Why Flowers Are So Addicting

February 23rd, 2010

Flowers were the first ornaments, long before jewellery came in vogue. Through their vivid colours and fragrance, they have enabled people to enhance their beauty since ancient times. In almost all grand civilizations that the world has witnessed, there is proof of women and sometimes even men putting flowers in their hair.

Every flower has its own exclusive scent. Because of these varieties in scents, and of course the drastic differences in their looks, all major flowers have been assigned to particular moods or occasions. As many perfumes have been created by perfume makers as there are varieties of flowers, and the distinctiveness and fine differences among flowers’ fragrances have offered the industry limitless possibilities for many new products. But these days, artificial perfumes created from synthetic compounds are replacing the old perfumes that carried the purest fragrances of real flowers.

A flower’s fragrance has its appeal not just to perfume manufacturers. In fact the whole beauty of presenting flowers to people is based on their fragrance along with their appearance. The scent plays a critical role in improving the mood of a person and transforming the whole environment of a room. To an experienced florist, the true quality of good bouquets is that they should appeal to both the eyes and the sense of smell of a person. Similarly for any ceremonial occasion, people use flowers liberally so that the venue gives a naturally delightful fragrance.

However, in the search for more beautiful and long-lasting flowers, horticulturists down the decades have ignored the importance of fragrance in them. Other innovations in technology, such as genetic alteration of plants have hastened this pursuit. For instance, carnations and roses nowadays are picture-perfect, and stay like new for many days, but sadly they have lost the delicate fragrance that was once a key part of their attraction.

Thus, how good a flower smells, or if it oozes any fragrance at all, must be the foremost consideration for buyers when they are purchasing flowers. Expert advice of a seasoned florist will surely enable you to make the right choice of bouquets or flowers in a large quantity that you are about to purchase for a wedding or some other occasion.

To find a reputed florist in Singapore you can either do some quick research on the internet or enquire people about who has been in the business for quite some time now. Another way of selecting a florist is that you go with a flower outlet representing a well known brand. The big organizations are usually quite conscious about their standards and you can be assured of a good service as well from them.

Speaking With The Language Of Flowers

February 19th, 2010

Since ancient times, flowers have been used as a motion of kindness. We usually give them to those we love and care about. We gift flowers to show them how important they are, to show appreciation, to celebrate an occasion, or even to sympathize. What we don’t know is that sending certain kinds of flowers, and even their colors, actually have definitions of their own.

Floriography: (Language Of Flowers)

During medieval & Renaissance times, flowers were often given moral meanings. This is apparent in artwork where saints are often portrayed with flowers that symbolize the saints’ virtues. In an edition of Sixteenth Century Journal, Liana DeGirolami Cheney expressed that “some of the Christian symbols for Virginity or Chastity are the white rose, the myrtle, a vessel or vase, the lily, and the unicorn.”

During Victorian times, flowers began to create or add emotion. The language of flowers, sometimes referred to as floriography, began being used as a discreet form of communication. During the 18th century, sending messages in code using flowers became popular. Based on Persian Salaam, a Turkish secret language of flowers, a coded flower arrangement was sent to show feelings of attraction, even love.

A book entirely about flower interpretations by Madame Charlotte de la Tour, “Le Language des Fleurs,” dates back to 1819. Another book was written in 1884, titled “Language of Flowers” by Kate Greenaway, and it is still being used today.

Japan also has a language of flowers, which they call “Hanakotoba.” Greeting cards created in Japan follow the Hanakotoba code, and still use the flower-language in popular culture such as in films and animation, like the anime show “Wei Kreuz.”

Favorite Meanings Of Flowers

Purchase or borrow a flower dictionary to see the several meanings and interpretations of flowers. Some of the most popular flowers and their significances are listed below:

Buttercup – riches Pink carnations – a woman’s love Chrysanthemum – love in general Forget-me-not – true love Lavender – devotion, distrust Purple lilac – first emotion of love White lily – purity Peach blossom- long-life Red rose – true love Sunflower – pure and noble thoughts Yellow tulip – hopeless love

Speaking of Love – Don’t Forget Flowers for Valentine’s Day

February 7th, 2010

Imagine having a conversation with someone. Now imagine trying to have that same conversation without speaking or writing. Suppose it was an intimate conversation with someone you love. Suppose the conversation was with someone you’d like to know better. How would you develop a relationship or even carry on a conversation without speech or writing?

