What a Waiver of Excess Is?

March 17th, 2010

Most car insurance policies have certain aspects of it that you will have to pay for if you have an accident or if your car gets vandalized. This part of the policy is commonly referred to a waiver of excess in many countries such as the UK. In the United States the waiver of excess is more commonly referred to as a deductible. If you’re in the UK and decide to rent a car then you’ll encounter a waiver of excess.

When the amount of the waiver of excess is exceeded in damages then you pay the amount of the waiver of excess and the insurance company covers what’s left over. So if you have a waiver of excess of $1,000 and an accident causes $5,000 in damages to your vehicle then you will have to pay the $1,000 up front and the insurance company will cover the other $4,000. While a waiver of excess is not included in the premium of the insurance policy you pay it is still very helpful.

In some accidents the damage is very little and you may not want to report it. In other cases the person who’s at fault may have their insurance cover the damage to your car. In either case you may want to avoid paying the excess waiver and higher premium costs from having an accident. If you’re a young driver then you will want to consider this heavily as your insurance premium is likely to skyrocket even with a minor fender bender.

A waiver of excess can and will vary from plan to plan. If you choose for your policy to have a larger waiver of excess then your monthly payments will be lower as the insurance company will have to cover less in the event of an accident. Over time the increase that you would have had to pay will save you a good amount of money. This is true as long as you don’t get into an accident and have to pay the waiver at a time that is bad for you.

You may see a waiver of excess expressed as a percent from time to time. A percent can be beneficial or harmful to you. The lower the total cost of repairs is the better it will be for you however if the damage is high then you’ll have to pay more then you may have originally thought.

A waiver of excess is usually used to pay off damage that has occurred to your car due to an accident, theft, or harsh weather. Liability only will never have a waiver of excess since it only covers damages done to other vehicles. It’s possible to have better coverage for your waiver of access as well as a lower amount that you have to pay. However this will also increase the cost of your monthly payments.

You might have been led to believe that the waiver of excess is only for auto insurance. However there are many types of insurance that have a waiver of excess on them. Some other types of insurance that you’re likely to see a waiver of excess is health, travel, and home insurance. If you do rent a car in the UK it’s important that you understand that your credit card can and may be charged for damage before it’s reimbursed by the insurance company.

Traffic Restrictions in France

March 5th, 2010

If you’re thinking about a self drive holiday to France never forget to take the necessary papers along with you in case you get stopped by the French police. It is not unusual for police in France to set up random road checks to make sure people are driving lawfully.

An official ID card, papers confirming car ownership, insurance papers and driving license are the proofs which should be produced to the police if asked to during driving in France. Car crimes in France is a growing menace and so the periodical checks.

Passport or a national card can be shown as the proof of identity. A period of one year from your entrance into the country is the validity period for the foreign driving licenses which are also accepted. Grey card or ‘cart gris’ and the green card or ‘cart vert’ are the documents supporting car ownership and insurance respectively.

Make sure you get both of these from the former holder if you’re buying a pre-owned car in France. Anyone caught driving in France without these papers is subject to an instant fine at the preference of the police officer involved.

Keep Photocopies of these car related papers and do not ever place them anywhere in the car so that they could be found by others. This is because of the fact that the thefts related to car are ever increasing in France and take care you should not fall a prey to these thefts. Besides you should not be caught by the police in France.

While driving in France, remember that you are outside your own country and the rules certainly are dissimilar. For instance it is a traffic error in France if you turn right at red light, while it is legal in the US. Otherwise it should be a pleasant experience for the drivers on the roads of France.

While driving in France be especially aware of the fact that all drivers coming from the right have priority. This is irrespective of the sizes of the two roads and even applies on T junctions. French drivers are accustomed to this so will often pull out of smaller paths onto busy main roads expecting you to slow down. The exception to this rule in France is when you are on traffic circles. In such cases preference goes to the person already on the circle.

50km p/h is the speed limit permitted in the built up roads of France. Do not exceed this limit and decelerate further when you are driving on busy roads. A white sign with red borders containing the name of the place in black indicates that you are entering a built up area. Similarly you can accelerate once you leave the built up area indicated by the same sign with a red diagonal line.

