Child Safety Locks – Understanding The 3 Most Hazardous Aspects Of Your Home

March 10th, 2010

Kids learn because of their curiosity. They are all tiny experimenters and everything inside their world is there for them to discover from. For these reasons we should never try to impede a baby or toddler from exploring their environment. On the other hand, we do need to keep them safe and sound.

Child proofing your house is a three stage process. Firstly you need to evaluate where the dangers are, then you need to buy appropriate child safety locks, and lastly you need to correctly fit the locks.

Here are three main areas which I suggest that you focus on while you are considering child proofing your home.

1. Kitchen – The kitchen is full of interesting things for a child. They realize that it is the source of their food. They realize that adults spend time inside the kitchen. They also know that they are not permitted to play there. For these reasons they choose to find out and understand about it. This inquisitiveness, combined with the dangerous implements of the kitchen means that draw and cupboard locks are pretty important.

2. Bathroom – At first the bathroom may not appear like such a unsafe place. But, a infant can drown in just 2 inches of water. A bathroom will in addition frequently contain toxic cleaning chemicals. In the bathroom you need to have all your cleaning products shut away in a secure cupboard. You also ought to have any medicines in a high up cupboard or a locked one.

3. Chemical products – We have already considered the bathroom, but where else do you have chemicals? Do you have de-icer for the car by the door? Do you have shoe cleaners by the shoe rack? Is there hairspray on top of a dressing table? Every one of these require to be found and put away inside a cupboards and draws which can be secured with child safety locks.

Now you have assessed your risks you need to find the solutions. On the whole safety locks are now adhesive, so they do not need screws or drilling and can be removed at a later date. It is best to buy more than you need as it is better to possess spares than to compromise the safety proofing which you have decided on. It is also useful to keep a couple of spares in case you have missed something on first appraisal.

In conclusion you are left with fitting the child safety locks. These are not usually hard, but try to fix them when the children are not around as you need to have them fitted correctly and you really don’t need distractions. You can always ask a friend or relation to come and install the locks for you,you will be astonished how many people will be pleased to help.

When you have child proofed your house you should have a greater peace of mind and be able to focus on constructive play and interaction with your baby or toddler.

Remain In Safe Hands With Security Alarm Systems

December 31st, 2009

Back in the day it was fact that the only ones who had security alarm systems were either rich or famous. Thankfully for us those days are no longer and we are seeing more and more affordable alarm systems become available to the average punter off the street.

These days we are seeing many home owner and DIY enthusiast purchase these alarms. If you are thinking about getting one, remember they come in as either hard wired or wireless security alarm system.

From within those two choices, there are going to be either open or closed circuit devices. This is basically the way they are set up from a technological standpoint and will effect how the alarm is triggered. It’s not something that you or I need to care about really.

Other options we have when it comes to security alarm systems are that of the motion detector. These are certainly a more sophisticated option and are triggered when motion is detected from within the vicinity of the sensor. Once the alarm has sensed any motion the sire will go off and alert the home owner.

One of the useful things that these motion detectors can do is the ability to be set and customised for your own requirements. Say for instance you are the owner of a dog and you know he walks around the house at night; well you can set it so the alarm ignores the dog and only concentrates on humans. Very smart!

You can also look into getting magnetic strips for your alarm system. A combination of these strips as well as a motion detector will be a perfect set up for your home security needs. Magnetic strips will make sure your entrance ways such as doors and your windows remain safe when the motion detector will always keep a keen eye on larger areas of your house.

If you are thinking of splashing out then why not go for a security camera too? These are ideal for anyone concerned with the goings on inside or outside their house. Another plus point to these is that they are getting cheaper by the year.

A lot of people that are going down the security camera route are choosing to set it up along side their PC. That way if any thief or would be criminal gets caught on camera, they will have the damming evidence on their hard drive for the police to inspect.

One last thing to consider is that you can also ask a home security company to monitor your alarm for you. They will employ a person specifically to monitor their client’s alarms and if any of them are to be triggered by something suspicious the home security company will immediately alert the authorities in your area to come by.

At the end of the day there are a lot of advantages to getting your home security set up with the latest security alarm systems. They may be a bit pricey but nowhere near as much as they used to be.

Whats Important To About Getting The Best Portable Generator

October 9th, 2009
by Carl Benton

Good portable generators are powered by gasoline or diesel fuel and include 120-volt power outlets for example like the ones in the walls of your house. If you don’t know already what makes a generator great is they give everyone safe, clean, portable power when your are in natural disaster or an outdoor situations like camping. It’s important to remember that powered generators will come in a few basic types usually standby or portable. What’s essential to understand is if you are looking to go camping or use your generator on some type of trip away from your home your better off getting a portable generator. Standby generators are installed usually around your home but do offer extended power and commonly are large in size.

