Picking A Blood Pressure Monitor

October 6th, 2009
by Jack Douglas

Knowing and monitoring your blood pressure can mean the difference between life and death and that is something you should take literally. Heart disease and heart attacks are on the rise and many Americans now understand just how important it is to know your blood pressure and are taking advantage of the blood pressure cuffs at many stores.

While a blood pressure cuff alone isn’t the answer, using one in conjunction with healthy lifestyle habits can increase your life expectancy. Checking your blood pressure is the best way to discover if you are suffering from hypertension. The normal range for your blood pressure should be under 120/80 Once you exceed that, you are in the “at risk” stage, and anything over 140 is considered high blood pressure.

A visit to your doctor is necessary if you find your blood pressure in the risky range for a check- up. On your visit you most likely will be given a stress test to check how your heart function is and your doctor will instruct you on what changes to make for your health.

After visiting your doctor you will be advised on what is healthy or safe for you and almost always it starts with two simple things, changing your diet and exercising.

Your doctor may want you to monitor your blood pressure and heart rate at home, in which case you will need to find a monitor that is easy to use. Your doctor will be able to give you advise on how to find one that will provide you with accurate results.

There are two types of monitors, the digital and aneroid blood pressure monitors and your choice will be easier once you understand the difference between the two and you can choose between the two to make a wise decision which is practical for you.

The first monitor is very inexpensive and user-friendly and is called the aneroid monitor. A word of caution is that they are extremely sensitive and are damaged and broken easily, plus you need a stethoscope connected to a cuff.

The digital blood pressure monitor is roughly the same size as a cell phone and some of them come connected with an arm cuff. The cuff will measure the blood pressure and that is what is displayed on the monitor. There are even some models with which you can print out the results or they have memory and let you store the last readings.

When the time comes to make a choice you have to decide if you want the digital monitor that is more expensive but easier to use or the less expensive aneroid that breaks easier but can be replaced inexpensively.

There are two other types which may be convenient but are not very reliable thus could be dangerous for your health. They are the finger monitor or wrist monitor, though easy to use, not reliable.

Once you have started to monitor your own blood pressure, you will also have to keep a chart of the results. This will help your doctor to properly evaluate your blood pressure readings. In order to ensure accuracy of the readings taken at home, you should avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine, as well as avoid smoking. That is because all of those substances will create an artificial elevation of your blood pressure.

Make sure you are also in a relaxed position to get the best reading. Even mild stress can elevate your reading.

If you have been diagnosed with hypertension, keeping a blood pressure monitor handy can help you find ways to get an accurate reading to benefit your health.

The Truth About Core Training Unmasked by Washington, DC Personal Trainer

October 5th, 2009
by Josef Brandenburg

Many people have taken up the fitness regiment of Pilates either at their local gym, their local Pilates studio, or the comfort and privacy of their own homes. Pilates is centered around your core muscles which consist the abdominals and the surrounding muscles. These muscles have been a target of working out for centuries with simple sit-ups and crunches and any other variation of the two exercises. The ever wanted six-pack abs or washboard stomach is the reason working out your core is so popular. Since the release of the hit Hollywood movie “300″, a six-pack has become the must have fashion accessory on the beach or underneath your favorite shirt.

Most people don’t realize that core training by sit-ups and crunches alone does not normally give you the results that you desire. Those that work solely on their core or abs rarely see any kind of results at all. Many Washington D.C. personal trainers and other physical coaches know this little tidbit of information, but fail to mention it to their clients in order to keep them working on the unattainable, thus their clients keep coming to them for help and putting money in their pockets.

Why you can’t get a Flat Stomach with Crunches

Let’s forget about the six-pack for a moment because, as we mentioned, most people will never have one. It takes years of training, a perfect diet as well as (and this is the thing they never tell you) great genes. Why don’t we simply concentrate on getting that fat stomach flat?

The stomach, as you are likely aware, is a problem area for most people. It seems to collect fat more quickly, especially in men. We all know about beer bellies and how they make men look like, well, their fathers. It is no wonder that most men are desperate to shed some pounds from this definitive area, and more often than not they turn to core training to help them do it. But to be blunt, core exercises are an incredible waste of time.