130 km p/h is the speed allowed on auto routes in France which are the largest motorways. The speed permitted on dual carriageways is of course 110km p/h where the limit is 90km p/h while driving on smaller district highways. These speed limits are not to be displayed on the roads and this is a defect and hence you are supposed to be conscious of these rules.

Motorway driving in France is generally a manageable experience. If you are unsure, then you might be interested in looking at alternatives such as Trains in France.

Gas Mileage Ratings Have Gotten Better Over The Years

December 22nd, 2009

Seriously, do you remember what you did the first time you drove by the gas station and saw that it said $4 for a gallon of gas? I know I started to search for the closest public transportation. But really, it did make me think about fuel for the first time in my life.

These gas prices have made people look into hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles in record numbers. But, you really don’t have to run out and buy a new car. There are some things you can do with the car you already have to improve gas mileage.

#1 On a regular bases, change the air filter — Your car has an internal combustion engine. That means the fuel mixed with air is what makes the engine work. If your air filter is clogged up you could be losing up to 10% of your fuel efficiency. Change the air filter a couple times a year. It is actually very easy and very inexpensive. It is seriously something you can do yourself, usually for under $10.

#2 Drive correctly — This is a simple one, yet nobody ever thinks about it. Most people keep their foot on the gas pedal and brake pedal longer than they should. You don’t need to gun it and you don’t need to wait until the last minute to brake. Try it. And you may see between 5-10% better fuel efficiency.

#3 Drive the speed limit on the highway — Driving at the posted speed limit my not be fun and exciting but, it will definitely help with your fuel consumption. Use the cruise control when possible. The more consistent you keep your speed the less gas you will use.

#4 You have got to get to your mechanic — Your car will flat out last longer if you get the scheduled services. Not only that, it will be as fuel efficient as it possible can, so do yourself a favor and see your local mechanic a couple of times a year. I can hear you groaning now.

#5 Turn off the Air Conditioner — While many newer cars have air conditioners that will recycle airs automatically through the cabins when it reaches a certain temperature, older vehicles will just continue pumping it out, wasting energy and fuel. If you can do with out it, do with out it.

These are easy things to do. Doing all or just a handful could greatly increase the money you keep in your pocket.

Why Opt a Luxury Car Rental?

December 15th, 2009

A luxury car is be very costly to purchase and yet, when we see one going down the street; we sometimes wish we could drive one even if only for a day or two.

Imagining ourselves getting out of the Hummer or a Bentley can already give us quite an exhilarating feeling; what more if we are really driving one?

With a luxury car rental, we can become a reality. We don’t have to have be a special event after all, before we get a luxury car rental. Simply driving down the road in one for the fun of it, is a good enough reason to rent one for a day; or couple of days even.

RENTING A LUXURY CAR ONLINE

Wherever we are around the world, we can get hold of a luxury car rental of our choice anytime we want to.

Online, we can see a wide selection of car rental websites that provide luxury cars to anywhere in the globe. Any make or model that we want, these sites can supply them for us. But, lest we get overly excited about getting our luxury car rental, we should first check out a number of providers so we can get the best offer that will suit our budget.

We will find that renting a luxury car online has many benefits aside from not having to leave the comforts of our homes in order to hire this kind of car. Firstly, rental car costs are relatively cheaper online than in actual car rental agencies.

One other advantage of renting on the internet is that the vehicle may be delivered to anywhere we are located or at the closest pick-up point instead of going to the rental office which can be too much of a hassle particularly if we are hiring a car in a foreign place.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WITH LUXURY CAR RENTALS

There are a few things that we have to check when hiring cars, especially luxury cars. First of all, the type of insurance coverage should we get together with our car rental. Since we will be responsible for the car during the period that we are using it, we have to make sure that should anything untoward happen, we won’t have to recompense for anything.

