The Debate on Drug Testing Policies

October 6th, 2009
by Bart Icles

Drug testing programs are not new to most offices and schools. In fact, there are already several schools, colleges, and universities who have already implemented random drug testing policies. However, there is still much debated on whether or not students should be subjected to drug tests, and there are lots of questions about the objectives of these random drug tests. This is the very reason why school boards, faculty members, and students are all involved in drafting drug and alcohol testing policies that are to be implemented in schools, colleges, and universities.

In many cases, random drug test policies require students who are involved in extra curricular activities to submit themselves to drug tests. The idea of having random drug tests is not to pick on certain students but these policies are enacted and implemented to help students lead cleaner lives. We are all aware of the negative effects of drug use, drug dependence, and drug addiction that we are all given choices to say no to prohibited substances. Drug test policies are anchored should be anchored on these grounds and not to discriminate or give prejudice to certain students.

Helping students to reach their maximum potential is the main goal of drug testing programs in schools, colleges, and universities. However, there are school administrators who are not totally convinced about the objectives and benefits of these drug test policies. There are those who believe that parents should have more responsibility over drug use concerns. They believe that these concerns should be addressed at the parent level and not to be legislated by school and student boards.

Nevertheless, many school administrators and teachers understand the importance of their role as second parents to their students. This has made many school and student boards decide to implement random drug testing programs that typically involve random drug tests on students who participate in all athletic-related extra curricular activities, including cheerleading, band and all associated groups, and show choirs and all associated groups. Independent drug test vendors usually conduct the testing of a certain number of eligible students who have been randomly selected at regular intervals with the help of a computer.

Indeed, drug and alcohol testing programs can be drafted, enacted, and implemented because of the growing concern over alcohol and illicit drug use among students. These programs and policies should also be taken as proactive approaches to maintain the safety of students while in school, to weaken the effects of negative peer pressure, to support students to involve themselves in drug treatment programs, and to keep students from the negative effects of drug and alcohol use to the learning centers of the brain.

Alternative Medicine For Management Of Natural Pain

October 3rd, 2009
by Richard Ealom

Constant Pain conditions are a growing problem in the USA. And while the discussion still rages about whether or not chronic pain should be managed as an unattached condition or merely a symptom of a different problem it is clear that pain management has become a thriving part of the healthcare industry.

Consequently, the use of pharmaceutical drugs for pain restriction has also reached an all time high point. Drugs such as Oxicontin, Vicodin and methadone, are front page news flash in causing Americas latest drug predicament, as a result, the consumption of cocaine and heroin have also reached levels not observed in this nation in 3 decades years.

Due to the economic and scientific phenomena of the pharmaceutical transformation of the twentieth century, thousands of yrs. of knowledge were rapidly dumped. Herbal medicine has safely and effectively treated pain for millennia, and is far safer than the synthesized, processed medications that todays doctors seem to be all too ready to pass out like so much candy.

In the realm of alternative medicine, there are many types of natural pain management that are in actuality, the source of where many of our oh-so-well-liked pharmaceutical drugs come from.

Codeine and morphine are opium derivatives that may be effective but are also highly addictive, and even aspirin is a by-product of willow bark. Many other plants have been used in natural pain management since ancient times, such as lavender and chamomile for slight pain issues and these plants have the added advantage of also helping with the emotional element of pain such as nervousness and difficulty sleeping. Plants like henbane and mandrake are so useful that they are even used very effectively throughout labor to relieve the pain of childbirth.

Some wonderful and powerful herbal medicine can also be found in the spice cabinet. Spices like turmeric, and ginger are 2 of the most powerful anti- inflammatories on earth. These plants are natural COX-2 inhibitors; they are the alternative medicine answer to the popular pharmaceutical drugs Celebrex and Vioxx. In the middle east, India and all over Asia where the diets are heavy in spices like to turmeric, and ginger and cayenne, where life is also far less well-located then our own, people have a far less incidence of arthritis and persistent back pain, and continue to work very labor intensive jobs such as farming and agriculture work even into their nineties.

There has continuously been an accepted school of thinking in allopathic medicine that it is all right to damage one segment of the body to heal another, thus even everyday over the counter NSAID pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, can bring about long term injury, acetaminophen to the liver and ibuprofen to the kidneys, in natural pain management many plants, roots, barks, and other herbs not only antistetic in nature but they are in addition anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic as well, and herbal medicine is kinder on the system and is more synergistic with the body allowing for superior assimilation of the necessary constitutes.

