Types of Kick Drum Samples

There are many different types of kick drum samples available for music producers today. Beat making is such an involved activity that having to use the same samples over and over can really kill your creativity. This is especially true with kick drum sounds as these are an elemental ingredient to just about every rhythm and blues, hip hop, rap, pop and rock song on the charts and underground today.

There are a few different sound stages (or phases) in every sample, including the ever-present kick drum. The first, and at the starting line, is called the attack. This first phase really determines the ’shine’ factor of the kick, and whether it can be heard with a whole bunch of other sounds competing for attention. A slow attack (which means a weak starting point) will need to be compensated for by the other phases of the drum sample.

The sustained kick, which pertains to the second phase of the audio sample, is the sound that stays with you the longest, much more memorable than the initial attack. If you have a great attack, you can afford to have a weak mid-sound (or sustained sound), because we have heard that the kick is there, but it can’t be both at the same time; if the attack is weak and there is no sustained sound, you don’t have a kick, you have a melon.

If you want to adjust your kick’s volume in proportion to the other drum samples, there are hundreds of ways available to you. Your main sequencer program probably has a few different places with volume controls, and even if it doesn’t you can just as easily download a free plugin or program to help you achieve this goal. Most drum machines and software on Macs and PCs offers easy volume manipulation on both the main mixers and the additional nested devices, so check them out and read your manual.

If you still don’t want to use an envelope to modify the volume, it’s very easy to do it with an audio editor. Just select the part of the drum sample wave that fades out or stops (the end of it) and trim to your liking. To blend everything in after a crop, use a fade on the last few milliseconds to ensure that the drum samples are free of clipping.

You should also know that depending on what program you end up purchasing, different drum samples come with different programs. The drums in Propellerheads’ Reason, for example, are different than those contained in Battery 3. You can mix and match, but what’s important is that the samples are really the best for you; you should make a folder of your go-to drum samples to use time and time again.

The Ideal Age for Taking Piano Lessons

Because of the many benefits of learning the piano, most parents want their children to take piano lessons. The question many parents have is: At what age should I enroll my child in a piano class?

Because children’s brains are developing at a young age, learning while young helps a child retain knowledge throughout their adult life. Most experts agree that a child should begin piano lessons when they are quite young. Some children have taken lessons as young as four years of age. Whether your child is ready for piano lessons all depends on if they have the ability to participate.

The following are a few factors that a parent should consider when planning to enroll their child in a piano class:

1. You have to make sure your child can meet the mental requirements to sit through a piano lesson. Piano lessons can be 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or one hour, depending on the teacher’s instructional methods. Can your child sit through a piano lesson or will he or she fidget and get up and walk away from the piano? Your child must be able to sit quietly. 3. When learning to play the piano, one must be able to understand and follow directions given by the teacher. Does your child have good listening skills and follow directions when given a set of instructions?

4. Does your child show any interest in learning the piano? A child that is resistant may not be ready. Don’t force your child as it will only cause him or her to resent the lessons. Help your child understand the benefits of taking lessons and that it is fun.

Enrolling your child in a piano class will involve practice at home. Most experts feel that a child will not successfully practice by themselves at home until they are the age of 8 or 9. This means that a parent will have to site with them during their practice with their child. It is important to use positive reinforcement techniques, such as praising the child when he or she does well. If they make a mistake, be positive about the importance of practice. Never harshly criticize a child for making a mistake. The child will just start to resent playing the piano and will eventually want to quit. The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Review

I think because of the massive amount of attention that is given to this album’s so called “historical significance” that sometimes not enough attention is given to the music itself. I hope to correct that imbalance with this review which focuses entirely on the album’s 13 tracks.

01. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” – This is a brilliant way to start the album and it really sets the mood for the entire thing. The “concept” of the album is really quite loose, without this song there is no concept album! One thing I really dig about this song is the crazy horns section. Can you imagine many “rock bands” of today having the imagination to include something like that in their song?

02. “With a Little Help from my Friends” – I know there are quite a few people who think that Joe Cocker really did the definitive version of this song, but I’m definitely not one of those people. I like Cocker’s version, but the original contains the real magic to my ears.

03. “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” – Now that the original mono version is available easily (with the release of The Beatles in Mono Box Set) it’s great to be able to hear what this album sounds like in mono (how it was “meant to be heard” originally.) And the heavy vocal effects on this song is probably one of the more interesting things about the mono mixes for me.

04. “Getting Better” – This song so perfectly encapsulates the sound of this album and what it’s all about to me.

05. “Fixing a Hole” – I love this kind of more subtle psychedelia. And yes, this is a very psychedelic song. And how about those lyrics? Anyone who doesn’t think McCartney could write lyrics should pay close attention to these.

