The Incredible Chicken Coop Plan

December 30th, 2009

To avoid any problems after the chicken coop is finished and ready, it is imperative to start out right. Before you go ahead with the construction, contact your municipality or local council and learn about the regulations on keeping chicken in residential areas and ensure that you are not breaking any laws.

Next, do some research on plans for chicken coops and shortlist a few that you prefer. You can find a multitude of options online, at the local library as well as the local bookstore. After this, try to get the plans for the chicken coops you like. Choose one and you can use this as the base for your coop plan.

Now go out in your backyard and decide where you will place your coop. Keep in mind the dimensions of the plan and ensure that it will fit. Each chicken needs 4 square feet of space to itself, and if you don’t plan to add a run, then make that 10 square feet.

Also consider the following factors:

1. Is there enough natural sunlight available for the coop? 2. The ground should be well drained and must not be damp or wet. 3. Check for the nearest water outlet for cleaning. 4. Will the coop be exposed to any drafts? 5. Check if the boundary or fence will be strong enough to withstand predators. 6. Are hawks and owls a problem? You many need a net on the coop for security. 7. The ground should slope so that water doesn’t collect in puddles. 8. The coop must not be too close to the neighbor’s house. 9. The coop should not stick out like a sore thumb in the surrounding area.

The next step is to sketch out the coop to figure out the technicalities of the plan. This must include:

Windows for sunlight

1. Vents 2. Feeders 3. Perches 4. Lights 5. Flooring 6. Nesting boxes

The placement of these must avoid:

7. Dampness 8. Lack of light 9. Moisture 10. Smell caused by the buildup of carbon monoxide 11. Feeder height should be appropriate, and 12. Safety

Now that these have been sorted out, you can now start with the coop plan. You might want to work out an estimated cost of the materials and construction. Once everything is sorted out, it is most likely that you will not face any problems with your coop.

At Last Peace And Quiet

December 26th, 2009

Perhaps you have a barking dog which is giving you problems and think the only way to stop him would be a small dog barking collar. It is always best to consult other peoples opinions when looking at something like this product. These opinions can be found online likewise the suppliers of this product.

Comparison of peoples views is good when you are looking and preparing to purchase a product such as this and make sure they are discussing a small dog barking collar.

Then you will need to decide which type of small dog barking collar you would feel happy using. Would you go for one which emitted an ultra-sonic sound that only your dog could hear? Would you rather have one which just vibrated when it sensed your dog was barking? Would you choose one which would give the dog a shock when they barked? Or would you consider one which released a small spray of citronella the best one to choose? You will find that the citronella collar might not be available in a small size and they need constant refills of citronella, especially if your dog barks a lot and the collar sprays a lot. Citronella might help in another way, it would keep the mosquitoes at bay also !!

None of these products will harm your dog in any way, they will only be aware of a sound or feeling they are not used to which should stop them in their tracks to puzzle it out. Or, the Citronella spray gives them something going on that they just don’t like – the citrus smell is not liked by dogs at all.

Be sure to consider carefully buying the sonic sound collar if you already have other animals in your house because they can hear the sound also and it will likely confuse them completely.

You have to think about your neighbors if you own a dog which barks a lot. Perhaps you leave every day for work and you have no way of knowing how long your dog barks after you leave.

Do not lose sight of the fact that your pet can be taken away from you if you do nothing to curb its incessant barking.

Static discharge anti bark collars are really designed specifically with small and toy breeds in mind. The collars themselves are very light and small and the shock it delivers is so very mild no harm can come to your dog. It merely lets the dog know that this excessive and unnecessary barking is not acceptable and pretty soon the dog gets the message and stops the barking.

These battery powered collars have to be weatherproof otherwise they would be useless and it is simplicity itself to change the batteries to replace or re-charge.

Ahhh, Peace and Quiet!

Various Types of Goldfish

December 13th, 2009

There are different varieties of goldfish and these are mainly distinguished through dissimilar head shape, looks and colors. Certain goldfish have bulged up eyes or those that face upwards. The placement of the fins is a unique feature used for differentiating the goldfish types. The tail’s shape aids in their classification because some comprise split tails, others double tails while others have single tails.

