A lot of business people are turning to different and new forms of carpet protection in order to make their carpets last longer. To have your carpets looking great for as long as possible, vacuuming on a normal basis is important as well as having a professional company clean around twice a year. Carpet Protectors such as scotchgard will help you in the long run as they will make sure that your carpet does not absorb as much dirt deep within the carpet.

Applications like scotchgard are useful in a lot of ways, the will help your carpets stay cleaner by trapping most of the soil and dirt on top of the carpet and not letting it get into your fibers by keeping it on top. This will make your carpets look brighter for longer. This article goes over the products used as soil and stain retardants.

The type of chemicals that we are discussing act much like armor all wax would to a car, they try and trap the soil and dirt near the top of the carpet in order for it to be much easier to clean off. These products also act as an invisible barrier to liquids and spillage of sticky stuff. If the protecting chemicals are made with fluorochemicals it will behoove you to re-apply new layers of carpet protectors in those areas. Silicone is the other popular form of these chemicals that offer protection to the flooring of carpet and although it is effective, the fluorochemical kind can withstand more treatments and also will leave no residue behind.

Getting Rid Of House Dust Mites

September 29th, 2009
by Dan Winters

House Dust Mite House dust mites are insects that can not be seen with the naked eye but microscopic. They are related to ticks and spiders and live in house dust. House dust mites feed on human skin flakes and can be found in pillows, carpets, mattresses, upholstered furniture, clothes bedcovers, and stuffed toys. They are a major problem and can cause itching, sneezing, watery eyes and wheezing. They are also a common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms. There is no way to completely eliminate dust mites, but there are methods to control them through chemical control.

How to get rid of house dust mites keep bedding clean: as we spend a lot of time in our beds and lose a lot of dead skin while they’re there. The best thing to do is to change bed frequently. Do it once a week and wash the bedding in hot water. Hot water will kill dust mites. If cold water is used, all it does is wash away most of the dust mites, but many dust mites will live through it. It is also a good idea to use dust-proof bedding covers and get rid of feather pillows and wool blankets. Avoid drying clothes in your bedroom but make sure they are dried thoroughly before putting away.

All carpeting should be removed, and be replaced with a vinyl or hardwood flooring. Use a limited of scattered rugs but should be washed a few times in a year and if you have hard-wood floors, mop. Don?t sweep. Clean all major appliances such as, air conditioner, and filters. Vacuum all the upholstered furniture to minimize accumulation of dust. Take down and wash your curtains. Keep kitchen and bathroom clean and free of mold.

Control dust mites with temperature and humidity Lower indoor humidity. Dust mites prefer things to be warm and humid. Strive to keep humidity levels low by using ventilation fans, air conditioning and dehumidifiers. It is impossible to get rid of all the dust mites but there are some sprays you can use to use to minimize the number of dust mites.

Look for Steri-Fab or BedLam Insecticide. Both are safe for use indoors and can be sprayed directly on beds and upholstery for killing dust mites.

Carpet Cleaning Procedure and Standard

September 16th, 2009

Many carpet cleaners do start cleaning, without actually understanding, the meaning of carpet cleaning. There are various things that have to be taken into consideration, before you start cleaning carpets:

1) What type of carpet? 2) What fibre is the carpet made? 3) Can the carpet fade after washing? 4) What backing is under the carpet? 5) Can it be clean with water (possible damage, shrinking, dye bleed)

Before you start cleaning, you have to explain to the customer or client, the possible outcome. If he/she gives you the go ahead, you can start cleaning. This is done to avoid any sort of problem that could occur after cleaning.

The carpet has to be tested for a dye bleed. This has to be done at the corner. This test will determine the type of chemical to use and the PH value.

One possible mistake, I have discovered a lot of carpet cleaners make, is that. They do not break the pile before they start vacuuming.

It is important to vacuum before cleaning, in order to avoid the dust going underground and re-appearing after cleaning.

Heavily traffic, soil and stain area has to be treated properly with stain remover and make sure they do not spread, while trying to remove the stains completely, do not over wet the carpet.

After, you have finished the treatment of the stains and spots. The carpet should be checked after cleaning, making sure, the spots, stains and soiling are properly removed, if not, should be treated again with a proper stain remover.

The carpet has to be uniformed, not patchy. Experience, has shown, that not all stains can be remove but with proper stain removal. You can achieve a good result.

After cleaning, the carpet pile should be combed up with a carpet groom. This will bring back brightness and hast the drying, and if, furniture is to be placed on the carpet, you have to make sure a furniture pad is placed underneath, the carpet to prevent rust, stains on the clean carpet.

Restretching Carpet Guide

August 26th, 2009
by Moses Wright

If I carpet becomes loose, wrinkled, or develops a bubble, restretching carpet can often correct these problems. As someone who needs to restretch carpet does not have a knee kicker or power carpet stretcher, these can be rented.

Restretching carpet can be a do-it-yourself project of the person follows step-by-step instructions. Following instructions to restretch carpet is not very difficult.

The carpet should not be completely removed, but should remain in the tack strips along one of the walls. It is generally recommended that the carpet remains secure along one of the shorter walls, the width, of the room.

The carpet needs to be released from the tack strips along the other three walls. Starting at the corner to release the carpet from the tack strips is often considered the easiest method. They pliers can be used to grab the carpet until the hand can be used.

The padding should be released by removing the staples. Using a pliers, the person should remove the old tack strips along the three walls.

New tack strips should be laid out tightly end-to-end where the old tack strips were. The person should nail the new tack strips into place.

The carpet length is typically stretched first. The length of the carpet is stretched from the wall where the carpet is still secure to the opposite wall.

Beginning close to the center of the room, the person should position the carpet stretcher slightly closer to any of the side walls that have a door.

