Having a great resume and a killer cover letter is an essential start to your job search, but these should not be the only tools in your toolbox. This article will explain how to connect with a network of people who can help you to achieve your goal of a dream job and prevent you from being an “invisible candidate” hidden in the flood of job board applications that flows throughout the internet.

We all have a network of people whom we have come into contact with over the years. For example, your friends, family and work colleagues, form an integral part of your social and business network. There are many other categories of people that you can consider members of your network: former colleagues, friends of friends, members of the same club or professional association, neighbours and so on. Build your own network diagram of contacts, and then identify those you wish to re-establish contact with.

It is essential to keep in regular contact with members of your network. How to Write An Effective Cover Letter

The importance of targeting your resume to a specific employer cannot be overstated. In addition there is another tool in your armory that you can use to ‘hook in’ the recipient of your resume – the cover letter. It must also be targeted at a specific employer.

The cover letter will be read first by the potential employer so it must waste no time in catching their attention and then encourage them to take further action in opening your attached resume. If the cover letter is not effective then your carefully prepared resume may never be opened and read by the target reader. In effect, the cover letter is an instance of a sales letter designed to sell you and your resume to the reader.

There are three main types of cover letter -the broadcast letter, the letter of inquiry and the job application cover letter. Keep any cover letter to a single page. Check the spelling and formatting carefully. Remember that it is the first view of you that the reader will get. Don’t be afraid to personalise your writing style within reason. A stream of consciousness ramble will not go down well! Now we’ll examine each type of letter in turn.

Broadcast Letter

A broadcast letter should accompany any resume sent to a recruitment agency or job board. The first sentence should explain why you are writing. In this particular instance, the letter cannot be targeted at a specific reader as the letter will be broadcast to a wider audience that cannot be predicted. Instead you must target the broadcast letter to a specific role or industry sector. It is important to include your key skills and to highlight your strengths and experience relevant to the role or sector.

Letter of Enquiry

A letter of enquiry should be attached to any resume sent as a speculative enquiry to an employer. The first sentence should focus on why you are writing. It should go on to highlight your strengths and focus on your key skills and achievements. Keep in focus the employment sector you are aiming at and list those skills and achievements most relevant to that sector. Write simply and clearly using no technical language that could confuse a non-technical reader.

Job Application Cover Letter

A cover letter should be included with a resume sent as a job application to an employer. It’s important to include the company name in the address heading. The first sentence should contain the job title and the reference of the role you are applying for. It should go on to highlight your strengths and focus on your skills and achievements relevant to the role applied for. Nevertheless there are new tools to be mastered and many common errors to be avoided. I’m not a qualified career management coach, but my “wisdom” has been gained the hard way – by making all the mistakes then learning the lessons!

Target your job search

Do decide what is your “dream job”. You can’t find a thing if you don’t know what you are looking for!

Some things to think about

What sector(s) do I want to work in? What specific employers interest me? Should I aim for a junior/senior/manager role? What minimum salary or daily rate am I prepared to accept? Am I willing to relocate? How far am I willing to commute? Do I want a permanent or contract role? What life/work balance do I want to achieve?

Prepare the required documents

Do create a web resume in text format. Copy your updated word cv to notepad and repair the remaining formatting to make the text file presentable. This document will be used when you are required to paste your cv or resume into a text box when submitting a job application or profile information on a recruiter website.

Do create a range of covering letters. You must include a covering letter along with your cv or resume when you submit your job application to a recruiter or employer. A direct enquiry to an employer should also include a covering letter.

There are many reasons why people choose to learn English. They may want to gain access to English information such as in books, magazines, and newspapers. Having English can open the doors for a prosperous career path. It will also help when communicating with people when traveling abroad. Such devices include MP3 Audio Programs which they can take anywhere with them, English learning software that can be downloaded on their computers that includes translation programs, electronic translators or electronic dictionaries which can be used with a Pocket PC, Palm OS, PDAs, smartphones, and much more. There are also talking electronic dictionaries. Most of these devices can be taken anywhere. Many devices contain text-to-speech and voice recognition technologies, and a wide range of range of vocabulary. There are also dictionaries that contain common expressions and phrases, grammar references, a study list, SAT word list, complete grammar guide, exercises, tests, and language improving games.

With the vast array of tools available, learning English has never been easier. You will gain a great deal of satisfaction as you grasp the English language. Many people have taken advantage of the new learning tools available and have been amazed at how quickly they learn the language. How to Write an Investment Banking Cover Letter

Hardly anyone understands how to actually write a successful investment banking cover letter.

Don’t get me wrong: it’s true that most banks don’t actually read them or pay much attention to them. But if you’re applying somewhere small, where “fit” is highly important, they most certainly will.

Bulge bracket banks rarely pay much attention to them, because they receive so many applications and just don’t have the time.

If you mess up your cover letter, you have a low chance of getting in. But a great cover letter won’t ensure you an interview slot, either.

What are the most common mistakes made in a cover letter?

The most common mistake is writing too length of a cover letter. No one wants to read about your life story and how you were raised by wolves in a rural village – keep yours short and to the point, preferably under 500 words. Tell them who you are, your previous experience, and why you’re a good fit.

Another blunder is going crazy with listing useless and irrelevant trivia. No one cares where you were raised as a child (unless it somehow relates to finance), or what your favorite books are. Keep your information relevant and short.

Listing your experiences in a random, chaotic order is another common mistake. Use the standard intro, body, and conclusion format, and give your work history in reverse chronological order.

So how do you write a good investment banking cover letter? I would suggest the following structure:

Align your own contact information to the right at the top of the page, and the company’s to the left at the top of the page, just below your own.

Paragraph #1 should be your Introduction – tell them, in 2 sentences, who you are and how you found out about the opportunity.

Paragraph #2 is for your background – here, you need to say what you’re currently doing (student, working in another industry), and then tell them about your experience up until this point.

You should reduce irrelevant skills and hone in on what will be most useful in investment banking – like Excel, PowerPoint, and financial modeling.

Paragraph #3 explains why you’re a good fit. Use this to explain why your skills and experiences match what you’re applying for, and point out anything unique from your background that makes you an extra good fit.

Close the letter and conclude in your 4th paragraph. Remind them of your contact information and that your resume is enclosed.

Feel free to stray from this structure if you’ve had unique or extensive experience and want to cover it more extensively.

But always keep your cover letter brief, logical, and to-the-point – or it will sink your chances for landing an interview.