Everyone has abdominal muscles but you can’t always see them because they are located under a layer of fat. Getting rid of the fat layer that is on top of your core is really the only way to get a flat stomach or the mystical six-pack. Simply working these muscles with core training, though making your muscles a little stronger, will not get rid of this layer enough to be seen by the naked eye.

We are talking of course about targeted weight loss here, which is one of the biggest myths in the exercise industry. There is no such thing as targeted weight loss. There is no such thing as working out one specific area of the body and losing weight just from that area. The body doesn’t work like that. When you lose weight, you lose weight from everywhere.

There are many workouts that can help you to achieve the weight loss that you desire. Anything in the cardiovascular family will certainly do this for you. Running, walking, swimming, using an elliptical, or jumping rope are all effective, popular and proven ways to keep your heart rate up and help you burn the calories needed to lose weight. Core training alone does not provide the calorie burning needed to achieve weight loss.

Core training can actually be quite dangerous, especially if you are tired. If not done correctly and with perfect form, core training can cause damage to your neck and spine and injury is even more likely when our form isn’t exactly right. Those suffering from back and/or neck problems should not participate in core training because of the risk of further injury.

The best away to achieve a flat, healthy stomach is to do all around exercising and not concentrate solely on the core section. Cardio is an excellent way to burn calories and help get rid of the extra fat you may be carrying around in that area. So stop wasting your time chasing after the unattainable and work on being a healthier person.

The chair back of the DR7700K is comfortable and the upholstery is well padded. The head pillow is soft and the thickness is appropriate. The seat is ok and the armrests have sufficient padding. The footrest is comfortable, but cannot be adjusted. If you are 5′ 10″ or more, then your knees must be bent when the footrest is raised. The manual massage techniques include the following: Shiatsu, Kneading, Tapping, and Kneading & Tapping. Additionally, because of the GK roller system, Sanyo offers Grip, which is a squeezing sensation. Sanyo incorporates various stretches. The DR7700K massage chair uses 24 airbags with projections that perform a shiatsu massage on the calves and an undulating sole shiatsu massage. There are a wide range of massage capabilities and the GK rollers add a critical third dimension. Our rating in this category is 19.

How does the Sanyo HEC-DR7700K stack up? Overall, our rating of the Panasonic is an 85/100. Sanyo brings some cutting edge technology with their GK Rollers and Zero Gravity into its massage chairs. The design is fairly modern leaning toward minimalist. The controls are fairly well designed and easy to use. Main drawback is the weaker warranty coverage and added expense for an extended warranty as well as the footrest not being adjustable. Otherwise, the Sanyo HEC-DR7700K has solid technology and is fairly effective in delivering relief. Hopefully, Sanyo will design more for the American market and include more ergonomic chairs in the future, but for now the HEC-DR7700K is a solid choice.

Fish Oil Purity. The Number 1 Concern Of Omega 3 Supplements

September 5th, 2009

The evidence for the health benefits of fish oil is overwhelming and you really ought to be taking Omega 3 supplements if you’re not already. But today I want to consider fish oil purity issues.

Purity? Does purity have anything to do with Omega 3 capsules? Yes. You see fish is contaminated with toxins like PCBs, mercury and dioxine. And the FDA tell us not to eat too much fish for this reason.

And if manufacturers use fish oil for their supplements, as they do, then there’s a risk of contamination of our capsules. Some have been withdrawn in the past for issues of Omega 3 purity, or lack of it.

And so the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) was set up to specify maximum levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, PCBs and dioxine in fish oil.

This sounds wonderful, except all of this is voluntary and companies that make Omega 3 supplements don’t need to comply, and can sell fish oil capsules that don’t comply.

There are now at least 4 different sets of standards for fish oil purity, none binding.

This confuses the issue. What standard does a manufacturer comply with, if any? One company that makes Omega 3 capsules has decided that it’s all too hard, and the standards are too lax anyway, and set it’s own standards.

And it’s standards are stricter than all 4 of the current International standards. On mercury, or example, it’s standard is 10 times lower (ie 10 times stricter) than that of the International Fish Oil Standards.

It’s the same with it’s other standards for such things as lead and arsenic, they too are 10 times or more lower than the International standards.

But what’s the point if you set the standards then don’t meet them? And who knows anyway.

This company can see the problem and makes every effort to make their standards, and their own results, totally transparent. They use 2 separate independent labs to test each batch of fish oil they use and then publish the Certificate of Analysis they get on their website so you and I can see it. There’s no detected toxins at all.