So you see that alternative medicine goes further than the usually established ideal of treating merely the symptoms and goes farther to treat many of the fundamental causes as well as some of the other components involved in recurring pain conditions.

More and more of us are turning to herbal healing methods to treat medical troubles while alleviating dangerous side effects posed by chemical pharmaceuticals. These methods have been utilized and confirmed effective, for thousands of yrs.

DWI Lawyers In Bexar County San Antonio Can Help

September 23rd, 2009
by Frank Totus

There are a lot of DWI attorneys in Bexar County that are happy to help drivers who have been arrested on alcohol related offenses. You can find a lot of these experienced attorneys in the phone book or on the Internet.

The lawyer’s ad claims about his experience and try to gain us in faith that they will fight hard for us. It’s really confusing as this is the same as every lawyer claims. So it is a challenging process to locate a right attorney than to find a Bexar county DWI lawyer.

You need to realize that driving while intoxicated is a serious offense in Texas and Bexar county. Any lawyer versed in the field will rattle off a list of punishments including fines and jail terms. It is quite possible even a first time offender can end up behind bars for days or months and still get a ticket of several thousand dollars.

If you have been arrested for DWI and are afraid of the consequences for you and your family if you are convicted, then you need to address the situation immediately. Failure to request a special hearing within fifteen days will result in a loss of your Texas driver’s license. Make sure you get an attorney who is aware of the procedures and won’t lose your case on a technicality.

By Texas law, a person is judged to be intoxicated if the alcohol content of their breath, blood, or urine is greater than .08 percent. The legal definition of intoxication in Texas can be even less than .08 percent in special circumstances. If a person has both a reduction in his or her normal mental and physical abilities, and has alcohol or some controlled substance in their body, they are deemed to be intoxicated. Additionally, drinking any amount of alcohol, regardless of amount, while operating a motor vehicle, is also against the law.

When you are convicted of driving while intoxicated in the state of Texas, the least jail time you can be sentenced to is 3 days. If you are caught with an open bottle or can of an alcoholic beverage, that automatically goes up to 6 days. Additionally, a DWI conviction results in a driver’s license suspension of anywhere from 90 to 365 days. Texas DWI attorneys say that even if you are not convicted, your license can be suspended as well if a urine test, blood sample, or breathalyzer test has a positive reading for alcohol.

In your quest for DWI lawyers located in Bexar County, search for one who is aware of the expectations for both sides, prosecutor and defender. Attorneys ought to realize the way to present challenges to blood and breath assessment results along with the way to safeguard what the constitution entitles you to.

DWI attorneys can help drivers with arrest charges for alcohol-based driving offenses. Locating who possess experience and can assist with these charges is as simple as searching the Internet or yellow pages. But, while it may be simple to find a Bexar County dwi lawyer, locating the best one will require more effort. First-time offenders can end up behind bars for days or months and still get a ticket of several thousand dollars, so the lawyer should know how to challenge blood and breath test evidence, as well as how to protect your constitutional rights.

Bipolar Depression And Other Depressions

August 16th, 2009
by Ken P Doyle

Since man started recording history, this depressive disorder has been known to be with us. When we read in the Old Testament, Job and the famous King David, suffered from this terrible mental disease . It was called by Hippocrates the Greek physician a black bile (melancholia). Negative in nature which affects how we feel, think and act, it is a clinical depression with a serious medical disorder. Written in literature arts many years ago, this depressive disorder or a bipolar depression disorder was portrayed as a weakness of temperament which was handed down by family members. It was Freud of the 20th century that linked the progress of depression to guilt and conflict.

The Two Divisions

During the middle of this century depression was divided into two:

Endogenous: may be caused by the body itself but nobody knows its source and is probably linked to a genetic origin. Bipolar depression falls under this type of depression.

Neurotic or reactive: depression is caused from outside, like the death of a loved one, losing somebody special and the loss of the only source of income. In 70s and the 80s, the focus changed from the cause, to the effects of depression on victims.

