Tips For Preventative Carpet Cleaning Solutions

September 28th, 2009
by Edwin Carey

Its vital to clean your household carpets, for keeping up the appearances. Even more importantly, its vital to clean your carpets for general hygiene. Carpets are a warm humid hotbed for household dust mites. The excrement of this mite is one of the most widespread allergen triggers for allergies, asthma, and eczema. These mites thrive in the carpets of even the most immaculately clean homes. Children continually exposed to dust mite allergens over extended periods, may develop asthma later on. Carpet is also home to pet hair, mold spores, and pollen.

The art of keeping your carpets clean is to commit to a regular cleaning schedule. You might even want to hang up a carpet cleaning roster in your kitchen cupboard for example, so that you are regularly reminded to take out the vacuum or to clean the carpets. Spot cleaning is a different story, of course, because most homeowners will deal with a glass of spilling juice or wine on the carpet right away, for fear that the stain will be permanent.

Next, you want to go out and buy new slippers for the whole family. Shoes track in dirt that is hard to remove from you carpet fibres. Take some sandpaper and rub the bottom of your shoes, just to see for yourself what kind of dirt youre tracking in. Going barefoot is not much better because the oil from the bottom of your feet also dirties any carpets.

If youre planning to use a carpet shampoo on your carpets, research your product first. Shop for an ecological, environmentally-friendly product. Make sure it contains anti-resoiling additive, else you will find that you manage to get some of the dirt out but you leave in a sticky residue from the shampoo which attracts new dirt, like a magnet. You also want to be attentive to the drying time, stain removal and optical brighteners.

Preventative cleaning solutions will extend the lifespan of your carpets, and keep them looking new longer. The advantage of opting for a DIY cleaning solution, is that you know what you’re putting on your carpet. Only opt for a professional clean provided you know what chemicals are being poured into your carpet. You want to improve appearances, but also remove pollutants, and this means using ecologically friendly, toxic-free cleaning solutions, that will not be harmful to the environment or to your own health.

by Moses Wright

Cleaning an Area Rug

August 17th, 2009
by Jennifer Smith

If you are on the search for area rug cleaning, what you are really looking for is general carpet or rug cleaning because any rug or carpet, of any size and material, is cleaned in similar ways.

Should you pay someone to clean your area rug for you? If you have a big rug (which isn’t the case with area rugs) then, yes, they may save you a lot of time. But if you have a relatively small area to clean, you can get the same results as they achieve with their professional equipment.

The first thing you should do, before getting the stains off of your carpet, is vacuuming. After that, apply a spot treatment to the stains. If you are not satisfied with the results, you’re going to have to get more intense.

If you browse online websites or your local home improvement shops for carpet or rug cleaners you’re eventually going to stumble upon devices, which look like vacuum cleaners but are actually hot water extractors, which wash out stains. Although manufacturers say that they are steam cleaners, they are anything but, because they use no steam. Regardless, they are still very effective in cleaning your area rugs or rugs/carpets in general.

If you want something more powerful than a hot water extractor, which you can buy online, you can rent a more powerful one by going to your local UHAUL, grocery store, or home improvement store. These hot water extractors are also called steam cleaners even though they use not steam whatsoever. Renting one of these will cost around $20 for an hour.

The rentable hot water extractor machines are very similar to those used by a lot of carpet of rug cleaning businesses in your area. As such, you can save a lot of money by renting a hot water extractor. Although a rug cleaning service is the only place where you can get your area rug (or any rug or carpet for that matter) cleaned with real steam, you can get the same, if not better results, by renting a hot water extractor or buying one online or at a store.

Outdoor Carpets: Criteria For Choosing The Most Suitable One

August 10th, 2009
by Zak Stanislawski

Outdoor carpet choices, styles and applications have become almost overwhelming, and the builder or homeowner is faced with a far more difficult choice than at the times when there were only a few options.

There are different types of carpets for all kind of specialized uses and situations, and depending on where outside your house you want to put it, there are more choices.

Still, one of the most important and primary considerations is the amount of dampness that the carpet will be subject to. This will be a primary determinant of the underlying needed quality, and therefore of cost.

The basic material for outdoor carpet production is olefin, which is a derived version of Polypropylene its texture is a little rough compared to other choices but it’s quite resistant, so it’s a decent enough choice for heavy duty use. Its resistance to sunlight is also good, so colors won’t fade on an olefin outdoor carpets.

Depending on the quality, grass type carpet can or cannot be used outside of covered areas. The cheapest outdoor carpet of this kind is pretty thin and will not last long if constantly exposed to rain.

Better quality grass-like outdoor carpeting is somewhat more expensive but can be laid out in fully exposed outdoor areas. It is advisable to select high grade outdoor grass carpet with a marine backing if the zone for installation will be subject to even moderate amounts of dampness.

The other big family of outdoor carpets is based on imitating indoor styles, but adding waterproofing. The materials are mostly synthetic, but plant-based or woolen outdoor carpets also exist. Most have a water-repellent backing and are treated to be highly mold-resistant.

To a certain extent, you can judge outdoor carpets according to similar criteria than for indoor carpet. For instance, look at the density, check the backing, the trimming and finishing, and so on.

Always check the backing of the carpet, as this is the main element that blocks moisture from seeping up the ground and that ensures that the outdoor carpet will have a long life.

Also, shop around to make sure that you compare manufacturers and retailers for the best price to quality ratio, and don’t stop informing yourself about the different kinds and qualities of outdoor carpet.

Outdoor Carpets: Avoid These Pitfalls When Choosing

August 10th, 2009
by Zak Stanislawski

Outdoor carpet choices, styles and applications have become almost overwhelming, and the builder or homeowner is faced with a far more difficult choice than at the times when there were only a few options.

Not only do the materials and manufacturing techniques differ a lot from one carpet to the next, there are also options depending on the location of the carpet installation, whether it is meant for a patio, for a poolside, and so on.

Still, one of the most important and primary considerations is the amount of dampness that the carpet will be subject to. This will be a primary determinant of the underlying needed quality, and therefore of cost.

The majority of outdoor carpet is made from Olefin While not being the best choice for indoor carpets due to the material’s jagged texture, it is a great filament for outdoor carpeting. Olefin is very resistant to stains, moisture, and sunlight. The latter characteristic means that your carpet’s colors won’t fade.

Depending on the quality, grass type carpet can or cannot be used outside of covered areas. The cheapest outdoor carpet of this kind is pretty thin and will not last long if constantly exposed to rain.

On the other hand, thicker and better quality grass style outdoor carpet can be laid down almost anywhere, and is also much more resistant to heavy traffic. Generally speaking, it is a better and more long-lived option.

The next alternative is one of many kinds of plush outdoor carpet. These come in a variety of different materials, some natural but mostly synthetic, and are manufactured to resemble indoor carpeting, with the added benefit of being more resistant, as well as mold- and waterproof to a certain degree.

To a certain extent, you can judge outdoor carpets according to similar criteria than for indoor carpet. For instance, look at the density, check the backing, the trimming and finishing, and so on.

Ask if the carpet is sunlight resistant, and if it has moisture resistant marine backing. These are the most important things to consider when buying outdoor carpet that will be subject to a lot of moisture. You can expect that the price will increase proportionally to density, size, and similar criteria.

Also, shop around to make sure that you compare manufacturers and retailers for the best price to quality ratio, and don’t stop informing yourself about the different kinds and qualities of outdoor carpet.