What genuinely makes portable generators great is you can use them for any of your favorite outdoor recreational activities tailgating, picnicking, camping, and hunting to name a few. The normal fuel for a generator is usually is diesel or propane plus sometimes natural gas but there are some solar power generators out now on the market and they are definitely getting more popular as the engineering advances. One matter to recall is portable generators are exceedingly useful machines, particularly after the loss of electricity in the wake of a storm or other unpredicted condition. What’s greatest about portable generators are they are great in providing a clean, safe and portable supply power during extreme weather or camping in remote locations.

Pricing for a portable generator will normally start around $130 dollars and will work its way up for the high end to $2,500 dollars on some models, there’s always a fit for whatever variety of generator you require. I advise first calculating out how much wattage you’ll be needing. Before browsing for a generator it’s always good to check out all the electronics that you’ll be taking with you out in the field and adding up that total. If you do then you’ll never get a generator that can’t take all your electric powered products that you bring on your trip.

Some of the best portable generators and high quality ones are the Yamaha’s and Honda generators. What makes these generators great is there durability and power. These generators are made with excellent parts and will last a long time. If you are having a hard time finding the correct kind of portable generator our recommendation is look for a generator that’s tough and can meet your budget.

Portable generators are really useful tools but require safe treatment in order to prevent any serious injury or even death. It’s always wise if you are not experienced running a portable generator to take caution and read though your owners manual before trying to use your generator this will then cut any harm that could happen.

Security Cameras: Surveillance Cameras Equipment 101

October 6th, 2009
by Octavien Remillard

Security cameras will unveil the darndest things. You will have to decide in your heart what you are willing to watch and what you will not. Whether you are trying to catch an erring spouse you suspect, a teenager you think is dealing drugs or employees stealing, decide to what lengths you are willing to go. Check local privacy laws also. They vary a great deal. Once youve settled all that, you will find that these amazing systems will deliver a treasure trove of information.

Not that long ago, the only folks that could afford security cameras were James Bond, NASA and the police. Technology has worked its usual wonders. Anyone can afford a video surveillance system now. The image quality is great, the cost has fallen through the floor and they are easy to install and use.

Incredible things are now standard on all but the lowest priced security cameras. They include:

Incredible image quality.

Modern units are wireless. Installation is a breeze.

There is an incredible range in sizes. Soma are so small they can be hidden in a light fixture.

No tapes, no dvds to store. The devices have on board memories that hold hours of video.

The latest units go even further with memory storage. They have motion sensors that tell the camera to only record when there is movement in the viewing field.

To fine tune even further the motion sensing capability, the surveillance cameras can be programmed to deaden parts of the sensor field so that small animals or little kids playing won’t trigger the devices.

And, of course, cameras are available that can see in the dark.

Videos from your cameras can be downloaded and stored on a computer or similar device. This can be down over a wire or wirelessly if the situation allows the signal to get through.

Perhaps the most incredible feature of the modern cameras is their size. You can even buy empty cans of common household items like shaving cream and install a camera inside. You can also get special flower pots, garden ornaments and light fixtures all designed to house a camera.

The possibilities are almost endless. The difficult part is deciding which route to go.

First Aid Kits and Your Company — Did You Make These Mistakes?

October 6th, 2009
by Rachelle Wong

Every place of business has to have a first aid kit–there’s no avoiding it. But if there’s one thing safety businesses observe over and over, it’s that a big number of companies commit a series of fundamental errors when considering safety–screw-ups that are easy to avoid. None of these examples are grave errors, just ordinary things that can happen in an office.

But as any boss who has been so unfortunate to have suffered through a tough workplace incident knows all too well, ‘every-day’ work environment ignorance can lead to accidents that are very much not normal. With that in mind, I would like to explore five typical mistakes employees make with first aid kits, and how we can easily fix them.

1) Settling on the incorrent genre of kit. Depending on the kind of business zone you are in, your safety concerns will be varying. There exist several varying types of kits, all suited to the concerns of a particular space. Making sure yours is appropriate is the first thing you should do.

2) Creating their own first-aid kit despite not possessing any professional knowledge. Just like we use trained ambulance drivers for any medical concern or problem, we have kits which are fashioned to cover the biggest number of possible outcomes. If your company is putting together a custom kit, seek help from the people with experience.

3) Not knowing what’s in their kit. This is an endless problem–staff are confronted with an emergency, throw open the kit, and are entirely confounded by the larger part of what’s inside most first aid kits. Some simple familiarization will take care of the problem in a few minutes.