So it’s sad to say but it’s true, there are contaminants in fish and so there can also be in your supplements. You really do need to consider issues of fish oil purity.

Do this to make sure your fish oil supplements are improving your health, not damaging it.

Visit my website to find out who makes the Omega 3 supplements with the highest fish oil purity on the market.

What Is The Correct Fish Oil Dosage?

August 27th, 2009
by Peter Bertonich

It’s not quite clear what the right fish oil dosage is, I constantly see questions about how much fish oil should I take.

How much fish oil should you take? What is the recommended dosage of fish oil capsules for someone who has heart disease already? Should they take more fish oil supplements?

Lets have a look at the view of the American Heart Association. They tell us the benefits of Omega 3 fish oil on their website, and they look at what is the correct dosage of fish oil for people with, and without, heart disease.

Lets look at what they recommend.

First though I’d like to consider where the fish oil you take should come from. Now you could just eat fish. But as well as being expensive there are other problems.

The first problem is that fish can have nasty contaminants in it. The FDA tell us to limit how much fish we eat for this reason.

This doesn’t apply to the best fish oil supplements, they go through a rigorous process to ensure that they are free from contaminants. Note that not all fish oil supplements are free from contaminants.

The next problem is how much Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats you get from different types of fish. The level varies from one type of fish to another, and its hard to know what you need to eat to get enough. Generally speaking oily fish such as mackerel, herring, sardines, lake trout, albacore tuna and salmon is better than non oily fish.

Now the AHA tells us to eat 2 fish meals a week, but what if you’re worried about contamination, or fish is too expensive?

And they also say evidence from prospective secondary prevention studies suggests that taking EPA+DHA ranging from 0.5 to 1.8 grams per day (either as fatty fish or supplements) significantly reduces deaths from heart disease and all causes.

So for healthy people we should be taking around half to 1.8 grams of EPA and DHA a day from fish or supplements.

And for people who have heart disease already:

For those with documented Coronary Heart Disease: 1 gram of EPA and DHA a day. (Note that those with known heart health problems should consult a doctor before starting any supplements).

And for those seeking to lower triglycerides: 2 to 4 grams per day. Again, consult your doctor.

So there’s some more specific recommendations. Now lets look at another source.

There was a new study published just recently in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that suggests at least 500 mg (half a gram) per day for healthy people and 800 to 1000 mg for those with known cardio vascular issues.

Now next we need to ask what ratio we should look for between EPA and DHA, the 2 major Omega 3 fats. There is no AHA recommendation, it’s still under study.

So what can we deduce from all that? We can deduce that, firstly, the fish oil dosage for heart disease patients is higher than for people with no known heart disease.

We don’t know what ratio we should aim for between EPA and DHA, but otherwise it’s reasonably clear.

A minimum of a half gram a day of EPA and DHA together for healthy people and about double that for those with known heart issues. More for lowering triglycerides.

The best fish oil supplements money can buy have 280 mg of DHA and 120 mg of EPA in them. (Double the amount of DHA than your “average” capsules). So they have a total of 400 mg.

So 2 capsules a day will give you 800 mg in total, around the level proposed by the AHA. And the recommended dosage, (taken from the label), for adults is 2 capsules a day.

So if you have no known heart issues take the best fish oil supplements at a fish oil dosage of 2 capsules a day. You need to take up to double that for your “average” fish oil supplements, depending on what is in them.

So if you’re wondering how much fish oil should I take we hope this gives you some guidelines. There are no formal exact guidelines, these things are still under study.

We can draw some conclusions from the recommendations of the AHA and others.

And the conclusion, 2 capsules day (of the best fish oil capsules, not all) corresponds with their own recommendations.

Visit my website to find out which are the best Omega 3 supplements giving you around twice as much Omega 3 fats as others.

Are Heart Rate Monitors Accurate?

August 11th, 2009
by Henry Calhoun

There are many people who are concerned about the accuracy of heart rate monitors and are therefore worried that they might not be good to use when exercising. There is in reality nothing to be worried about since a heart rate monitor will use many factors to determine the rate and if it is wrong, it is probably because someone didn’t ensure accuracy. If properly used, the results are almost always very accurate.