Fantail goldfish have exceptional unique tails. Making a distinction of the different types of goldfish is important since, the fish responds to diverse factors such as water temperature and breeding methods.

Goldfish are classified in four different groups that ought to be taken into account when examining the various goldfish categories.

Single tail goldfish: These have quite slender bodies and come in various colors from orange to variegated. Examples of this kind of goldfish are Commons, Bristol or London Shubunkis as well as Comets.

The second category of goldfish is those that have double tails. The tails have various colors including orange, red lipped white, white with orange mixture, gill covers and fill. Fish in this category include Wakins and Jikins.

Double tailed Dorsal finned goldfish are oval shaped with billowy and long fins. The colors of the fish differ significantly. The fish in this category include Demekins, Ryukin, Pearlscaples, Pompoms, Moors, Veiltails, Orandas, Fantails and Telescopes.

Double tail goldfish without dorsal fins are the same as their counterparts with dorsal fins since they are oval shaped with billowy and long fins and come in various colors. They include Eggfish, Celestial, Bubble Eye and Lionhead.

Comet Goldfish are capable of thriving in conditions of extreme cold and are available in diverse colors especially orange, red as well as yellow with black spots. The tail fin is the main thing that differentiates it from other types of goldfish. The tail fin has two lobes that are positioned above each other. Comet goldfish are hardy and do well in garden ponds. They need large space because they are fast swimmers. They socialize well; thus should be kept with other fish.

Lastly, the Oranda goldfish is an attractive fish variety that is well recognized by the skin growth that surrounds its head taking the shape of a hood or cap. The growth is also present at the sides of the fish’s body. The popularity of the fish has increased mainly due to its appearance and its different colors. The Oranda goldfish is available in different colors such as white and red, red and black, calico, white and black, tricolor, bronze, calico, blue, silver, white, chocolate and black. This fish variety detests cold water and is susceptible to water temperature changes.

Functional and Decorative Aquarium Gravel/Rocks/Substrate

December 7th, 2009

There are many considerations to look into when putting up your own aquarium. These include the aquarium type, filters, accessories, and the substrate. Substrate choices are widely varied. The choices range from gravel to sand and from aragonite to crushed corals, among others. Among the most popular substrates is aquarium gravel.

Which substrate does your fish tank need?

Different types of substrates are needed by different aquariums. Whether you have a tropical tank, a marine tank, a fish-only aquarium, or a planted aquarium, you have to know which substrate types work best. Aquarium gravel may be ideal for fish-only tanks and even planted aquariums.

The importance of aquarium substrate

If you don’t place the right substrate in your fish tank, the glass bottom can be quite uncomfortable for the fish. Light can be reflected, which does not often sit well with many fish types. Also, using the right substrate can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, giving your aquatic pets a healthier environment. Aquarium substrates are also necessary in achieving a more natural look for your aquarium.

Aquarium gravel for aquarium owners

Many aquarium owners prefer using gravel since this is one of most commonly used fish tank substrate nowadays. You can find gravel in most aquarium and pet stores. Also, gravel does not require heavy maintenance, although you will still need to check them regularly for any trapped food or other impurities.

Fish-only aquariums typically require beneficial bacteria, and aquarium gravel has been known to encourage the presence of such. You can also find coarse gravel types and fine gravel, in sizes ranging from 3mm to 4mm.

Colored aquarium gravel has also become more popular, especially for aesthetic purposes. However, painted aquarium gravel may lose its coating over time. Plain colored gravel is much safer. It also allows you to see if any food particles have become dislodged under the substrate.

Buying tips for aquarium gravel

Placing gravel into your fish tank should be done with care. As much as possible, you should aim for a depth of anywhere between 2 inches to 3 inches. If you go any deeper, this may increase the chances of your fish tank developing hydrogen sulfite, or the so-called rotten egg smell, because of trapped food.

Fine gravel is more ideal for bottom dwellers or bottom feeders. If you have a planted aquarium, you will need to use a nutrient-rich layer as the base. Gravel may be used for the upper layer. For fish tanks with crustaceans such as crabs, aquarium gravel is also recommended.

