Decorating A Nursery On A Budget

April 26th, 2009
by Anna Holdaway

If youre like most expecting mothers, youve probably got a couple of months until the baby arrives, but you havent started decorating the nursery yet. Maybe youve got a few good ideas, or themes in mind, but no idea how to move forward. It may even be that due to the economic circumstances we live in, money could also be an issue. Whether youre struggling for ideas, or working on a tight budget, wall decals and lettering are great options for creating a unique and creative nursery. Most of the time, youll want to start with a central theme. It could be nursery rhymes, jungles, farm animals, or a princess theme. Whatever your theme may be, you want to start by creating your palette by painting the walls in a color that matches the theme youve chosen. If youre a renter, dont despair, you can leave the walls as they are, and simply choose vinyl lettering colors to match your theme. Once your walls are the color you want, you can proceed by choosing some figurines, toys, and the bedding to match the theme. At this point, you may think that the room is almost complete, but there are many more things you can do inexpensively to kick it up a notch. One way to take your nursery room design to the next level is by utilizing some vinyl graphics and letters. This could include a variety of graphics like animals, cars, shapes, polka dots, stars, etc. The great thing about using vinyl lettering for some wall graphics is that they are fully customizable. You choose the size, graphic, color, etc. Adding cute little vinyl graphics to match your theme is a quick way to add some personality to the walls of the nursery without breaking your budget. There are some great ideas for nursery rooms using vinyl graphics. These include a variety of lovable animals that can be purchased in coordinating colors and multiple sizes. Some vinyl companies give you the option to choose to have these animals done facing the opposite direction. With this, you can have an assortment of vinyl wall animals jumping all around your new baby’s room and it won’t break your decor budget. Another creative way to add some charm to the walls of the nursery is by adding alphabet letters, and numbers. Because your child will spend a good amount of time in his or her room over the next months and years, the alphabet and numbers not only beautify the room, but are functional as well. Gazing at the letters and numbers will give your child a jump start when it comes to learning to count and read. Another great component of a nursery should be some lettering, to include a favorite quote, childrens song, or nursery rhyme. You could even chose to add a monogram with your childs initials above the head of their crib. Many vinyl lettering companies out there, including Wall Stamps Company, sell theme based vinyl lettering kits. You can get kits for Princess themes, Soccer, Farm Animals, etc. These kits are inexpensive, easy to apply, and will go a long way to helping you create the personalized dcor your nursery deserves.

Stenciling for Interior Design Is Becoming Obsolete

April 14th, 2009
by Anna Holdaway

If you’ve been following interior design lately, or watched any of the home improvement shows on television, chances are you’ve seen vinyl lettering being used to decorate. Traditionally vinyl lettering was used only in sign making, such as banners, vehicle lettering, etc. However, with newly available, less tacky vinyl material available on the market, vinyl lettering for home decor is a fast growing trend. Even well known designer Candice Olsen used it in one of her recent episodes to add a little bit of charm to a room. So why vinyl lettering, why now, and how can you utilize this fast growing trend to add decor to any room in your home? Here are four reasons that vinyl lettering for home decor is a fast growing trend:

Vinyl Lettering is Inexpensive.

If youve ever painted you know that the cost for doing so goes well beyond the cost of the paint itself. Elements such as brushes, trays, tape, drop cloths, cleaners, as well as time are all factors that can quickly chip away at your pocket book. Especially if you factor in your own time ” in todays world, time really is money. Once I calculated how much it cost me to repaint one small accent wall in our kitchen. The paint itself was only $50, but when all was said and done, I spent well over $300. The reason that vinyl lettering is so attractive is that you get the same hand painted look, it installs in 20 minutes or less, and you can buy a cart-load of it for $40, making it much more cost effective than painting. And, you can use the extra 2-3 hours it saves you to do something fun with your family.

Vinyl Lettering Isn’t Messy

Another reason that vinyl lettering is quickly replacing hand stenciling is that it’s not messy….no cleanup involved. And best of all, you still achieve a hand painted look. I remember when a friend came to visit that I hadn’t seen in a long time, I showed her my daughter’s room. She loved the little poem I had going along the top of the wall in soft pink. She commented, “wow…that must have taken you forever…did you freehand that?” I should have told her “Yes, it was painstaking.” She would have thought I was amazing. But, I simply told her the truth. It took me about 30 minutes using some pre-cut vinyl lettering.