That was the situation in 1800’s Victorian England. They had a very strict etiquette. Extreme discretion was demanded at all times. Romantic conversations, even in a whisper or in writing, were off-limits. Emotional expression however, will not be denied. People soon found ways around the rules as they attached hidden meanings to many otherwise normal gestures and objects. Flowers in particular were given special meanings.

Specific meanings were given to every variety and color of flower. As a result, a bouquet of flowers could become a secret message. In addition, the way the flowers were presented, the way they were accepted also added special meanings. Many of the secret messages were romantic, but some were rejections and some were even insults. Complete conversations could be carried on using only flowers.

Small bouquets of mixed flowers, know as tussie-mussies, became quite popular. Together with the secret language of flowers, they allowed intentions to be declared, and refusals and acceptances to be made. They allowed the expression of wishes, thoughts and emotions that people of the time dared not speak aloud.

Eventually the symbolism became so complex that help was needed to decipher the messages. Dictionaries and even whole books were written to ensure that the messages were properly conveyed and clearly understood.

Before the Victorians, other cultures used flowers to express emotions. In ancient times cultures like the Greeks and Persians gave their own meanings to flowers. The Japanese too, created their own flower language. The exact meanings of the flowers and colors change over time to fit the needs of the culture but the use of flowers to express emotions continues to this day.

Many cultures had elaborate and lengthy courtship rituals. The giving and receiving of flowers was often an important part of the process. Those practices led to the prominent place of flowers in our modern culture. Valentines Day, Mothers Day, and Easter, among others, simply wouldn’t be the same celebrations without flowers and plants.

Like the Victorians, we still use flowers to express our emotions. Unlike them, our messages are typically much simpler. For Valentine’s Day this year, instead of sending a simple message, try a bouquet of mixed flowers for a message full of hidden meaning. Search online for “language of flowers” for some great ideas. Be sure to add a note to the bouquet to explain the deeper message. Don’t forget to order your Valentine’s flowers early to ensure a timely delivery.

Some Tips That Can Make Your Bouquets Last

February 2nd, 2010

Flowers are one of the meaningful gifts and liveliest decorations for nearly any occasion, all year ’round. Places such as offices and homes are more comfortable and lively when flowers decorate the place. What makes these gifts of nature so great is that they smell and look fantastic. They have bright colours, unique shapes, and they have the most wonderful smells only nature can give.

The only problem? Fresh flowers don’t stay fresh for long especially if you don’t take care of them properly. Not everyone are florists and gardeners, here are some tips that could extend the life of your bouquets:

- If you receive flowers that are in a box, act as quick as possible. Drench them in water, or preferably in floral foam or flower food solution. These can be purchased from your florist.

- Remember to always use a clean vase with enough space, and use clear water every day. Once the flower food solution or water becomes cloudy, replace it all right away.

- No flower foam or flower food? Make your own! Simply mix a teaspoon of bleach, a tablespoon of sugar, and a gallon of water. Mix well and you have flower food. Some gardening experts even say you can pour a 12-ounce can of non-diet Sprite or 7-Up in half a gallon of water The acid in the soda will slow down growth of bacteria in the water, while the sugar will “feed” the plant.

- Re-cut your flower stems at a 45-degree angle using a sharp cutting tool, such as a sharp knife, good pair of scissors, or pruning shears. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle, and do this underwater. This allows the stems to draw in water instead of air and the increased surface area from the 45-degree cut allows for improved water/solution absorption.

- Generally, some flowers last longer than others. Once they wilt, take them out of the vase.

- Remove leaves that will be under the waterline of the vase, because leaves in water tend to promote bacterial growth.

- Keep flowers in a cool, dry spot, in approximately 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. It is recommended to keep them away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. Failing to do so will cause your flowers to dehydrate and make them wilt prematurely.