4) Over-extending the function of a portable kit. Lots of people use portable kits, and they’re very helpful. But very often, those exact same kits are brought into a business environment and casually become ‘the’ first-aid kit of the business. When you’re here, you’ve just violated rule number one once again.

5) Not keeping up their first aid supplies. If medical concerns are non-existent on a job site, all the better. But when a first aid kit really does get put into action, its components need to be replaced, and that can’t be held up–nobody can be a psychic about when an accident might take place in future days. An improperly stocked kit is almost like not having one at all.

Every single one of these issues can be dealt with in a matter of minutes–today’s safety equipment suppliers are fast, precise, and can give you perfect first aid kits to suit anybody’s desires. avoid doing these five common mistakes, and create a corporate atmosphere that’s safe for all your employees.

What To Look For When Purchasing a Gun Safe

September 28th, 2009
by Bobby Dillon

So you’ve bought your first gun and probably plan on buying a whole lot more in the future but now you are faced with the task of figuring out how to store such a dangerous weapon. Don’t worry, there are great storage devices out there called gun safes that will allow you to store your guns safely and protect them from a myriad of dangers. Here are a few helpful tips you might appreciate when you’re out on the town shopping for a new gun safe.

Fire is a horrible disaster. If and when your house goes up in flames you could lose all of your prized possessions and that’s never really a good thing. If you don’t want to run the risk of losing your gun collection along with all of your family photos and big screen televisions you should take heed and buy a gun safe that has a good fireproof rating. The fireproof rating will tell you how long a gun safe can hold it’s own under the constant heat of a fire. The longer it can last the longer your guns will last and the more time you will have to save them from the burning wreckage.

When you’re talking about gun safes you’re inevitably talking about locks. The locking mechanism on the gun safe you buy is more important than any other feature the gun safe may offer. After all, the locking mechanism is what is going to keep away the thieves and the little children. You want big locks, you want multiple locks, and you want to have a lock that will allow you and only you to open up the gun safe.

Gun safes come in all shapes and sizes and you’ll need that range based on the type of gun collection you own. It might sound obvious but the bigger your gun collection gets the larger you want to have your gun safe. If you just own a hand gun and don’t plan on getting any other weapons, just get a handgun safe and be done with it. If you own a rifle and plan on owning a lot more rifles in the future, you might want to think of purchasing a larger gun safe cabinet or something like that.

A gun safe offers a lot of protection but it can also offer some aesthetical value as well. The premium gun safe brands come in all styles of decoration. Some are painted with brilliant and glossy finishes, some have etchings or paintings of animals on them, some even have massive busts of golden animal heads on them. A decorated gun safe looks great in a hunting lodge or firing range and it can really set you apart from the other gun owners.

The next time you’re out shopping for gun safes just keep in mind that there are a few things that all gun safes need: they need to have good fireproofing, they need to have a sturdy and reliable locking mechanism, they need to be big enough to store your current and future gun collection, and they need to look good too.

Protect Yourself With the Right Home Security Equipment

September 28th, 2009
by Sean Davids

A lot of folks believe that it is worth any price to protect their property and loved ones. This is the reason that countless individuals purchase a home security system in order to ensure their safety. Everybody can acquire home security equipment that’s as advanced or as basic as desired. Depending on their budget and their requirements, everything can be arranged accordingly.

There are specific things you should consider when deciding on the type of home security system you want installed for your home. Begin by looking around your house, finding out where crooks are likely to enter, and figuring out how these points can be monitored. Motion detectors or infrared switches that will alert you if the beam is broken are some of the security devices you may want to consider. In addition, there is something known as pressure mats that are installed underneath a rug near a doorway or window.

Your home’s entry points can be made more secure with vibration sensors or door magnets installed around the doors and windows. This equipment is actually quite simple to install. Interior rooms can be monitored with equipment such as motion detectors. Some units can be adjusted to ignore pets moving around the house while they detect the movements of people.

An automatic dialer can also be added to a home security system that directs phone calls directly to a call center. Depending on the security device, the alarm may signal a fire, an intruder, or some other emergency.

If someone does manage to break into the house, you can make use of your closed circuit television to catch him or her. The clarity of these cameras can be enhanced by choosing a color camera either hardwired or connected wirelessly to the system.

Some other options include silent alarms and connections to dialer systems. Making use of a loud siren which is at minimum 200 decibels is a good option. Deterring potential intruders is one of the rewards of a local alarm. You might, though, be able to catch thieves in the act of burglary when you utilize a silent alarm that contacts a call center when triggered. But this type of home security system may result in you encountering the intruder well before the police arrive to help you.