Dependable Car Shipping

December 2nd, 2009

Shipping the car across large distances is in most cases the most sensible and economic solution, saving effort, time, and car wear. There is shipment across roads by several types of carrier trucks, shipment by sea, and shipment by air of any type of car or motorcycle, whether modern, prestige, vintage, veteran, classic or sports.

Auto shipping is a term that normally implies a car will be shipped to its destination in a timely and secure manner, not shipped gradually or in parts. Most people think if a company has a promising slogan such as “You Can Depend on Us,” that you can, indeed trust them. This is folly. The company may in no way live up to its name, it’s just a bunch of words that sound ideal but really mean nothing. What does mean something to you is the experience and track record of the company.

Keep in mind, also that most auto shipping companies are small, independent operations distributed over most large countries by the thousands. They probably own just a few trucks.

The most basic factors of time and money should be your first consideration when looking for a dependable shipping company. If you give the shipper a flexible timeline, the price will be less than if make a specific time demand, and you will have a better chance at dependability of performance. Prices go up the more you are pressed for time.

The deal is generally set up with either a broker or a single carrier itself. You will find that some enterprising shipping company’s now act as their own brokers. This being true, make sure that you know that you are dealing with the carrier that also brokers for himself and not a carrier that brokers it out to some unknown company..

Do not sign contracts without having seen a valid MC license and always ask to see a copy of their Insurance Certificate and contact their insurance company to find out the exact terms of their insurance. Reputable companies will be glad to oblige a vigilant client, demonstrating their reliability, and will always be comfortably ensured several years ahead. You don’t want to trust the car you worked so hard for to a company whose insurance policy ends next moth without a guarantee that they will be insured or even in existence as an official firm at the time of transportation.

Looking companies up is always a good idea. Better not to be involved with companies which are not listed anywhere or unwillingly offer basic info about themselves. Check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to verify they are indeed a carrier and not a covert broker-carrier.

Doing the same via a professional broker may be even a better idea: it is the broker’s job to dig up any vital background information on even the most reticent carriers; and once you have that information your suspicions will be either justified or officially disproved, so that you may proceed more safely.

Are Discount Tires Safe To Use?

November 26th, 2009

Maintaining cars and upgrading accessories are probably one of the most costly expenses today. This is the reason why more people are looking for discount tires. You can’t just get any tire with a discount though. There are some things that you should consider.

Tire Safety

Discount tires doesn’t necessarily have to mean worn-out tires. The tires that you buy for a discount should be made of quality materials and durable. Look for reputable tire brand names when looking for a discount bargain

Where to Get Them

Discounted tires are everywhere. Tire dealers and sellers may advertise their discounted products through promotional ads and may even offer limited discount coupons to lucky clients. Here are some of the great places to shop for discounted tires:

- Check out store outlets in your area for seasonal discounts on their tires. You just have to keep your eyes peeled for sales so you can take good advantage of it.

- Try auction sites and retail stores where individuals may offer cheap tires. Sometimes though, it may be a little difficult shopping in sites like these. Unless the ad poster is a well known tire retailer, you may never know if a scam artist is trying to rip you off. Make sure you have some knowledge and experience with shopping for discount tires in auctions.

- Reputable online stores selling tires at regular prices may also be offering discounted tires at the same time. Check the discount section of these sites to keep updated on their offers.

Why Online Stores are a Good Idea

Searching for tires in reputable online tire shops can be advantageous. Here are a few good reasons:

- Online stores are the most convenient places to shop especially for tires. You simply have to provide some information about your tire preferences and your tire gets delivered right your doorstep. All you have to do is to sit in the comfort of your home in front of a computer.

- Stores that have been around for a long time have their reputation to both back them up and uphold. You’ll never get ripped off if you shop from a good store. You can even get good warranties or guarantees.

- There are staffs and personnel from these online tire shops who can offer you suggestions and answer your questions. They can also provide the perfect tire match for you. You simply have to provide online store personnel with data such as vehicle type, driving conditions and style of driving, to get the right tires.

- Online stores offer more than just tires. They also provide great online information about other important factors that can affect driving safety and car performance.

- Aside from delivering your discount tire, a good store will also be able to offer you suggestions on how to install your tire or where to have it installed.

