Quartz Battery Operated Alarm Clocks versus Mechanical Movement Alarm Clocks

July 31st, 2009
by Paul J. Easton

There are two types of movement for alarm clocks with face and hands. They are the mechanical and quartz battery operated alarm clocks. The old yet iconic mechanical alarm clocks have the traditional bell on top which produces that ringing sound. On the other hand, the simple quartz battery operated alarm clock makes a buzzing sound to wake you up.

In the bell-style alarm clock with mechanical movement, the main spring drives the gear propelling its clacker back and forth. This clacker is usually between the two bells or between the sides if the clacker is inside a single bell. Thus, it produces the common buzzing sound to wake us up.

The quartz battery alarm clock, on the other hand, is a type of clock that utilizes an electric oscillator. This oscillator is regulated by a quartz crystal to keep time with such a level of accuracy. The crystal oscillator produces a precise signal. This makes quartz alarm clocks more accurate than traditional mechanical clocks over a period of time.

Quartz crystals are very accurate, thus this have been its way of winning the competition over the mechanical types of movement. Moreover, the battery powered alarm clock movement is also faster and more economical to mass produce making them less expensive than most mechanical movement alarm clocks.

The Simple But Important Role of Battery Backup in Alarm Clocks

July 29th, 2009
by Paul J. Easton

Some alarm clocks today have features like MP3 players, CD players, and projection displays. But with these sophisticated features, let us never ignore the simple basics of our alarm clocks when purchasing one. One of the necessities in alarm clocks is the battery backup. Alarm clocks’ battery backup is a necessary feature because all the other features would not matter if your alarm clock will not sound on time due to electricity supply failure.

There are two types of battery backups. One of them is the type where clocks use capacitors for electricity storage. This is to keep the clock’s settings including the current time and the alarm time in the instance where there is electricity supply failure for an hour or two. In this type of battery backup, the power stored may not be enough to allow the alarm to sound. However, it hopes to keep the time from resetting just until the electricity supply is restored. With the return of the power, the clock will return to its normal function and alarm on time.

The other type of backup uses batteries for the clocks instead. The batteries likewise work as capacitors. However, the batteries can preserve the clock’s settings for up to a few days while some also allow the alarm to sound too.

The battery backup’s importance can never be ignored. Although it might not allow the clock to function as normal like keeping the clock display well illuminated, the main function of the alarm clock to prevent you from oversleeping is still at work. This is indeed peace of mind for you.

July 17th, 2009
by Paul J. Easton

Busy with daily work and activities? Start your day early and get a battery alarm clock to help you out. Don’t get a winding clock. Winding the clock may get you crazy and some of these clocks would make an insanely loud ticking noise.

The days are over with these inconvenient clocks and you can now purchase a battery alarm clock with all the features you could ever want and everything is portable. And it requires only a single battery. These battery powered clocks are also quite energy efficient and you don’t often need to replace the batteries.

So what are those types of battery powered clock are available in the market? There are numerous options that you may like. Probably the most noticeable type is the old round clock with the two large on top. Thing good thing about this clock in particular is that it is quiet. The solid state movement is perfectly noiseless unless if you want it. Their bell also rings similar to old style clocks.

If you want to get away with modern alarm clocks, then there are many alternatives. LED and LCD clocks are considered to have solid state displays. LED stands for light emitting diode and you cannot miss it. LED clocks are categorized as battery powered devices and must be plugged always to be useful because they consumes too much power, and they normally come in red, green, or amber in color. LCD stands for liquid crystal display and they are very effective power-wise. The only time you use an enormous amount of power is turning on the backlight when it is dark outs. The only drawback is that sometimes you cannot see the LCD display especially in the dark without a light source.

Furthermore, battery alarm clocks are already equipped with many features like temperature readouts, automatic time adjustment with built in radio receivers and other personalized attachments too.

Digital Travel Alarm Clock- A Must-have Companion for a Constant Traveler

July 13th, 2009
by Paul J. Easton

Digital travel alarm clocks are very travel-friendly. No wonder why most people recommend getting one if you are always traveling around the world.

You’ll never know when a digital travel alarm clock can be quite favorable. There are some unreachable places that an outlet is not easily accessible. The battery powered clock easily fits this kind of situation. Most of them are small enough to be easily put in your pocket or purse and then bring it anywhere you go. Although you can place these devices almost anywhere, they still come with a huge variation of features usually also found on their much larger counterparts. I will name some of the extended features below.

Your digital travel alarm clock has lots of available features even though it is small and handy. One of the great features is the automatic adjustment for Daylight Savings Time in which the time of the clock systematically adjusts itself back and forth by an hour for about two times a year. This will cause people to have the unnecessary burden of changing every single clock at their homes during those times. These newer travel alarm clocks have this feature built-in so that you don’t have to worry about changing the time back and forth ever again. Another comparatively new feature is the automatic synchronization to the atomic clock located in Colorado. These clocks have a 60KHz WWVB time synchronization signal which allows them to set the time automatically.

There is also some sports version of the digital travel alarm clock which comes with several features like a built-in flashlight which can be considerably useful especially out in the wild. The new flashlights are mostly equipped with a white LED which is hardier than a conventional lamp. It can even survive a five foot drop unlike the traditional one, in which it would surely break apart. LED also take much less energy to operate making it the ideal choice. Some clocks has a weather radio to tune in and find out if you are about to be caught in a storm. Of course, there are the obligatory AM/FM bands to listen to your favorite news and music stations. Other feature includes a temperature display for you to enable to measure the temperature around you.