Unraveling The History Behind The Custom Of Giving Flowers

October 11th, 2009
by Carol Scott

No custom helps in expressing human feelings in a more effective manner than gifting flowers or bouquets. Flowers and bouquets have acted as excellent gifts for birthdays and anniversaries, and are also useful for making personal gestures like conveying warmest congratulations, making apologies or cheering someone up.

Some people think that this tradition began way back during prehistoric times with excavators finding proof of its existence at ancient sites. Flowers have always assumed an important place in ancient Rome and Egypt and in the civilizations of ancient Greece and China whose legends and tales clearly reflect this custom. These ancient cultures considered giving flowers to be an effective way of communication of one’s thoughts and emotions. Greek mythology is filled with identification of certain flowers that were thought to be representations of gods and goddesses.

The custom of gifting flowers passed down to the Middle Ages, with the French and the English keeping the tradition strong. The modern tradition of giving a meaning to each flower is thought to have been imported to Europe after the French and the British witnessed it in Turkey.

Flower giving acquired much significance among the Victorians who widely indulged in this custom. Exhibiting feelings verbally and publicly was against the tradition during the Victorian era, and thus people used subtle means to express their emotions in the form of gifting flowers or bouquets.

The present rules of gifting flowers or bouquets were formulated during this era. For instance, a bouquet of red roses bought from a florist would generate a rather unfavourable reaction form your beloved if you presented it to her upside down. Red roses, that otherwise depict love, can depict anger if presented upside down. These ideas were so in vogue that in the 19th century, several books about the language of flowers were published and extensively read.

This tradition has come down the ages, and today people around the world participate in the act of gifting flowers to communicate their emotions. Today we have reached a stage where meaning is assigned to a lot of flowers, and preset guidelines in this custom are more significant than they ever were. An elegantly presented bouquet of red roses is said to depict love while lilies represent purity and grace. On the other hand, a yellow rose represents friendship while a single marigold depicts sorrow.

Science today has enabled us to grow countless varieties of flowers anywhere across the globe. If you are located in Singapore, then a visit to a Singapore flower shop will definitely provide you with the choicest of flowers, both local as well as imported varieties, guaranteed to express your emotions to your loved ones in a beautiful manner.

Floral Supplies

October 6th, 2009
by Andy Seitz

Florists have their trade secrets. Flower matching, ribbon matching, display choice, real flowers or silk flowers, real flowers or candy flowers are just the tip of the floral design iceberg. Key ingredients make or break a project for the floral artist. Floral supplies are the tools used to create those masterpieces, even though all designers have their own specific methods.

Florist’s foam, as a general rule, is the basic starter for any project. Wet foam is a spongy material designed to both hold water and keep the flowers in place, and comes in a variety of grades, each one slightly different; some are for more delicate flowers than others.

Foam isn’t always simple to work with. To make the piece easier, the foam should sit just higher than the vase or container the arrangement will be in. It should be wedged in tightly so it stays in place after becoming water saturated.

Among your list of necessary floral supplies is a craft saw; it’s simply the easiest way to shape foam. However, kitchen knives and wire also work if a craft saw is not available; be warned, be prepared to get covered in foam shavings, no matter what cutting method is used.

But what if you’re using a clear container? That saturated thick foam isn’t the most attractive thing to look at. In that case, a metal frog is a better choice. They are trickier to work with, but come in sizes between a half inch and eight inches, but ideal in a clear container. To fill up the rest of your vase, fake gemstones and small rocks transform into floral supplies, being careful to not crush the stems.

The flowers need something to be displayed in, generally a vase. However, among the list of floral supplies are other less common holders. Small decorative buckets, long planter box-containers, parfait glasses, and any number of other containers become floral supplies in the hands of a master florist.

But the most important floral supplies are-let’s face it-the flowers. Flowers can be bought just about anywhere: the grocery store, a gas station, an actual florist, or in bulk from an online outlet. A florist learns which flowers match each other, which colors to use for occasions, and how to arrange the flowers for best appeal.

The floral craft is not simple. In fact, it’s a trade with many little minute details. The best way to create the best flowers is to know the medium, and to become proficient in the art of floral design.