The carpet should be restretch towards the corner of the room of the wall that has the door. The stretching should be done in eighteen inch increments. Each time the carpet is stretched, the person should secure the carpet into the new carpet tack strips.

The person can stretch the carpet about a foot away from the wall When stretching the carpet along the other side of the room. After the perimeter of the room had been stretched and secured into the carpet tack strips, the person needs to trim excess carpet and talk the edges under the baseboards.

The Story Behind Karastan Rugs

August 10th, 2009
by Russell V. Heintz

In 1928, a new trend started in the world of rugs. With the first loom in the hands of Marshall Fields, a national retailer was able to produce woven rugs. From there, Karastan rugs first started to make their appearance. Known as “Mystery Rugs, ” they were at a level that was impressive even for this day, and made the company well known.

Karastan went a step beyond what others might, asking people not only to look at – but also to step on and test – their Kirman pattern at the 1933-34 World’s Fair. Obviously, it came out looking terribly dirty, and all viewers were sure nothing could be done about it. Yet, with just a simple cleaning, it came out looking as good as new, to the surprise of everyone.

In the many years since then, Karastan has added a huge amount of products to the company, in so many different lines that there’s always something for everything. Sizes range from 2′ 10” by 5′ 9” and up, and come in wool or synthetic fibers, not to mention designs that will look good almost anywhere for anyone.

This is a company that is always working to make their products better. Different varieties of the original brand have come about in recent years. Sisal Wool is just one, and came about in 1992 as a response to a desire for sisal in the marketplace while making the product as easy to clean and care for as the rest of the line.

Another tool designed to make certain products more desirable was TeaWash, invented in 1997, which made carpets look old. This in itself doesn’t sound appealing, but it gave the rugs it was used on a very antique appearance, so that they appeared more valuable and expensive than they were for both buyers and all who saw them.

Their most recent development is a line called Sharpura, which came about in 2006. It retained much about what was loved in all their other lines, but was specifically designed toward more modern interior design, using colors that worked well and blended into a variety of settings. Again, you have several options within this set.

There’s far more to be said about the Karastan Company and its products, but even this should be enough to provoke your interest. With seemingly endless choices that should provide something for everyone, what’s holding you back? If interested, you should take a look and start finding the perfect rug for you as soon as possible.

Using Homemade Carpet Stain Remover

July 26th, 2009
by Moses Wright

Homemade carpet stain removers can be cheaper and safer alternatives to commercial carpet stain removers. There are homemade carpet stain removers for general use and some for treating specific types of carpet stains.

One general homemade carpet stain remover for drink spills and liquids containing food dyes uses a mixture of water and ammonia. First, dab any excess moisture from the stain with a paper towel. Mix two cups of water and two tablespoons of ammonia.

A small, clean towel should be placed into the mixture and then wrung out. After setting the wet towel on the stain, the person should press a hot iron onto the towel. The iron should be set to a low steam setting.

Before use, make sure the iron has water in it as necessary for the steam setting. After placing the iron on the towel above the stain, wait one minute before checking the stain. It may take a few minutes for the stain to be removed, but the person should check the stain every minute and not exceed five minutes.

A mild detergent like dishwashing liquid can treat a minor stain. After blotting the stain with a small amount of detergent, the stain should be blotted with a damp cloth and some water.

If the detergent doesnt remove the stain, rubbing alcohol can be used. The person should be careful to only blot the surface of the carpet with the rubbing alcohol since the rubbing alcohol can damage the carpet backing.

Hydrogen peroxide can be blotted onto a stain. No rinsing or water is required since hydrogen peroxide will turn to water after it has been exposed to light for a period of time.

A handy homemade carpet stain remover to have is a spray bottle filled with water with a little colorless shampoo added. Shaving cream, the white, foamy kind, can also be used as a homemade stain remover.

Baking soda is commonly used to deodorize carpets and clean pet stains. After the moisture is blotted from the pet stain, baking soda can be generously applied and allowed several minutes to draw out the stain. Allow the baking soda to dry and then vacuum the area.

The Best Carpet Cleaner For You

July 12th, 2009
by Moses Wright

Most carpet cleaners are similar to vacuums in design but use steam or chemicals to deep clean carpets. There are differing opinions on which carpet cleaner is the best carpet cleaner. Since some carpet cleaners are better at certain uses than others, the potential customer may want to read consumer reviews and product descriptions before choosing a carpet cleaner.

Using a carpet cleaner is part of carpet care. Carpet cleaners can help extend the life of the carpet by removing dirt that can weaken carpet fibers. Carpets should be cleaned every year.

The customer should consider how they would use the carpet cleaner when determining the best carpet cleaner for them. Some carpet cleaners are best for cleaning large areas while other carpet cleaners are designed to only clean spots or stains on the carpet.

Another thing to consider is whether or not people in the household have allergies. For households that have people with allergies, the best carpet cleaner may be one that does not use chemicals. Carpet cleaners that only use water are sometimes called vapor steam cleaners.

The Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge and the Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush 2080 are two upright carpet cleaners that get high consumer reviews. These upright carpet cleaners are used to clean large areas.

The Hoover SteamVac is more expensive than the Bissel QuickSteamer PowerBrush, but is less expensive that many other carpet cleaners with the same power. The Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush is an economical choice that still does a fine job even though it has less power according to consumer reviews.

For spot cleaning, the Bissell Little Green and the Bissell SpotBot often receive high consumer reviews for their ability to tackle small stains or spots. These carpet cleaners are impractical for an overall cleaning of a large area.

If the homeowner does not want to purchase a carpet cleaner and do the cleaning themselves, they can hire a cleaning service that specializes in carpet cleaning. One well-known reputable carpet cleaning service is Stanley Steemer.
