August 18th, 2009
by Kylee Thompson

Summer time means good things and fun times. Bar B Q’s and neighborhood parties are always a lot of fun but you must have some patio furniture to accommodate the party. Most of us have some sort of form of patio furniture, but for most people it is not very nice and breaks easily. What if i told you there was a type of patio furniture that lasts the test of time and does not need replacing?

The type of furniture i’m talking about it teak furniture. Teak furniture has been around for a long long time. In fact teak wood was used by shipbuilder in the 1400’s because of the strength of the wood. Teak wood is from south east asia and from india. It is kind of rare as it is not grown in the US but there is furniture and teak wood available for purchase.

Teak wood also has some really neat properties that make it really a special type of wood. Teak wood has rubber and natural oils which cause the wood to last time and sun light. Teak also has a low moisture count which makes the wood decay much slower than most other woods.

Teak wood is made into all sorts of different kinds of furniture styles. The most popular style is that of patio furniture that is outdoors. The main reason is because teak wood is very durable and needs little maintenance or upkeep. This makes teak wood pieces perfect for outdoor settings and use.

Real teak wood furniture can be purchased at most furniture stores. The catch is making sure you find a real piece of teak wood. There are a lot of imitators out there so make sure you know where the wood came from and make sure the moisture count is low. If you do these two things you will know that the teak furniture is legitimate.

Buying a quality piece of teak furniture will compliment your home or yard and will last the test of time.

Outdoor Carpets: Criteria For Choosing The Most Suitable One

August 10th, 2009
by Zak Stanislawski

Outdoor carpet choices, styles and applications have become almost overwhelming, and the builder or homeowner is faced with a far more difficult choice than at the times when there were only a few options.

There are different types of carpets for all kind of specialized uses and situations, and depending on where outside your house you want to put it, there are more choices.

Still, one of the most important and primary considerations is the amount of dampness that the carpet will be subject to. This will be a primary determinant of the underlying needed quality, and therefore of cost.

The basic material for outdoor carpet production is olefin, which is a derived version of Polypropylene its texture is a little rough compared to other choices but it’s quite resistant, so it’s a decent enough choice for heavy duty use. Its resistance to sunlight is also good, so colors won’t fade on an olefin outdoor carpets.

Depending on the quality, grass type carpet can or cannot be used outside of covered areas. The cheapest outdoor carpet of this kind is pretty thin and will not last long if constantly exposed to rain.

Better quality grass-like outdoor carpeting is somewhat more expensive but can be laid out in fully exposed outdoor areas. It is advisable to select high grade outdoor grass carpet with a marine backing if the zone for installation will be subject to even moderate amounts of dampness.

The other big family of outdoor carpets is based on imitating indoor styles, but adding waterproofing. The materials are mostly synthetic, but plant-based or woolen outdoor carpets also exist. Most have a water-repellent backing and are treated to be highly mold-resistant.

To a certain extent, you can judge outdoor carpets according to similar criteria than for indoor carpet. For instance, look at the density, check the backing, the trimming and finishing, and so on.

Always check the backing of the carpet, as this is the main element that blocks moisture from seeping up the ground and that ensures that the outdoor carpet will have a long life.

Also, shop around to make sure that you compare manufacturers and retailers for the best price to quality ratio, and don’t stop informing yourself about the different kinds and qualities of outdoor carpet.

Outdoor Carpets: Avoid These Pitfalls When Choosing

August 10th, 2009
by Zak Stanislawski

Outdoor carpet choices, styles and applications have become almost overwhelming, and the builder or homeowner is faced with a far more difficult choice than at the times when there were only a few options.

Not only do the materials and manufacturing techniques differ a lot from one carpet to the next, there are also options depending on the location of the carpet installation, whether it is meant for a patio, for a poolside, and so on.

Still, one of the most important and primary considerations is the amount of dampness that the carpet will be subject to. This will be a primary determinant of the underlying needed quality, and therefore of cost.