It is hard to know what causes depression or bipolar depression, but nearly all would agree that:

It is a syndrome that reflects severe sad, irritable mood which can be classed as abnormal sadness or grief. These feelings of sadness of depression are both intense and takes a long time when compared to the normal ups and downs.

The characteristics are the presence of negative thoughts, moods, and behaviors and not to mention the physical symptoms like, crying spells, aches in the body, very low energy in both work and sex. Other problems may include eating, weight and sleeping problems.

Depression increases coronary artery disease, HIV, asthma, and some other diseases. Death rate is alarming with victims of this depressive conditions.

The human costs of depression in the United States alone are huge which includes – treatment and other indirect costs, like absenteeism of workers and lost in productivity.

Bipolar Depression

The unique trait of this illness is, it’s not the outside that is causing the depression, but the brain producing its lows with the feelings of worry, sad, angry, guilt, isolation and hopelessness. This disorder is caused by the brains neurotransmitters which can cause sleeping and eating problems and a shift in moods.

Problems of Not Treating Depression

Like most serious diseases, bipolar depression can create problems with those living together, members of the family, close friends, and your boss at work. With family members of those with bipolar depression it can drain out the energy level of family members.

Bipolar Depression and Bipolar Treatment

Bipolar Manic -Exaggerated Or Unrealistic Belief – Bipolar Treatment

August 10th, 2009
by Ken P Doyle

Bipolar disorder is characterized by thoughts and mood disorders with long periods of depression followed by manic mood episodes. Depending on each individual, periods of depression or mania may last from just a few months to one whole year. Bipolar manic is sometimes referred to as mania or hypo mania (much lesser form of mania). In the hypo mania state, patients may be irritable, oversensitive and have an extremely elevated mood. Those people associated with bipolar mania have large-scale plans, be involved in several projects all at once and extremely talkative. One of the high risk factors for manic victims is the use of alcohol or cocaine for self medication.

The use of Anti-Psychotic Drugs

The main symptoms for those with bipolar manic is the accompaniment of psychotic thoughts, which can lead to very severe emotional responses and judgment problems which can render patients unable to communicate. These thoughts may get out of control and so manic patients may be prescribed mood stabilizing medication to control their manic symptoms. These medications include:

Clorazil : First used in Europe in 1971 for the treating schizophrenia. It is the first antipsychotic drug to be developed.

Risperdal: First sold in the Netherlands under this market name. This antipsychotic drug was used for the treatment of schizophrenia and later used for mixed and mania episodes and autism problem in children.

Zyprexa: Is a combination of two drugs fluoxetine Symbyax ( FDA approved) used as an antipsychotic for the treating schizophrenia, later for the treatment of bipolar.

First Line Treatments

The recent practice guidelines, for many doctors the first-line of treatment for severe bipolar manic episodes are:

Lithium: A chemical salts and used as a mood stabilizing drug primarily for bipolar mania.

Valproate: A replacement to lithium salts is believed reverse the brain process and affect the function of the neurotransmitter. It is used in bipolar treatment . Its main work is to stop or block transamination of GABA.

Monotherapy: With FDA approval for treating bipolar manic and bipolar I.

The Family Therapy

Quite effective for bipolar patients, a lot of people who are bipolar manic or depressive episodes forget that the first line therapy is a family-focused therapy. Patients with Bipolar Manic can get worse by fighting within the family. With this family-focused therapy, all family members must contribute by trying to manage their own behaviors so there would be no catalyst for the symptom to reoccur. This bipolar treatment -family therapy is for them to be alert to the signs and symptoms of bipolar manic symptoms and how to they can handle it when the signs appear.

Dialectal Behavior – Therapy

This kind of behavior therapy was first started by Dr. Marsha Linehan. In this type of therapy patients go through different stages of therapy that finally lead them to taking some control of their behaviors. The main focus of this kind of therapy is those patients learn to accept and control thought patterns.

Reducing behaviors which are self-threatening like being suicidal and other bipolar manic behaviors that obstruct with bipolar treatment is the first stage goals. For manic victims, building on these stages requires skill training.

Depressive Disorder Symptoms And The Eight Faces

July 19th, 2009
by Ken P Doyle

It is therefore important that victims of bipolar, parents, friends and co-workers know how to recognize the eight groups of bipolar symptoms in a depressive mood. To seek help at the appropriate time for your friend or a loved one, be certain to educate yourself so you can have an early diagnosis which is critical with this mental disease.