Temporary Solution

Unlike paint, vinyl lettering can be removed anytime you’d like without damaging your painted walls. This offers the perfect solution for those who are in temporary living spaces such as apartments, rental homes, etc. You get the permanent hand-stenciled look, but with vinyl lettering, you have the option to remove it whenever you’d like. If you want to keep it forever, go ahead. If properly installed it won’t come off until you remove it.

Change It Regularly

Who doesnt like to decorate for the holidays? Ok, maybe none of us like it, but we generally do it anyways dont we? Well, if youre someone who loves to have unique dcor for each of the major holidays, then vinyl lettering will be right down your alley. Thats because with vinyl lettering you can create specific dcor, such as signs, tiles, or wall lettering to match each major holiday. Its even great for decorating for parties, especially kids Birthday Parties! Because its inexpensive, and can be taken down at will, its a great way to decorate for less permanent events.

While there are many different arguments to be made in favor of vinyl lettering over painted stencils, the four mentioned above really do highlight how vinyl lettering trumps painting. Because of its inexpensive price tag, vinyl lettering is also very affordable. There are some great internet companies you can get vinyl wall lettering from online. Give it a try, we think youll soon see why its becoming so popular.

Feng Shui Meets Interior Decor

April 9th, 2009
by Anna Holdaway

Youd have a difficult time finding anyone who wouldnt agree that setting goals is really the best way to achieve your dreams. However, sometimes setting goals is easier said than done.

In many cases we tend to assume that those who actually reach their goals, financial or otherwise, are just lucky, or caught a break. But, in reality, its more likely that those who consistently accomplish their goals have a plan for their success ” and they work their plan. So, how can we set goals, and use our environment to help us achieve those goals? Well, one thing that Ive done recently for some of my clients is to transform their environment so that their goals are ever present. Here are some things that may help you internalize your goals.

1. Written Words. Written goals are more likely to come true than those that aren’t. A great way to visualize and remember your goals are to put them into words. A great way to do this is to add a few inspiring words to the walls of your office, workspace, and home. This can be achieved simply, inexpensively, and without damaging the walls by using vinyl wall lettering, which you can purchase online at websites such as vinylwalllettering.com. Words such as DREAM, INSPIRE, PASSION, etc. followed by a customized quote can act as a reminder of the goals you have set for yourself.

2. Imagery. The power of imagery over our minds is undisputed by almost all psychologists. Seeing is believing. So, make sure you see your goals. If you want a new car, set a picture of what you want as your backdrop, or rent the car you want for a daydrive it.make it yours. Seeing really is believing. If a new home is your goal, go look at new homesthe kind you want. Find one, go and take a tourimagine yourself there.

3. Take Action. Just like love, wanting to reach a goal is not just a feeling, but rather an action. Are your actions leading you towards your goals? If not, what actions will lead you there? Write these actions out, and place them in a visible place, such as part of your wall words, or inspirational vinyl wall lettering.

You may be thinking that this doesnt have much to do with Feng Shui, however it ties into Feng Shui principles because Feng Shui holds that your environment directly impacts your life, happiness, and success. As such, creating an inspiring environment at both home and work is important to helping you achieve your goals. Also, in many casesI have used Japanese Kanji characters along with inspirational quotes from the vinyl lettering site Wall Stamps and the results are always beautiful.

Using Feng Shui and Wall Lettering to Create Inspiring Home Dcor.

April 8th, 2009
by Anna Holdaway

If youve been involved in business, marketing, or networking in any sense over the past 10 years, one thing is for certain. The consensus is that effective goal setting is paramount to achieving anything. Im a firm believer in the principles of Feng Shui, and have found that they can really assist in goal setting and mindset. Heres how.

1. Seeing Your Goals. Goals that are written, and posted in plain sight are much more likely to be met than goals that are just thought. Afterall, goals that arent written are really just dreams rather than goals. A great way to keep your goals in plain view, insuring youll see them day in, and day out is to put them where youll see them every day. A great way to do this is with vinyl lettering affixed to your walls with your written goals on them. You can even combine the goals with an inspirational quote that will help drive and motivate you towards your goals. Goals that are written are like that dirty pile of clothes on your bedroom floorif you look at it there every day, youre more likely to do the wash than if there were tucked away in a closet somewhere. Vinyl wall lettering offers a mechanism for prominently displaying your goals.