Find Yourself The Best Rates In Auto Insurance

November 5th, 2009

Hoping to get the best possible price on your new car-insurance policy? A number of methods will assist you in saving lots of money. First, don’t wait until the last minute to begin shopping around. If your current policy runs out before you’ve decided on a new one, you’ll be left without coverage and be placed in a vulnerable position. Imagine the consequences if you’re involved in an accident while uninsured. Even if this catastrophe doesn’t befall you, a lapse in insurance coverage is not a desirable situation. It can cause difficulty when you try to obtain new coverage through a different company. Potential insurers will consider numerous elements, including your credit history, age, location, and current insurance, when deciding whether to offer you insurance and how much to charge you.

Suddenly that gap in coverage, which once seemed so innocent, looms large. A new insurance company that is examining your background will wonder: Did you not pay your former insurer’s bills? Did you forget just one time, or was it a habitual occurrence? Are you dependable? How often have you allowed your coverage to lapse? How long have you gone without coverage at a time? Do you often drive while uninsured? The answers to these questions may place you in a high-risk category, which in turn could cause your premiums to skyrocket.

You probably see now that planning ahead is the best way to go when you want to change your insurance provider.

One example of getting a reduced premium is taking your age into account. Rates will go down when you hit age twenty-five. If you see that your current insurance will run out as of the month of this birthday or after, then start to research alternative insurances with rates that will accompany your new age. Another example of changing your insurance provider ahead of time is if you are moving out of the area you live or switching jobs. It is a good idea to make sure you know what rates you are going into ahead of time so you know you can get the best deal.

Keep in mind that it is not always possible to save money. Difficulties may arise if you get a new job that places you in a higher-risk category, if you begin to drive your vehicle more frequently than in the past, or if you move a great distance from your previous home and therefore are not yet established in this new location. In each of these cases, be prepared to pay increased insurance premiums rather than reducing this expense.

When you pass the age of 25, have had no major life changes and your rates have been fairly consistent, this may be the time to consider shopping for a better price. If you let insurance companies know that you are specifically shopping many providers for price, they will often match other companies’ prices or even better.

An informed consumer is the one most likely to get the best policy for the best price.

Healthcare is different you cannot opt-out by not living so in essence mandated coverage becomes a life tax. Health insurance is one of the MOST deregulated industries, and that is the core of the problem. They treat people like objects, like numbered cattle, not like people. Health insurance is mandatory. The IRS would be responsible for making sure everyone has health insurance, and taxing those who are lacking insurance.

Accidents cannot always be your fault. However, one of the factors which an insurance company will look will be a good driving history. Accidents happen a lot, particularly in cities with a high amount of traffic; often, if people don’t know all the rules of that particular city, or are visiting, they can get in trouble. It doesn’t help matters that many are tourists who aren’t used to driving there and don’t know the roads.

Generally, most companies will give the possibility of paying out of date, but this has its price. Your bill could increase a few euros each time you pay off the term. Generally, if you have a loan, such as for a house or car, your lender requires you to have the proper amount of insurance to cover their interests. They don’t want you to just default on the loan if something happens to it.

Knowing enough about car insurance for 17 year olds to make solid, informed choices cuts down on the fear factor. If you apply what you’ve just learned about car insurance for teenagers, you should have nothing to worry about.

Sears Tires

October 23rd, 2009

Anytime you’re making a purchase, it’s best to look around at a few different stores to find the best deal overall. When you’re looking for tires, you might consider Sears tires. Many people have been pleased with their experience with Sears, while others wish they’d chosen a different company. In order to ensure that you’re making the best decision, you’ll want to carefully consider the pros and cons of various companies.

One of the reasons that many people like buying Sears tires is because they find it to be very convenient. They can take their car in and while their Sears tires are being balanced and rotated, they can shop around for their other needs. Many people like the idea of killing two birds with one stone, instead of having to sit in a waiting room at a tire repair store.