The majority of outdoor carpet is made from Olefin While not being the best choice for indoor carpets due to the material’s jagged texture, it is a great filament for outdoor carpeting. Olefin is very resistant to stains, moisture, and sunlight. The latter characteristic means that your carpet’s colors won’t fade.

Depending on the quality, grass type carpet can or cannot be used outside of covered areas. The cheapest outdoor carpet of this kind is pretty thin and will not last long if constantly exposed to rain.

On the other hand, thicker and better quality grass style outdoor carpet can be laid down almost anywhere, and is also much more resistant to heavy traffic. Generally speaking, it is a better and more long-lived option.

The next alternative is one of many kinds of plush outdoor carpet. These come in a variety of different materials, some natural but mostly synthetic, and are manufactured to resemble indoor carpeting, with the added benefit of being more resistant, as well as mold- and waterproof to a certain degree.

To a certain extent, you can judge outdoor carpets according to similar criteria than for indoor carpet. For instance, look at the density, check the backing, the trimming and finishing, and so on.

Ask if the carpet is sunlight resistant, and if it has moisture resistant marine backing. These are the most important things to consider when buying outdoor carpet that will be subject to a lot of moisture. You can expect that the price will increase proportionally to density, size, and similar criteria.

Also, shop around to make sure that you compare manufacturers and retailers for the best price to quality ratio, and don’t stop informing yourself about the different kinds and qualities of outdoor carpet.

August 9th, 2009
by Norm Manter

If you are thinking about constructing a new patio this summer or just overhauling the one you have, there are lots of materials you can choose from. They each have their benefits and drawbacks but they will each contribute to a beautiful patio if used correctly.

If you live in a climate that is both hot and cold, you might want to consider building your patio out of flagstone. Coming up with some great flagstone patio ideas is for people who need a patio that can withstand the elements but want something more than the usual plain concrete. Flagstone is very strong and will not crack or deteriorate as quickly as some other rocks. It can be bought as the real natural flagstone or it comes as man made as well. No two flagstone patios will ever look the same as the rock looks different every time you build with it. Flagstone is a great choice for your patio for both its durability and the design you can create with it.

Another one of your options for patio materials is tile. There are as many tile patio ideas as there are kinds of tile. Tile comes in all sorts of textures and colors and this is one of the main advantages of using it for your patio surface. The possibilities are endless of what kind of design, color, and look you can make your patio when you use tile. Another benefit is that tile is very smooth which makes it easy for walking with little chance of tripping. Some other patio materials might not be a smooth and the patio furniture might not sit perfectly square on the patio surface.

Brick is a popular choice because it looks good anywhere on or around the house. Brick is also pretty easy to lay and sometimes people with little experience can do it themselves. An advantage of brick is that any patio built out of it will look very substantial and hardy. Additionally, brick gives you an appealing color that looks very good if you surround your patio with a nice garden. Brick has been a favorite material to build houses and patios with for years and that will not be changing any time soon.

Lastly, you can have your patio constructed out of slate for that original look. Slate is a stone that comes in all sorts of textures and colors that will allow you to build the one truly unique patio in your neighborhood. Slate can be found at most stores that carry stone and if not, they will know where you can go to find it.

Patio Umbrella Canopy Fabrics – Make Sure You Choose The Right One

July 19th, 2009
by Joann Weiss

If you enjoy lounging outdoors in times of good weather, then you most certainly are enjoying the wonderful attributes of patio umbrellas. These elegant items look great and provide a bounty of shade that helps you stay cool and relaxed.

This kind of patio furniture isn’t the simplest device in the world, though. Their many seperate components determine the way that they function and look. Choosing better components is the main difference between a high and low quality umbrella.

Of all the parts of a patio umbrella, none provide aesthetic beauty and practical function as much as the canopy. The specific fabric used to make the canopy is crucial in determining how the entire umbrella will work.

