spices. Scoop it into the centre of each potato half. Cover each potato half with cheddar cheese. Have a cheese burger with the meal.

8. Open up a pita so that it is a pita pocket. Mix egg and cook as scrambled eggs. Put the scrambled egg in a bowl and add onion, tomatoes, green pepper, and cooked chicken pieces. Mix them all together with feta cheese and a bit of olive oil. Put the mixture in the pita and you have a pita pocket sandwich.

It is very easy to be creative with eggs. Because children love eggs, they will be surprised and pleased with the imaginative meals you prepare for them using this delicious and wholesome food.

Weight Loss Tips That Work

October 6th, 2009
by Heather Trapisano

When you’re ready to lose weight shoot for the first 10 pounds. Our fist focus is to pay attention to the amount of food you’re eating. Eliminate those unnecessary sugar and fatty foods from your meals while making delicious meals and snacks that keep your palate happy.

Use this not difficult and super healthy diet plan to lose the first 10, the last 10, or any amount of pounds in between! Because this is a balanced and flexible program, you can stay on this diet as long as it takes.

Most weight loss programs insist you keep track of every bit of food you eat or drink. Start by writing down everything you eat. No need to write down the calorie count but start not putting margarine or butter on toast, vegetables and sandwiches. Use less oil in food as well as cooking.

Use skim milk and make a habit to drink tea. If you insist on using whole milk at least use two percent milk in your diet. This helps cutting down on your fat intake.

Be certain to include legumes, peanut, cottage cheese, chicken, fish, eggs or yogurt. Try to cut back on your sugar treats to a few times a week max. Eat one or more meatless lunches and dinners each week.

Pay attention to the fresh fruit you eat. Try for 2 servings of fresh fruit a day by eating what is in season. Drink water instead of sugary fruit juice. Add lemon for some zip. Eat vegetables with lunch and dinner.

Choose one to two servings of foods made from whole grains with every meal. Shut off the TV whenever you eat meals and snacks. Studies show that we automatically eat larger portions when we snack in front of the tube, and typically those foods are high in fat and sugar, which means excess calories!

Chew your calories. Don’t consume liquids teeming with calories by drinking them. That means cutting out soda and high-calorie fruit juices and drinking tea or water instead. Plan ahead what you are going to eat. Last-minute planning tends to veer you off your diet.

Sore Joints – What Could Be The Reason For Sore Joints?

October 5th, 2009
by Mitchell Tyrell

Many factors affect the health of joints. The main cause of sore joints, osteoarthritis, occurs with age and therefore affects almost everyone. In younger people, sore joints are caused by overuse. Several illnesses also have an affect on joint health.

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Most people over the age of 70 are afflicted with severity ranging from mild to severe. However, after the age of 55, the illness affects more women than men. Osteoarthritis is the erosion of the cushion between the bones. The cushion is a layer of cartilage – the same tissue that makes up the bridge of your nose. Age and normal use causes some of the wear. However, with osteoarthritis the cartilage completely disappears, which leaves the exposed bones to rub against each other. Painful outgrowths of bone, called spurs, can also occur.

Tendons, ligament and bones can all be affected by overuse. Tendons connect muscle to bone. Repetitive motion can cause tendons to swell and the joints to become sore. This phenomenon is called tendonitis. One of the most common forms of tendonitis is carpal tunnel syndrome. Ligaments connect bone to bone within a joint.

Overuse is a common problem among younger people. Tendonitis is usually caused by repetitive motion activities. A common form of tendonitis is called carpal tunnel syndrome which affects the wrists and forearms. Ligaments are the fibrous tissue that holds bones together. Ligaments can be damaged in two ways. A strain occurs when the ligament is stretched too far or used too much. Tiny tears occur in the fibers of the ligament which cause the tissue to swell. Sprains are the result of the joint being bent in an unnatural direction.

Osteoarthritis is not the only illness that affects joint health. An autoimmune disease called rheumatoid arthritis causes swelling in the joints for unknown causes. A bacterial infection can cause septic arthritis. Many other forms of arthritis also exist.

Aerobic Fitness And Chiropractic

October 4th, 2009
by Dr. Jason Fowler

When we think of chiropractic treatment we think mostly of chiropractic treatment in terms of lower back pain, neck pain, and headaches. In fact, there are numerous additional wide-ranging benefits to chiropractic health care. Many of these benefits are related to getting more out of our exercise activities.

For example, aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular function.1,2 As a result, during periods of rest the heart rate is slowed and the ability of the lungs to take in air (vital capacity) is increased. A slower heart rate means the heart is working more efficiently. Increased vital capacity means the lungs are working more efficiently. Fewer heart beats per minute and fewer breaths per minute result in reduced “wear and tear” on these critical systems. Aerobic exercise makes us healthier.

When we have stress, our muscles get tight. Sometimes this tightness is prolonged, and the normal mobility of our bones and joints is compromised. Reduced mobility of the spinal column creates a spiraling effect of tight muscles, tight ligaments, and further loss of mobility in the neck, middle back, and lower back. We experience pain in these areas as a result.3

These patterns may persist. We all know people who have frequent neck pain or lower back pain. These patterns of pain and limited mobility may result in changes to the normal curves of the spine. Normal curves may become flattened. These changes result in further discomfort, muscular tension, and pain.

Importantly, loss of the normal spinal curvature in the neck and middle back may place additional stress on the heart and lungs. The actual physical space in which these organs function may become reduced. Maximum function may be compromised and efficiency is lost. Brisk walking used to be easy. Climbing stairs used to be no problem. Now these normal daily activities may leave you out-of-breath. You’re huffing-and-puffing and don’t know what’s happened.

You begin doing aerobic exercises to try to improve cardiovascular function. But the potential benefits are limited by these underlying muscle, ligament, and joint problems. You spend a lot of time exercising but don’t seem to be making any improvements.

Chiropractic health care may be able to restore more normal functioning. Chiropractic treatment restores mobility to spinal joints. The gentle treatment relieves stress on the spinal muscles and ligaments, which in turn improves spinal range of motion. Muscle tightness eases, pain and stiffness are reduced, and you become more flexible.

In addition, this improved flexibility allows your chest and rib cage to expand much more fully when you breathe. Your heart and lungs have more room to function. You can now actually begin to receive the full benefits of your aerobic exercise.

Chiropractic care can help you get fit and stay fit!