You can also buy your Sears tires online, which is more convenient for some. You simply choose the tires you’re looking for, pay for them, and then drive to your closest Sears to have them balanced. Many people like this option because they’ll know exactly what they’re going to spend before they get there, and it gives them the opportunity to shop around to find the best prices.

However, some people don’t like to buy Sears tires. Those who have needs for specialty or high performance tires find that Sears doesn’t always have what they need. While they can likely find a similar tire and have it delivered to Sears, this process can sometimes take days or weeks. If you want your tires right away, Sears tires might not be the best option.

Another issue with Sears tires is their pricing structure. Many people who shop around end up finding that there are other companies out there that can provide a better price than Sears can. Sears is not in business solely to sell tires, so they often don’t have some of the discounts and extras that other tire stores can offer.

One additional thing to consider is the lifespan of Sears tires. While they do come with a warranty, some are worried about the longevity of Sears stores in general. With many department stores closing or declaring bankruptcy, they worry that they’ll buy Sears tires, only to have Sears go out of business within a few weeks or months. The concern is that their warranty would no longer be valid and they’d have to pay another company for repairs that should have been covered.

2010 Honda Element Dog Friendly

October 23rd, 2009

The Japanese automaker Honda has just cooked up a new pet friendly Element for the U.S. market. The compact crossover is well known as a go anywhere do anything kind of vehicle, the car’s resilient interior allows you to play all day at the beach, store all your surf gear inside and simply hose out all the sand when you get home. Knowing how much consumers are already spending on their animals, Honda figured that the 2010 Honda Element Dog Friendly was the next logical step to winning over, over accommodating dog owners.

Starting at only $20,525, this new Element is full of features for man’s best friend. The entire cargo area behind the rear seats has been transformed into a pooch’s traveling palace. First of all Fido will be able to effortlessly enter and exit his new perch atop the back bumper via a very sturdy looking ramp that if wide enough could handle a wheelchair. Once inside the pup will ride on a plush foam cushion covered with a neat Dog Friendly Element print. In order to keep Rex cool Honda’s Dog Friendly engineers have built in a ventilation fan and to make sure that he won’t go thirsty they have come up with a trick dog bowl that ensures minimal spillage even around the hairiest of hairpins, guaranteed to keep that extra member of your family comfortable even on the longest of car rides.

The Dog Friendly Element is powered by Honda’s reliable 2.4 Liter i-VTEC four cylinder engine and shifted with a five speed automatic transmission that can send power to either the front wheels or with Honda’s Real Time 4WD power all four. The only thing left for Honda to install is a video monitor so that the passengers can check on the family pet while he is riding in his kennel on wheels. If you have any doubts about how safe this setup is you can rest assured that Honda has chosen the Takata Corporation to design the whole thing. Now you might be asking why is that name so familiar, if you have ever seen a racecar driver strapped in with a really cool looking green racing harness, those are Takatas.

The Honda Element lineup expands for the 2010 model year with an all-new “Dog Friendly” pet accommodation system designed to improve safety, comfort and convenience for dogs and their owners alike, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. The 2010 Honda Element arrives at dealerships nationwide by mid-October. The Dog Friendly Element is set to become available on November 16.

“The Honda Element has long been recognized as an accommodating vehicle for people with active lifestyles involving sports and hobbies,” said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of Product Planning for American Honda. “The new Dog Friendly Element takes that concept to a whole new level with specially designed features for dogs and their owners.”

Engineered to integrate with factory precision into the Element EX, the Dog Friendly equipment is intended to accommodate the secure transportation of a dog in the cargo area within a nylon-webbed car kennel. In daily operation the car kennel helps prevent a dog from interfering with the driver in traffic by keeping the pet properly restrained and out of reach of the driver. In the event of a frontal collision, the kennel is intended to help restrain the dog behind the rear seats, reducing the chance for the pet to be injured – or to injure human occupants during a crash.

The Dog Friendly equipment enhances pet comfort by providing a soft floor surface for the dog’s legs and paws along with a dedicated fan and a s–resistant water source. Convenience is improved for owners with an integrated ramp, easy to clean surfaces and a full suite of matching Dog Friendly accoutrements.