Sean Kerring is an aquarium expert and breeder who has been working with fish for more than twenty years, when his parents gave him his very first fish tanks. He always tries to use new and differently colored aquarium lights to change the themes of each of his tanks, including different aquarium substrate compounds.

How to Practice Responsible Fish Keeping

November 2nd, 2009

Responsible fish keeping starts with your aquarium setup. Make sure that the aquarium you choose is large enough for the fish that you want. Many people believe that fish will grow to the size of their tank, but stunting their growth by keeping them in a small tank will reduce the lifespan of the fish. Eventually, you will need to upgrade the aquarium if you started with a too-small tank.

Research the kind of fish you want to have so you will know the size of aquarium you should buy. Pick an aquarium that can accommodate your fish in their adult size. If your fish becomes bigger than your tank, putting them in a bigger aquarium is the sensible thing to do.

Before buying different species of fish, find out first if they will co-exist peacefully in your aquarium. Responsible fish keeping dictates that you ensure the safety of your fish from other fish in the aquarium and that your aquarium provides the right water temperature and pH levels to sustain all the fish in the tank. Refrain also from buying too many fish because even if your aquarium might accommodate their numbers and sizes, the oxygen in the water might not be enough for all of them.

If your aquarium becomes crowded with fish that have grown to adult size and aquatic plants, do not release them in just any body of water. People, unfortunately, sometimes dispose of their big fish this way. They will probably not survive a change of environment or if they did, might prey on local species instead.

A lot of tropical fish found in the aquarium cannot continue to live outside the aquarium especially in frigid waters. Releasing them in this environment is like giving them a death sentence. If you cannot afford an upgrade of your tank, returning your fish to the pet store is a better alternative.

Aside from the fish tank, you will also need a heater and water filter. These are essentials in your aquarium. The type of your water filter will be determined by the size of your tank. The type of the fish you plan to have will determine the type of heater you need.

Water changes and aquarium cleaning should still be done regularly even if you have a water filter attached. This is to ensure the highest water quality for your fish. Check the water weekly for the required pH, nitrites, and ammonia level. You can also reduce the maintenance required for your tank as well as reduce water changes by using EcoBio-Block Family products which help to keep your water clear and healthy with beneficial bacteria.

Small fish are often neglected when there are bigger fish around. All your fish should receive proper care and nourishment. Research their food requirements and give them only what is considered proper diet for them. Buy supplies only from aquarium stores that have good reputations. Ask pet stores for their recommendations.

Responsible fish keeping means a dedicated effort to take very good care of all the needs of your fish.

When Do Cats Reach Full Size?

October 9th, 2009
by Moses Wright

When does a cat reach full size? The answer to this question depends on the breed of the kitten.

A general guideline for the maturity of domestic shorthair kittens, including American shorthair, is that they reach full size within the first three years, but often within the first two years. Some cat breeds mature much faster or slower than this.

A cat breed that has kittens that mature fairly quickly is the Singapura cat breed. Singapura kittens are between fifteen and twenty-four months old when they reach full size.

Chartreux kittens reach full adult size when they are about three years old. Kittens of the Somali cat breed are about eighteen months old when they reach full size.

Savannah kittens often reach full size in two to three years. Most resources state that Bengal kittens reach full size in two to three years but some Bengal kittens may take slightly longer.

American Bobtail cats may be three years old before they reach full size. A hybrid of domestic cats and jungle cats known as Chausie cats can take two to three years to reach adult size.

Ragdoll kittens may take up to five years to reach full size. However, most Ragdoll kittens will reach full size when they are from three to four years of age.

Some cat breeds have similar maturity timeframes as the Ragdoll kittens. Turkish Van kittens can take three to five years to reach full size. Though it may take up to five years, Maine Coon kittens usually reach full size in three to four years.

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a slow-maturing cat breed. The kittens often take four to five years to reach full adult size. Siberian cats can also take up to five years to reach full size.

Size is not the only physical change that a kitten may experience as it matures. Though they may be born with amber eyes, the Egyptian Mau kittens’ eyes turn green by the time they are eighteen months old. Coat color and coat texture changes are common in many cat breeds.