06. “She’s Leaving Home” – This song is very interesting to hear in mono because it’s actually sped up (and thus pitched up) in the mono mix. It has a lot more energy that way. Definitely worth a listen!

07. “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” – I think my favorite part of this song is the cut up tape section where it sounds like sort of insane random carnival music.

08. “Within You Without You” – Speaking of “far out” how about we go all the way to India? Some people don’t like this song because it doesn’t fit with their preconceived notions of what music is supposed to sound like. To me this song is brilliant because of that very reason. We shouldn’t limit ourselves.

09. “When I’m 64″ – Check out this song sequencing. We went from a 1800s circus to India to do some meditating and now we’re enjoying ourselves this very tongue in cheek music hall number. So many differnet styles of music are explored on this album, and they are all done brilliantly.

11. “Lovely Rita” – I have to admit that tracks #10 and #11 are probably my least favorites on the album. But considering I quite like both of those tracks, that says a lot about how much I love this album.

11. “Good Morning Good Morning” – My least favorite song on the album. Yet I still think it’s pretty great at times and it has some very interesting elements. I think that says a lot about how much I love this album.

12. “Sgt. Pepper’s (Reprise)” – This one is even better than the album opener. It rocks something fierce!

13. “A Day in the Life” – The greatest song ever.

In order to hear Sgt. Pepper’s in mono you must buy The Beatles In Mono. It’s highly recommend that you buy both Beatles Remastered Box Sets.

Advanced Guitar Theory- The Relative Minors

This short article presents a woolly description as well as a more technical one to make you familiar with Relative Minors.

A relative minor is a musical scale that is “related” to a major scale. As they work together harmonically, thus they can be regarded as being in the same family. Relative minors provide a remarkable mode to move from a major to a minor key without too much of a jump or use of multiplex chord sequences and so they are considered as a well-set tool in songwriting.

Here is a more technical description:

The relative minor of a certain major scale is a scale that starts 6 intervals up and after that shares all of the same notes. Firstly, what is an interval? It is not easy to answer it precisely but you can say that an interval is a note in a scale. You can understand all this with the help of an example. Let’s look at the scale of C ??” it is liked by most of the people because it has no sharps or flats. It consists of followingnotes

C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

We find that A is the relative minor of C by moving up 6 notes, (C-D-E-F-G-A). Therefore the possible notes we will use for A minor are A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A.

Although we start on the note of A, all of the notes also exist in the C major scale.

Taking it a step further, looking at the scale in terms of half and whole notes, as in the Major Scale 101 lesson, for a relative minor we would use the formula:

2 1 2 2 1 2 2

You can practice this formula to figure out the relative minor scale for any major scale by starting at the 6th note and applying it.

Now, to conclude, a short note of a couple of fascinating facts about Relative Minors is given. Firstly, three various minor scales are there in western music ??” with a slight divergence in their formula. The scale above is in reality a “Natural Minor” or “Pure Minor” scale – two names for the same thing while the other two are called “Harmonic” and “Melodic”. As their formulas differ from each other, so they do not share the same notes as the associated relative major scale and are harmonically speaking not such a right match as the Natural Minor.

And eventually, the Natural Minor (or Relative Minor) scale of a certain major scale is also known as the “Aeolian Mode”. Modes are a concept that we will discuss later, but for now, you can say confidently that you have correct understanding of Relative Minors, Pure Minors, Natural Minors, and the Aeolian mode.

Build Patterns for Lead Guitar Improvisation

A couple of strategies are there to build various patterns:

1. Start on the E string on any note of the musical scale. Keep this fret in your mind . Move up that string playing notes from the scale until the next note would be more than 4 frets from home position (count the home position as fret 1), and place that next note on a higher string. Continue it until you go out of strings.

With this approach you can get standard scale boxes – boxes are great because they help you to hold your hand in the same position throughout the scale.

2. Start Up on the E string on any note of the scale. For every string, add notes until you have played precisely 3 notes on that string and after that modify strings.

You can develop 3 notes per string scales with the help of this approach – this is great because they have an even number of notes on each string which actually helps with speed runs.

You can get 2 note per string scales by altering the number from 3 to 2 or 4, or even 4 notes per string scales (possible, but really difficult to play, a favorite of Alan Holdsworth I believe). 2 notes per string are especially suitable for pentatonic.

3. Whole neck approach – in this approach we play entire number of scales by moving up 1 string and handle every string in isolation. Understand that there will be great overlap between strings, and figure out all the practicable means of playing an individual note or run on all strings (very challenging to do in practice but this is how actually top notch performers find out things)

That’s all what the patterns actually are – and as far as a point of terminology is concerned, I would call boxes a special case of patterns that are constructed by applying rule 1, patterns is a more general term that refers to all possible ways to map a scale to the guitar neck.