There are many different factors to keep in mind when choosing a fabric for your patio umbrella’s canopy. By figuring out the answers to these different factors, you’ll be well informed as to which kind of fabric will work best for your home.

First determine how frequently you think that you will be using the patio umbrella. The more that you use it, the more the canopy fabric will be exposed to the sun. The sun’s UV radiation can damage certain fabrics and cause their colors to fade.

If your area of the world is moist and damp, you may need to deal with the problem of mildew and mold. Many patio umbrella canopy fabrics are resistant to these two factors, but this of course will raise the price so you should only get it if necessary.

Some patio umbrella fabrics can become damaged by being washed over and over again. Others put up with this kind of stress without a problem. Figuring out how much you’ll need to wash the canopy before you buy one will help you pick out the right fabric.

Once you figure out your needs related to these three factors, you’ll be ready to consider what patio umbrella canopy fabric is best for your needs. You’ll be able to make an informed decision which will certainly lead to years of enjoyment under the sun.

Help With Choosing Outdoor Carpets

July 6th, 2009
by Zak Stanislawski

At the present time outdoor carpet comes in a fantastic variety of both colors and styles, so having guidelines for choosing is really important. There are so many types available that it is crucial to be knowledgeable before choosing what carpeting to buy.

You also need to consider where you are going to put the outdoor carpet. Whether it’s for your deck, the patio, or for around your pool, there are different types of outdoor carpeting that are on the market.

In all cases, the main thing that you will have to consider, regardless of the outdoor carpet style that you will ultimately choose, is the amount of humidity that the outdoor carpet will be subject to. This will have a strong effect on needed quality and price.

The typical outdoor carpet from previous decades, artificial grass style, is still very much in vogue and makes up one of the two big families of outdoor carpeting. While there are not a wide number of colors and other options to choose from, the basic version isn’t any different from the stuff used to pave sports stadiums in the seventies.

There are several different grades of outdoor carpeting available. The cheapest is the typical grassy green material that you can find decking out outdoor sports venues. Economy grade outdoor carpet is decent enough for application underneath covered outdoor areas such as patios.

Better quality grass-like outdoor carpeting is somewhat more expensive but can be laid out in fully exposed outdoor areas. It is advisable to select high grade outdoor grass carpet with a marine backing if the zone for installation will be subject to even moderate amounts of dampness.

The next alternative is one of many kinds of plush outdoor carpet. These come in a variety of different materials, some natural but mostly synthetic, and are manufactured to resemble indoor carpeting, with the added benefit of being more resistant, as well as mold- and waterproof to a certain degree.

Plush outdoor carpets are available in different grades, and you should judge them according to similar criteria than indoor ones. How thick are they? How many knots per square centimeter? What size? How is the finishing? Plus, make sure to note their water-resistance.

For good quality outdoor carpets, you should also look at the back and make sure that it has moisture resistant marine backing. You don’t want water to seep into your carpet from underneath.

Look at the offers of more than one seller and don’t skim on a bit of money going for the cheaper option as it will last much less and leave you with the need to replace that outdoor carpet.

This Year’s Patio Furniture Covers

June 27th, 2009
by Jane A Moore

This season’s patio furniture covers are dazzling. There is no doubt that next year’s designs will be equally as colourful. Don’t be surprised. Fashion trends tend to respond to the current economic atmosphere. In times of economic hardship, colours tend to be brighter and patterns tend to be more cheerful. Whether it is in clothes or patio furniture covers or other household items, the trend this year is to be bright and colourful.

Although, I will be happy to see the end of the recession I don’t mind its impact on fashion. I love vibrant and cheerful designs so I love this season’s offerings. I have seen bright red, blue and yellow daisy designs that bring to mind the flowing peasant skirts and dresses of the 1960s. I have seen wide pink and purple stripes that remind me of the fashions of the 1970s. This year the colour choices and pattern choices are spirit lifting. Designers know what people are looking for and this year it is fun, fun, fun.