The first modern heart rate monitor for personal use was invented in 1977. It was modeled after the EKG and made to be just as accurate. This first monitor was used on a cross country skiing team to help them with their training.

Ever since that first heart rate monitor was used, all monitors made afterwards have aimed for accuracy, since it is an essential feature of any monitoring device. It is easy enough to determine if a heart rate monitor is accurate or not since the pulse rate can also be taken manually, although this is less convenient.

A heart rate monitor can simplify the process of monitoring a heart rate and making sure that a person is working out to their full potential and not overdoing it during a training session. This device saves you time and is meant to make things easier, but if it is not accurate then there is no point to it.

Heart rate monitors are now one of the top selling fitness devices, and because of that you have to come to the conclusion that there is something good about them. If these devices were as inaccurate as many assume, then it would be a well known fact by now and people would have stopped purchasing them. There have been, however, some reports of inaccuracy and these have resulted in improvements being made and more advanced models of heart rate monitors being developed and sold.

One of the issues with earlier models was that electromagnetic waves from electronic equipment could interfere with the heart rate monitor and cause inaccurate readings. Most newer models have a feature which blocks such interference.

Another common issue is user error. If you are not using the monitor correctly or not putting it on right then you could end up with inaccurate results. It is important to read all literature that comes with the monitor so you understand how to properly use it.

You should also watch what type of monitor you buy. Typically the chest band models will give you the most accurate results. There are a range of styles on the market and you might find that one works better for you than others. You might consider trying out monitors at a local gym or asking if there is a display model in the store that you can try out before buying so you can find the most accurate model for you. After all accuracy is very important when it comes to heart rate monitors. With the many options on the market you can easily find an accurate heart rate monitor that will offer you many benefits.

Fitness Over 40: Massage Chairs Can Calm You

August 10th, 2009
by Joshua Stanich

Fitness in your 40s and beyond is not impossible. What you are really fighting is a slowing metabolism. As we age our metabolism begins to slow down. This is especially true for women where their metabolic rate tends to start declining in their 30s. Focus in on 3 main areas to get fit when your over 40. The trilogy of fitness is diet, no surprise there! Exercise–I don’t know why that never goes away, but wait there is hope with massage chair therapy.

When the metabolic rate begins to drop, you will feel like you have less energy. Women can struggle with this in particular. However, it does not need to remain the same. You have to motivate and then your have to work, and not lollygag around. The main problem is simply giving up, like a new years resolution. Women face more pressure then men to maintain a nice figure.

You know if you are fit at 40, that it took determination. It took discipline. You may have watched what you ate to prolong the mid life tire. Diet is the first area to help you not eat the wrong foods. Consistency and balance in your diet is important. Stick to natural foods and avoid processed foods.

Fitness over 40 is achieved by eating several small meals a day that consistent of fruits and vegetables and protein. Protein should come in the form of nuts, lean meats, fish, and so on. You should stay away from saturated fats if at all possible.

How about going for a walk? Walk around the block for 30 minutes. Take the dog and the kids. It can be a good time and healthy for everyone. Try to do this type of light exercise 4 to 5 times per week.

Get plenty of exercise. You dont need to become a work out maniac. Just light aerobics done 3 to 5 times a week can work wonders. The exercise, once you get a good start on it, will help to keep you feeling well and supply you with more much needed energy. Finding an exercise that you love is the first thing that you need to do. Once you have that accomplished, you can devise a plan of action that you are likely to stick with.

Massage therapy is the missing link between diet and exercise. The muscles get worked out but then need to undergo a healing process as they rebuild. Massage therapy helps to keep the muscles resilient while reducing excess toxin build ups. With exercise comes a burning of energy and that waste needs to get flushed out.

The glue to the triad is massage chair therapy. Massage chairs add the convenience of availability. In other words, they are easy to add to your routine. Just take a quick 10 minute recuperation break and feel your vitality improve.

Massage chairs have a variety of treatments in addition to massage therapy. You can find heating elements, stretching systems and even music players. You can apply heat to specific areas of your body to reduce swelling and increase blood flow. Increase your range of motion with a lower body stretch. Or run these in combination as you relax to soothing music.

Does fitness over 40 need to be all bad? Of course not! It is all about balance. Start a routine where it just isn’t all no pain, no gain. Massage chairs therapy is a great way to recover and bring out the best. Yes, you have to work harder, but why not also work hard on recovery.