Whatever you choose, you will feel at ease knowing that your home and family are sufficiently protected. The peace of mind you’ll get from installing the best home security system that you can afford is absolutely priceless.

Wireless Home Alarm System – Top 3 Reasons To Install One

September 22nd, 2009
by Troy Livy

Every modern home should be without a wireless home alarm system. Although it has so much to offer, not everyone is convinced of its importance in keeping your family and property safe and secure. Here is a look at what a wireless security system can do for you.

Wireless Convenience

When it comes to safety, it is best not to compromise. This is the reason why homeowners these days should set up a home security system. A lot of buyers would immediately opt for wired systems. These have to be connected to the wirings on a house or structure. Some say this is a very reliable arrangement and presents fewer risks of system failure. This is only a good idea though if your house is not yet entirely done. Setting up wired systems for houses that are already finished will present a lot of hassles and inconveniences.

Wireless systems are great alternatives. They do not have to be hardwired so you can install them on almost any part of your home. You can even transfer the components to different locations or bring them with you if you decide to sell your house. Because no hardwiring is required, you can install the system yourself by following product instructions.

Excellent Components

Wireless options are not limited. A basic kit would include, at the very least a set of sound alarms. These are window or door attachments that make loud or modulated sounds when they are tripped. More advanced models have infrared sensors that track movement through body heat. Some may have options to turn off alarm sounds but may instead send signals to remote receivers to inform you of a possible intrusion.

A door alarm is just one component of a wireless system. More complete kits can contain a variety of complementary components. Alarm packages may contain cameras, motion sensors, gas detectors, smoke detectors and even non-electronic security components such as latches, bolts and bars.

Monitoring Option

The most common home alarms are those that make noise. You can install a door alarm that makes loud noises when someone breaks in. What this system does however is simply inform you that someone is around. You would be lucky if an intruder is driven away by the noise. You would have a serious problem though if an intruder chooses to stay despite the alarm. Malicious entities are not easy to fight off. Fortunately, modern wireless systems can be monitored.

The best system to get though is the monitored wireless system. It can do more than simply inform you of a break-in. Monitored systems send signals to third party monitoring facility who can then react accordingly to the situation. This is manned usually 24 hours a day by security personnel who can confirm the possible danger to you and your property and call for help on your behalf. Since burglars are getting wiser and tougher, this is the kind of system you would want to watch over your back.

Getting a wireless home alarm system allows you and your family to sleep soundly knowing your home is being monitored carefully for break-ins. It can keep you, your property and the people you love safe and protected. You do not have to get one but common sense tells you that you should.

The Biggest Security Gap In Most Homes

September 14th, 2009

Any idea what the weak link is as regards security in a great many homes? It’s actually a door; in particular the largest door in the home and one that the average thief can usually open in less than ten seconds.

Yet this is the door that nearly two thirds of people now use as their main entrance (as revealed by the Chamberlain Garage Trends Survey) and trust so completely that one third of those surveyed don’t even lock the secondary door beyond this one.

No prizes for spotting that the garage door is what we’re talking about. This is now the most commonly used entrance to the house, used in preference even to the main entrance door. The fact that people nowadays come and go almost entirely by car, together with the pervasiveness of automatic garage door openers, is most likely the reason for this trend.

Unfortunately it turns out that garage doors are extremely straightforward to pry open. Not even those sporting mechanized opener systems and fancy electronic controls pose much of a problem to the average burglar. And of course once an intruder is effectively concealed with the garage they can start breaking into the house proper via the adjoining door (which as we discovered earlier often requires no more effort than trying the handle).

All those window bolts and heavy deadlocks are of little use if your garage is so poorly secured. Even if you do lock the connecting door, you are still providing potential intruders with a comfortable, discreet environment to go about their business and in many instances quite likely also providing them with useful tools (hands up all those who keep DIY equipment in their garage).

What then is the answer? Pretty obviously beefing up security on your garage doors should be a priority and installing (and remembering to use) a simple garage deadbolt provides an easy and inexpensive deterrent to the opportunist intruder.

But for high quality security you should think about fitting secure garage doors. Some of the best examples look for all the world like conventional wooden garage doors but conceal an internal core of reinforced steel plates and rods, and are able to withstand a sustained attack from experienced burglar using a variety of tools and considerable force.

Of course, like all things you need to weigh up the cost and benefits of enhanced garage security. But among the benefits to consider are increased protection for you, your family and your possessions; possible reductions in insurance premiums; adding to your property’s value; and ability to make better use of the space knowing that it is fully secure.

If you found this article interesting then be sure to check out this additional article about wooden garage doors.