If you like colour you will not be disappointed this year. However, colour and pattern design are only a small part of choosing patio set covers. There are some underlying aspects that remain the same from year to year. The aspects that change very slowly or that seem resistant to change relate to the day to day functionality of the patio furniture covers. These aspects relate to the overall durability of the covers, the ease of removing the covers, the style of fastening the covers, the quality of the covers, and the general ability of the covers to protect patio furniture from the elements.

I am often asked about what I look for when buying outdoor furniture covers for me or my clients. The answer is twofold. The first thing I look for is the type of fabric used in the manufacture of the covers. A few decades ago, furniture covers tended to be of a very poor quality with a layer of plastic bonded to a cotton lining. The sun and rain destroyed these covers quickly and quickly the covers looked shabby. The covers that are available today are made from newer more durable and advanced man-made fabrics. These fabrics are both breathable and water resistant. The combination of these factors protects the furniture from the rain and dew and at the same time allows mildew producing moisture to escape.

The next thing I closely examine is the durability of the cover. This is very important to me. I look at the cover seams. I want to make sure that all of the seams are double or even triple stitched. I am very cautious if I see any lose threads. Lose threads are a good indicator of poor quality. I also pay close attention to the manner of fastening the covers. The better quality outdoor furniture covers fasten with good quality zippers. Completely zip and unzip all of the zippers. Ensure all of the zippers are in proper working order.

When buying outdoor furniture covers you should keep a few things in mind. Colour and pattern are important but these aspects are only a part of what should be seriously considered. The functionality of the covers is very important too. Are they easily removed? Are they easily washed? Is the fabric protective and durable? A proper consideration of all of these factors will allow you to purchase the best patio furniture covers for your family.

What Are Outdoor Carpet Tiles Made Of Artificial Grass?

June 21st, 2009
by Zak Stanislawski

There are several types of outdoor carpet. Two common ones are outdoor carpet tiles and grass outdoor carpeting. The tiles are more users friendly. They are easy to install, easily fits in any room, with less waste. They come in a large variety of styles and colors. This makes them ideal when matching to room dcor. Grass Outdoor carpeting is most often used outside where it exposed to the weather.

Outdoor carpet tiles are as durable as other outdoor carpet. They are especially nice in high traffic areas. You can easily replace the few damaged tiles instead of the entire carpet. This saves time and money. You do not need to add padding because it is inside the tile. This too will save money.

It is best if you use tiles on wood, cement, stone and ceramic floors. Interlocking tiles should be used on patios and decks because they allow for moisture to drain.

The tiles should sit for 24 hours in the room before installation. This allows them to adjust to humidity and temperature levels. You should make sure the floor is clean before installing outdoor carpet tiles.

Installation is easy. All you do is peal off the backing and press down. Be sure to properly align the arrows otherwise your pile will not go in the same direction.

Grass outdoor carpeting is the other outdoor carpet type. This product made with olefin, Is less expensive than other carpets. It has a lower maintenance. Because it is treated for sun, chemical and weather exposure it is often used on decks, patios, play grounds and golf courses. Usually it is moisture, stain and fade resistant.

Before buying grass outdoor carpeting you should decide what it will be used for. Will it be exposed to pool chemicals, moisture or the sun? If it will you need to buy carpet with marine backing otherwise you will be fighting with mold and mildew. The carpet you purchase should be protected from fading and harmful chemicals. If the area it will be placed is high traffic then you need thicker carpeting. This will increase life of the carpets.

When choosing between grass outdoor carpeting and outdoor carpet tiles remember that tiles are good for areas protected from harmful rays where grade grass can be used for outdoor patios, decks, and around pools.

Use an Outdoor Swing to Create a New Look

June 20th, 2009
by Mycroft Finlayson

Outdoor gardens can be a wonderful, peaceful place to relax and unwind or they can be a place that is overgrown or barren that you avoid. It all depends on the time and effort you put into designing a garden that gives you the kind of environment you can enjoy.

