Freelance writing is a way to earn money by working for yourself and submitting your written work to the best publisher. In other words – freelance is self-employed.

It doesn’t matter where you look there is something that has words printed on it. We live in an information society. Yet, even though we rely so heavily on the written word even with advances in technology, we still need people to provide that written content. What’s really amazing is that as important as the written word is to most companies, they rarely have a large full time staff to do their writing. These companies often rely on people who will do the writing for them on a freelance basis.

Even if you have never really heard of freelance writing, chances are you probably have heard about people who do ghost writing. The best example of this type of writing is the people who write for celebrities and create their autobiographies for them. While it is quite prestigious for the ghost writer and they are rewarded well financially, there is usually hardly any mention of them as being the actual writer of the book.

Non fiction is a large field, too, but getting into that takes a little more effort and a lot of luck. It is very difficult to present existing knowledge in a new and refreshing way and almost impossible, as an unknown quantity, to get a new non fiction book published.

Far and away the easiest freelance writing field to break into is that of local publications like newspapers and magazines. It is the content of these two vehicles that drive the popularity so editors are always on the look-out for new authors to present their readers with different content. We should also include here the huge numbers of people who own web sites. They too are constantly seeking to improve the standings of their web sites by introducing new, relevant and valuable information.

This can be an easier market to break into because it tends to be easier to discover who to talk to and what to write about and there aren’t many freelance writers for them who write more than 500 – 600 word articles. The publications are looking for content, not new pages.

You should now understand that freelance writing is something which allows you to get paid for your writing skills in a multitude of ways if you’re willing to work for it.

What Are the Steps You Need to Follow to Become a Freelance Writer?

Once the earning potential of freelance writers becomes apparent, many people will ask themselves “How do I become a freelance writer?” The process can be as hard or as easy as you want to make it. Like any process, you have to have a reasonable idea of what the final product is and the ingredients or steps along the way to achieving it. If you give some thought to how many different types of writers there are, you will see that you have discovered the first step along the way to becoming one.

This is by far one of the most important steps that you can take to become a freelance writer. If you’re not honest with yourself during this step you probably won’t be able to reach your goal, or will waste a lot of unnecessary time getting there.

There are many types of writing that can be done here are some ideas: News reporting, poetry, stories (fiction and non-fiction), reviews, advertising copy, articles, etc. You have to decide what type of writing you enjoy doing the most and then compare your writing to works that have already been published in the same style.

Many freelance writers often maintain their own blogs to showcase what kind of writing they are capable of doing; do you have a blog already? Some people belong to writing clubs to help sharpen their writing skills and get constructive criticism, if you do belong to such a group how is your work generally received?

Whatever type of writing you want to do, it will always help if you have a significant amount of experience already doing that sort of writing. For example, if you’ve never written a poem before, you probably shouldn’t try to become a freelance poet. Not only should you have already written extensively in the field you want to become a freelancer for, but you should have also received some sort of objective feedback on it, so you know whether you’re good at it or not.

If you already have many pieces and have received favorable feedback, you should then put your best work together in a portfolio so you can present it to get work. The problem isn’t finding people who are looking for freelance writers, because thanks to the internet this has become quite simple, the problem is getting people to actually read your samples.

There is no excuse for you not to get the proper name and email address of the right person to send your portfolio to. The message is very important, be sure that you give an introduction to yourself and your work, but keep it brief; remember being polite is the best thing to do and make sure they understand you would like them to consider you to be a freelance writer and be a regular contributor for them.

If your work is to a reasonable standard and relevant to the content that is usually included in the publication, you will be considered and probably invited for an interview and, possibly, a trial period. Although you will only be paid for your work that is published, a trial period will not only confirm your position, if successful, but will also confirm that you have made the right choice.

How to Write An Effective Cover Letter

The importance of targeting your resume to a specific employer cannot be overstated. In addition there is another tool in your armory that you can use to ‘hook in’ the recipient of your resume – the cover letter. It must also be targeted at a specific employer.

The cover letter will be read first by the potential employer so it must waste no time in catching their attention and then encourage them to take further action in opening your attached resume. If the cover letter is not effective then your carefully prepared resume may never be opened and read by the target reader. In effect, the cover letter is an instance of a sales letter designed to sell you and your resume to the reader.

There are three main types of cover letter -the broadcast letter, the letter of inquiry and the job application cover letter. Keep any cover letter to a single page. Check the spelling and formatting carefully. Remember that it is the first view of you that the reader will get. Don’t be afraid to personalise your writing style within reason. A stream of consciousness ramble will not go down well! Now we’ll examine each type of letter in turn.

Broadcast Letter

A broadcast letter should accompany any resume sent to a recruitment agency or job board. The first sentence should explain why you are writing. In this particular instance, the letter cannot be targeted at a specific reader as the letter will be broadcast to a wider audience that cannot be predicted. Instead you must target the broadcast letter to a specific role or industry sector. It is important to include your key skills and to highlight your strengths and experience relevant to the role or sector.

Letter of Enquiry

A letter of enquiry should be attached to any resume sent as a speculative enquiry to an employer. The first sentence should focus on why you are writing. It should go on to highlight your strengths and focus on your key skills and achievements. Keep in focus the employment sector you are aiming at and list those skills and achievements most relevant to that sector. Write simply and clearly using no technical language that could confuse a non-technical reader.

Job Application Cover Letter

A cover letter should be included with a resume sent as a job application to an employer. It’s important to include the company name in the address heading. The first sentence should contain the job title and the reference of the role you are applying for. It should go on to highlight your strengths and focus on your skills and achievements relevant to the role applied for. Do not make any mention of your desired salary or of any other company benefits. Your goal is to present to the employer what it is you can do for them – not what they can do for you. Bear in mind that non-technical HR staff may process job applications so remember to explain your skills and experience in layman’s terms.

In summary, make your cover letters short, simple and to the point. Sell yourself to the employer. Highlight your suitability for the post. If you can catch the reader’s interest then your resume will be read in a more positive light. Some people though choose to simply put down references are available upon request, the choice is up to you but I do not see how it can hurt you by putting some down.

Most writers, and most workers in general, understand the normal “paid once for work done” model. For example, maybe you ghost write an article and get paid $10, or you write one article for an online writing website and get $5 up front. This is the one time payment, and the type of payment that most freelance writers are used to. This is also how most people are paid in the real world.

There is a second form of payment for writing, one that is particularly available to freelance writers who work online. This would be passive or residual income. Income that is made from work that has already been done and completed in the past.

Residual income is the second option that a writer has. Unlike pay per job, residual income is when an article or some other bit of writing you’ve already done and finished. You won’t get as much money up front, but as opposed to one $10 payment for a single article, that article might make you $2 a month, every month, from now until the Internet no longer exists. Building a passive income is a major goal of many freelance writers because it grants a level of freedom that they won’t otherwise have with a more traditional freelance writing business.