Loss of Energy: There is nothing mysterious involved with this bipolar symptom. Not having much energy when you try to compare it to the last few days. You still have a lot of energy and felt good and strong enough when you return from job. Your usual routine most nights would be to go for a run and a dinner out, but now you notice that you have run out of energy in the middle of the day. This can be seen by other members of the family, your close friends or coworkers that you have actually stopped what you love to do.

Fatigue ” fatigued both physically and mentally: Depression can cause physical fatigue and a decrease in energy level. Usually after sleep we feel refreshed, but bipolar victims instead become tired and fatigued. Trying to get up in the morning can take a lot of effort. Some experiences are, during the day they are full of energy but, once they get home they feel really worn out.

Lethargy – state of being drowsy and dull, listless and unenergetic, or indifferent and lazy: It is a very serious symptom. They are unusually drowsy or lethargic – spending hours just sitting in a place and totally unresponsive and simply uninterested in doing anything because their feeling and mind is quite heavy.

Diminished Activity – Cause to seem smaller, not important: Because of the loss of energy, fatigue and lethargy their level of activity begins to drop. These may occur independently of those symptoms. If you notice for example she leaves her work undone, or unable to do the simple things like sweeping the bedroom then, you know they have something you should be worried about.

Insomnia – inability to obtain sufficient sleep: Lying awake worrying, unable to get comfortable, feeling tensed or just having too many going on in the mind. Sleeping can be a big and tiring task.

Hypersomnia ” sleeping a lot: People in depressive mode have been known to sleep endlessly; some can sleep for more than 20 hours straight.

Loss of Interest in Pleasurable Activities : You normally love to go fishing, but now you are turning down your friends invitation. Jane loves to relax in her garden but, now she does not bother. Your son Tom has season tickets to the footy but has been staying home, and when you ask, he just shrugs and says, “I don’t feel like going.” One of the problem with this symptom is, it may be easier for others to spot than for the bipolar person.

Social Withdrawal: Because a lot will depend on the bipolar person’s personality, it may be easier to describe bipolar symptom, than to notice it. You may be able to notice the symptom when they stop going to social functions, this if the person is an outgoing person. No one will be able to realize that the withdrawal symptom is more serious if the person is a well known “loner.”

Other Changes

There may be other changes in activity not listed above which may also come with depression, but the eight listed above are those that are most commonly associated with the depressive episodes of depression.

Cancer Treating Drugs

July 16th, 2009
by Allan Tan

The use of cancer treating drugs is not restricted to chemotherapy. Though chemotherapy is a familiar term to many people, few know the medications used in this treatment. There are other medications that are used to treat cancer as well.

The use of cancer treating drugs is often incorporated into a treatment plan that may include many treatment methods. Some other treatment methods for cancer that may be used are surgery, radiation treatment or alternative treatment methods.

The cancer treating drugs used in chemotherapy are sometimes called anticancer drugs. These drugs work by ceasing the cancer cells ability to grow and reproduce. Doxil, Elspar, and Hexalen are examples of the many anticancer drugs.

There is more than one kind of chemotherapy. The types of chemotherapy differ by how the anticancer drugs are delivered to the cancerous cells.

Interferons help the body fight infections and destroy diseased cells. In addition to the treatment of many diseases and infections, interferons are used as cancer treating drugs. Interferon may be part of postsurgical care after a cancerous tumor has been removed in order to prevent the reappearance of the tumor.

Interleukins are cancer treatment medications that boost the immune system. These medications work by increasing the production of red blood cells that are crucial to the immune system.

The effectiveness of these red blood cells to destroy diseased cells is also increased by Interleukins. Melanoma, renal cancer, and lymphoma treatments often include interleukins.

The purpose of antibodies is to detect and target allergens. If the cancerous cells produce an antigen that is unique, a monoclonal antibody can be developed to target the cancerous cells.

Anticancer drugs can be delivered directly to cancerous cells by monoclonal antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies are often part of the treatment plan for lymphoma or leukemia.

Hormones are a type of cancer treating drugs. Hormonal therapy is used to treat certain cancers such as breast and prostate cancers. The hormones can block the growth of the cancerous cells.