Much of the time, the right garden design for you will start with just one piece, such as an outdoor swing, and you’ll build on that piece to create your own special vision. Make sure that everything else you buy fits with that one big piece, and the garden will come together more cohesively.

The major pieces you choose will determine the style and feel of your garden, and you’ll have to carry that through to all other pieces of furniture if you want to get a coherent atmosphere. Choosing pieces without a plan will lead to a jumbled, incomplete feeling garden, not a peaceful retreat.

If you plan to work around one central piece, choose it wisely. Keep your overall look and garden in mind. This will help you avoid creating a space that doesn’t work well for you and that looks thrown together without thought.

Take your time when you are buying garden furniture. Since this piece is going to be central to your garden, you want to select something you love and will enjoy using and looking at. As the central focus it should be comfortable and enduring. It may be difficult to find other pieces to go with it but if you take your time you will find them.

I can tell you this is true because the first time I designed my outdoor spaces, I wasn’t thinking. I bought pieces without considering how they’d look in my garden at home, and just based my purchases on how they looked in the store. The result wasn’t a garden that I felt comfortable with. It wasn’t terrible, but I didn’t like it, and no one else in the family really did, either.

So, I got rid of it! And everything else I had purchased to go with it. I decided to get rid of everything and start over. I sold some of it online and gave some of it away. I was back to square one with a blank slate. This time I purchased an outdoor swing that I loved. I could see it in my garden. I could visualize what I would put with it and how everything would look when it was done.

I have had that beautiful swing in my garden every since. It has remained the center piece of everything else I do. If I’m considering buying an item to add to the garden I ask myself if it will look good with the swing and if it will fit with what I visualized originally for my garden space. Consequently, I now love my garden. It is the beautiful, peace place I had always envisioned it would be. And I love spending time there relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.

How Find Comfort and Style in an Outdoor Patio Furniture

June 13th, 2009
by Rosa Silvera

Without an outdoor patio furniture set, your patio space looks bare even though it has a stunning design. You can spend your free time with your friends or have occasional dinners with your family in your home’s outdoor space. Imagine the inconvenience of staying in your patio without any chair to sit on and a table where you can eat. So get a good set of patio furniture to add comfort and style to your outdoor space.

Are you looking for the outdoor patio furniture set that best complements your outdoor space? You need to consider a few things when choosing a patio furniture set. First, how often do you plan to use your patio? Second, what do you usually use your patio for? How many people will use the patio? What furniture items do you need for your patio? Lastly, how big is your patio space? These factors help you determine the types, materials, and features that you’re going to look for in a patio furniture set.

After thinking over the various factors mentioned above, you should determine the types of furniture that suit your patio area. There are a lot of outdoor patio furniture sets to choose from, the most basic of which are those that consist of tables and chairs.

If you rarely use your patio or if you hang out with a few people, then a patio furniture set that consists of a table and two to four chairs will do.

However, if you usually accommodate many guests in your patio, it would be better if you get additional furniture items for extra seating such as love seats or benches. To make your patio more comfortable for you and your guests, you furnish it with a swing or a hammock.

When shopping for a patio furniture set, you should also take into consideration the materials it’s made of. Materials for outdoor patio furniture include plastic, wood, wicker, wrought iron, aluminum, and stainless steel.

Steel and wrought iron are the most durable materials for patio furniture. Choose these furniture materials if you want your patio furniture to last for a long time. If you prefer an outdoor furniture that can be easily moved from one place to another, an ideal option is either plastic or aluminum furniture set. If you want to turn your patio into a nice, cozy nook, the best choice is furniture made of wicker.

When picking the right outdoor patio furniture for your needs, keep these two things in mind: comfort and style. With a comfortable and stylish patio furniture in your outdoor space, you and your guests will surely enjoy spending some time there.