A kitten does not need to reach adult size before being spayed or neutered. Waiting too long to spay or neutor a cat can lead to some undesirable consequences such as spraying in males or an increased risk of mammary cancer in females.

Find Out How To Efficiently House Train Those Hard-nosed Yorkies!

October 7th, 2009
by Alicia Ainsley Summers

Certain breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers may need a little extra TLC when it comes time to housebreak them. House training puppies can be tough work, but well worth the time and effort invested. With the smaller breeds sometimes it takes a wee bit longer to develop perfect potty habits.

First thing to determine is inside or outside. Yorkies don’t need much space, so they are perfect for those who live in apartments or condos. Some Yorkies are very resistant to going outside in stormy or snowy weather, in this case an indoor potty option is something to consider. Another consideration to remember is that these dogs have small bladders, so they can only hold so much! If you are gone at work for much of the day, your puppy might not be able to wait to use the toilet that long. In this case, choose a discreet area of your home for the puppy training pads. All you need is a small area of grass or patch of dirt, just remember that spot and always go right to the same location.

Starting and ending the walk with an opportunity to go potty is the best approach until you begin to understand your little one?s potty schedule. Going to the same location is important to help your Yorkie associate that location as the potty area and if he can smell urine, that sends a signal that this is the place to go. Being a good neighbor is important, so always carry litter bags so you can scoop the poop. It’s fine if your Yorkie happens to go while you are out on the walk, this is not considered an “accident” since it didn’t happen on the floor or other unwanted area.

Sometimes dogs avoid going outside in bad weather and then will have an accident in a discreet location indoors. A sweater is a great way to address that situation and make going out in poor weather more tolerable. If this is the case, you might want to think about an indoor alternative for these situations.

Don’t be afraid to heap lots of praise and affection on your puppy in order to help him learn proper potty habits quickly. Verbal praise should be given immediately and enthusiastically after they are done with their business. A favored treat such as a small piece of cooked chicken or dried liver offered as a reward may give him just the incentive needed!

Anywhere from a week to a month house training a dog is common, and for Yorkies it could be a little longer, so have patience with your little one! If you want to develop a great relationship with your Yorkshire Terrier, learning how to train a puppy is the best thing you can possibly do.

Which Cat Litter Mat?

October 6th, 2009
by Angela Suarez

A good cat litter mat is one that your cat will walk over when leaving the litter box. If he does not then you might have wasted your money.. it only works if he uses it.

You have seen it before, again and again; your little feline is a big time digger. In fact, he seems to think he can make it to the other side of the globe. Where is he trying to go?

What happens is that bits of that annoying litter eventually get sprinkled all over the floor and carpet of your home… even more so with the fine type of litters like clays.

Since you like to try and keep the house clean and tidy you get out the old mop, broom or vacuum to clean up his scattered litter, only to find he has dug out some more litter after a few hours.

Our feline friends just naturally dig and cover up their excrement… some with more zeal than others.

The best way to keep your house from becoming beachfront property is to buy kitty a litter mat. A good one that he will not have problems using.

There are two main types of cat litter mats; one is the type with raised ridges on it. You will know when you have found it because when you press on it, it feels a little funny on the palm of your hand.

The softer mat (without bumps/ridges) is like a regular mat that you would not mind walking on without shoes or socks. The second type with ridges may be one that your cat might not like.

There are some felines, that will not like stepping on those mats with texture.

So if you do not like the way it feels.. then your little picky kitten may reject it.

A cats little paw pads are very sensitive to touch ( a lot like the soles of your bare feet) and quite a few may outright refuse to step on the mat upon exiting their litter box. Many might even go through the trouble of jumping their way out of the litter box to avoid stepping on the mat which will then scatter more litter around your home.

Oh joy for you.

This is not your dream scenario now is it? Not to worry, because your cat may just have no problem at all using a textured variety.

If you find that the mat is not really keeping litter in the box or its designated area like it should then check to see if it has the ridges. If it does, this could be your main culprit.

Try and switch to a softer litter mat to see if this does the trick, you might be surprised to find out that kitty likes the softer mat better!