2. Images. Images are very powerful reminders of our goals. As the old atage goes: Seeing is Believing. If one of your goals is to own a new car, display an image of it where youll see it every day. This will motivate and drive you to work harder to make your dreams a reality. Visual reminders, such as pictures, are important. With the art of Feng Shui, symbols can be created and placed in prominent locations as a reminder of the goals you have set.

3. Work . How many of us can move a mountain with our mindI mean literally, without taking action. Nobody I know can. Accomplishing goals takes work. You have to make the effort. Once again, a well thought out set of goals is only a dream if youre not willing to put for the effort to make them a reality.

So, what does all of this have to do with Feng Shui anyhow? Well, the things weve talked about are basic principles of Feng Shui in that Feng Shui holds that your environment deeply affects your life, energy, and mindset. Creating an inspiring environment at both home and work is important to helping you achieve your goals. Also, in many cases I have used Japanese characters along with inspiring quotes in vinyl to affix to my walls, and the results are always beautiful.

Expand Your Home Dcor Options with Vinyl Lettering

March 19th, 2009
by Anna Holdaway

Some people may wonder how vinyl lettering has anything to do with home dcor and interior design. Some may even say its a bit tacky. However, in my experience those people are quickly won over once they use decorative vinyl lettering one time in their home. Once youve used it, seen its beauty and how creative you can be in using it to create dcor and crafts, its no wonder to see why its quickly catching on as one of the faster growing trends in interior decoration.

Back in yonder days, vinyl lettering was used for mostly business and industrial applications, such as banners, vehicle, and other signage ” including boat and RV lettering. While vinyl is still used in those applications, its moved into the mainstream of home dcor as a viable alternative to hand painted stenciling. I assume that this is because of the versatility and ability to create unique and inspiring home dcor to match any taste or dcor. For those desiring to create personalized home dcor, vinyl lettering offers many different options.

Home Dcor Tiles. Few things can top the beauty of handmade ceramic tile, except for a tile that has been transformed into a beautiful home dcor piece with the application of a little bit of custom vinyl lettering. How so? Take a beautiful ceramic tile, add a 12 decorative tile lettering kit made from vinyl, and youve got the making of a beautiful home dcor piece. If you calculate your time, cost of paint, margin for error, and cleanup and supplies, vinyl lettering is a better alternative to stenciling.

Decorative Rustic Signboards. One common complaint with wall lettering is that people love it so much, they want to take it with them when they move. While it is inexpensive enough to purchase a new kit, many opt to use the lettering kits to create custom signboards instead. These custom signs can be taken with you wherever you may roam. They also make a fun craft project for childrens and womens groups, and make a terrific Fathers Day present. Give dad a custom sign about fishing, or something that reminds him how much hes loved. A small rustic wooden sign is a great desk piece for the office, and is not expensive to create, but will be a invaluable treasure for any father. To create a sign, simply grab a board (make sure the size of board will fit nicely with the lettering kit. Its sometimes helpful to buy the board first so that you know what size to order the lettering in. However, many online retailers, such as Wall Stamps, offer complete kits that include the board, lettering, and application tool. These kits are nice because you paint the board any color youd like, so you can match your dcor perfectly. Then apply the lettering, and voila! You have a beautiful home dcor piece that you will absolutely love.

Decorative Blocks. Another creative use for vinyl lettering in home dcor is with the use of wooden blocks to create custom home dcor. The blocks are great for creating quick, holiday specific dcor, such as for Halloween, Easter, Christmas, etc. Simply get some scrap 2×4 and 2×6 pieces of wood. Cut them to different lengths, paint them with a color matching the holiday, and then affix one letter per block and stack the blocks to spell out things like Happy Halloween, or Merry Christmas. These blocks are also great for making cute childrens room dcor, specifically for desktop and dresser dcor. What little kid doesnt just love seeing his name on his dresser, and creating the blocks is a fun project for kids to help with. Theyll love the fact that they made it and will cherish the blocks for years to come.

With so many different options, only a few of which are mentioned here, its not difficult to see why vinyl lettering is one of the fastest growing trends in home dcor and design. Simply put, its versatile, inexpensive, custom, and offers many benefits over paint alone. When you consider the time youll save, vinyl lettering is worth its weight in gold.
