The use of solar panels to attract the energy from the sun is becoming more common than ever before. If you do not have the money to professionally solar power your home, you need to learn a few things about solar panels.

The first thing you are probably wondering is if it is possible to buy just one solar panel to power your entire home. This is one of the most common questions asked by people looking into installing their own solar power system. You might even have a list of things in your home that you would like to put on this single solar panel such as an air conditioner, dishwasher, TV, and so on.

I hate to have to tell you that the answer is no. It is not possible to power your home with a single solar panel. I have been off the power grid for over 12 years now. I have seen solar panel technology come a long way. But even the most expensive solar panel can not power an entire house. You are going to need 15 solar panels and at least 10 deep cycle batteries. If you have to keep your air conditioning running often, then you are going to need even more solar panels and batteries for your battery bank. Remember that your air conditioner is costing you the most money out of anything else in your house.

Most people don’t realize that you don’t actually run anything off a solar panel. You run things off your battery bank. It is the solar panels that charge the battery bank only. The reason for this configuration is that the voltage spikes or voltage volatility would be to great if you tried to run something directly off a solar panel. One cloud moving between your solar panel and the sun could literary fry your appliances with a voltage spike. You need a steady and even flow of electricity to power things in your home. This is what the battery bank does.

You should slowly increase the number of solar panels by plugging more and more of them into your battery bank as you take more and more things in your home off of the power grid. Don’t move your air conditioner over to the solar panels at first. Instead, consider switching it to gas.

Also, if you work during the day, leave your air conditioner off. In this case, your solar panel system that is powering your whole house is generating power and making your meter run backwards as you are selling the energy during the day back to the power company. Then when you get home at night, you buy energy from them when you turn your AC on.

You should be able to cut your bill by 75% or more doing this as long as you don’t live in too hot a climate and thus don’t have to run your AC that much at night.

The sun is a giant star in our solar system that provides heat and light to our planet. Every day, the heat of the sun washes over Planet Earth as a form of solar power. So, What is residential solar power and how does it work?

Residential Solar Power Basics

The energy imparted from the sun arrives as heat radiation to the earth and other planets. This is known as UVA or UVB radiation. The benevolent sun is showering the earth with its warmth and light.

A lot of the sun’s rays bounce back into space, but enough of is absorbed by the earth for us to fuel every home across the planet. Unfortunately, our created reality is not a match for our imagination. So we have a well understood concept, but it is a concept that we are a long way from manifesting.

All those solar panels you see on rooftops and in back yards. They are a lot more streamlined these days. There was a time when only the rich could afford solar power for homes.

Now heres the scientifically technical bit, so hold on tight! Ill make it brief, I promise you!

The science of residential solar power does not take a rocket scientist to understand.

Residential Solar Power – The Science

Solar panels are made up of a grouping of photovoltaic solar cells. These cells are almost always made of silicon or some other semi-conductive material. They are then arranged uniformly,positive to negative, end to end, to create the solar panel device.

You get the best effect by placing this panel at the south of the building to capture the largest amount of sunlight. When the sun hits the solar panel, the sun’s radiation is absorbed into the solar cell as energy.

Scientifically, the light energy (aka ‘photons’) strikes the solar cells forcing electrons to be knocked loose.

Now that they are freed up, they rush to the other end of the array and in their motion, the selfsame electricity you use to power your appliances in your home is made.

We’re not finished yet though. The electricity is still in a Direct Current (DC) format. Traditional homes require Alternating Current (AC), so some more work needs to be done to make this a useful exercise.

Here, the residential solar power system starts to work its magic. The electricity from the solar panel is sent to a DC disconnect device. This device interrupts and changes the flow of the electricity from the array.

Right about now, you can use one of two methods to send the electricity around your home. You could directly connect your residential solar power system to your homes electricity system. You will then have to pass the electricity through an inverter to transform your DC current into AC current.

You electricity supply is almost ready to use. It passes through the inverter direct to all the AC outlets in your home.

The other option is to invest in a few deep cycle batteries and direct all that extra solar energy you don’t use in the day into them so they can store it for a later time when you might need it more.

Conclusion

Using solar power for homes will lower your home electricity bills. When you establish your very own residential solar power system you will be pre-empting the future that undoubtedly will require sustainable alternative renewable energy.

Are Biofuels a Green Energy Source?

Global climate change has driven home the need to find alternative energy sources. Fossil fuels have been killing our environment for some time. The global community is now realizing that change cannot wait…we must find alternative energy sources now. Not any source will do. We must find green energy sources that heal rather than hurt the environment. Biofuels are one such energy source.

Liquid biofuel is capable of being used in all types of vehicles. It is not only renewable but also natural. Natural compounds such as soy and vegetable oil are used to make biofuel. In addition, there are absolutely no petroleum used in the make. This liquid is nontoxic and biodegradeable.

Cars are one of the world’s largest sources of pollution. Switching to biofuels changes this equation. Biofuels do not emit environmental toxins. You do not have to take my word for it. Biofuels have been examined by the EPA and the California Air Resources Board.

One example of this is biodiesel which is made from alcohol like methanol and a chemical process that separates glycerine and methyl esters (biodiesel) from fats or vegetable oils. Aside from methanol, some countries have also experimented with corn and sugarcane to create their own version of biofuel.

Glycerine is used in normal household goods. Glycerine can be found in both toothpaste and soap. Currently, it is very expensive to convert glycerine for biofuels. However, people have reported being able to build a setup to make biofuels for under $200. You would just need a source of raw materials.

But if you look at what you pay for it, the returns are huge because you get to do your share to preserve a cleaner environment, an improvement in air quality and a reduction of cancer-causing agents.

If you are skeptic about biodiesels, studies have shown that its performance on the road is just as good as petroleum in terms of power to efficiency, hauling and climbing. You can use this in its pure form or blend with petroleum fuel. The most common mix in the market is 20/80 and is referred to as B20. This means that 20% is biodiesel and the remainder is 80%. Another version is the E85 which is fuel composed of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.

You could buy a new automobile capable of running on biodiesel. This is not necessary. It is possible to make some engine modifications and run biodiesel in any vehicle. These modifications do not even void your vehicle’s warranty.

Is it too late? Not yet because there is still time to use biofuels and others as green energy sources.

Even when the high offices of leading nations push for renewable energy, they refer to the energy issues as looming threats and future problems. No wonder they are not getting the message across. The reality of the situation is that the energy crisis is already right at our doorsteps. Aren’t we hit with continuously escalating power bills and breathing in toxic smoggy air already? Enough of just talking the walk, the world needs to take action – now!

The situation is getting increasingly compelling by the day. Given the pollution, political conflict and high prices of oil and gas not to mention the sensitivities of the troublesome nuclear power, few will argue with renewable energy nowadays. It’s within reach of a great many of us in the United States. A simple solar system here and a homemade wind generator there and pretty soon, the entire neighborhood will join the green movement as more and more people experience the benefits of renewable energy first-hand.

Solar energy is the direct form of solar to make solar power. All other forms of renewable energy are technically of solar origin. Their panels are quite a common sight in residential housing estates these days and those photovoltaic shingles actually look hip but the best thing about them is that they are much more efficient than before and longer-lasting. The installation of residential solar power is also eligible for various government incentive programs and benefit funds and subsidies.

It’s indirectly a form of solar energy in that wind is temperature-induced air movement as a result of the heat from the sun. Like sunlight, wind is also inexhaustible and basically non-polluting although windmills are known to generate some noise. This will prove to be a wise move as it saves both the green in the forests and in the pockets too.
