How to Establish a Unique Business Online, Not Just an Ecommerce Store

December 26th, 2009

Want to put your business online? Setting up an ecommerce shop or online store, is now easier than ever. And the good news is that this is one of the most rewarding areas of advertising on the Internet…if you know what you are doing.

Here is some advice and pointers on the right way to get your online store set up. By following this advice you will avoid the frequent pitfalls that many novices fall into.

One of the primary considerations to make is “Who will actually build the site?” If you are a hands on type of person, there are options that you can use yourself. One popular choice is to use a Yahoo Store. There is a monthly cost for using their services, but it will permit you to start selling in a short period of time for a reasonable fee.

If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, the next option is to use a store developer. Employ a person that is familiar with the requirements of making sales online. Most developers will customise an existing ecommerce software program for you, although some may design a solution from scratch.

Some of the common programs that they may use include Magento, osCommerce, Zencart and Cubecart. These programs will allow you to upload products to your store and receive online payments.

You can develop a decent store using any of these software solutions. One of the major things that you should look out for is how easy the ‘back-end’ is to use. This is the part of the website that you will use to update your store with new products, modify prices and make general promotions. This is where you will be working on a day-to-day basis so make certain that your web developer gives you a full demo of these features and that you are comfortable with them.

Once your store is on the internet, the fun really begins. Thriving stores are able to make more profits because they have far-reaching statistics available to hand and they are able to make business decisions based on these facts. Here are some of the vital stats that you must have access to: Daily sales, average order amount, daily visitors, where visitors arrive from, the response to online marketing and the best selling items.

You should be able to get this data from most online store software. You can also use Google Analytics on your web site. Google make this package available for free, allowing you to keep an eye on traffic and advertising spend on your site.

You will be able to quickly create an Internet presence by following this advice.

Are You Looking For An Easy Way To Make A Website For Free

November 5th, 2009

Not all that long ago it took a professional web designer and development team to design, program, and implement a website. Prices were expensive and not guaranteed. They needed to be experts in graphics and manipulation, FTP software, C Panels, and search engine technology, even though it was in its infancy. Fast forward to the 21st century, and we find there is more than one easy way to make a website for free.

The entire concept of high level websites has been completely changed over the past few years. Most of the programming has become automated and behind the scenes. Software and “executive programs” have replaced what web designers were originally meant to do decades ago.

And so came the template based websites. Accepted by everyone and used by even large companies, everyone could build a website without knowing HTML, CGI or any other type of code. Template sites became even more robust and not only included the ability to write and build pages and add links, many template sites provided valuable add-ons such as a large selections of headers and graphics, mailing list generation, autoresponders, news feeds, and the ability to design the site to your own specifications. All this for free.

Some of the large search engines even offer their users free websites or at least very cheap websites. A few offer the first year free and after that, it’s a few dollars a month to renew. Other than having the free website though, you need to buy / register a URL. This isn’t absolutely necessary, however. You could have your company name as a sub file for the hosting company. A bit less professional, but much cheaper.

The difference would be similar to this: www.yahoo.freesites.yourcompanyname.com vs. Having your own domain name, which would be www.yourcompanyname.com. Either is acceptable, but it all depends on what you’re selling. There’s a certain level of professionalism that is expected, and your domain name is very important.

Another option is to use a blog site as your website. Some blogging sites are better than others depending on how much you can manipulate it or add your own code. Certain blogs provide a variety of templates, and each one can use certain gadgets or widgets that can be customized to your needs. Other than that, most of these websites will be very similar.

There are many websites and companies out there that provide all sorts of templates that allow you to build a website for free, but after you build your free website you will need to pay for monthly hosting charges. Depending on the features provided to you in order to build your free website will depend on how much you are expected to pay for your hosting charges. A simple one page sales letter type website is going to be much less than a multiple page site with links, shopping cart functionality, and SEO management.

Free doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap” or unattractive. There are some superb websites out there that were done using free services they found online. Not just tiny companies, but companies that do business nationally or even internationally. Business owners have finally realized that there is no need to spend hundreds of dollars a month to have someone on call to update their site on a regular basis. They do it themselves, for free, using user friendly template services. Why pay for something when you get it for free?

Content Management System – DotnetNuke

October 14th, 2009
by Anne Torres

Anyone who has tried DotNetNuke content management will agree that it is, by far, the best innovation in terms of website creation. Not only does it allow one to put up a good website. It also offers the administrators and the rest of the web design team a lot of freedom without having to deal with torturous web programming languages.

That’s because this type of management system has made the task a lot simpler by offering an interface that is so easy to use. Non-technical users can very well come up with a good web design just by following quick and simple instructions from installation to operation. Indeed, this technology has given businessmen more capabilities in controlling their websites because now, they have a more in-depth understanding of the processes that will be involved as they create their online presence.

It is sometimes unbelievable that an everyday user could design and create a website without knowing one web programming language. It is, of course, very much probable these days with DotNetNuke making the process so much easier. Aside from that, businessmen are going to benefit from this type of management system for the reason that it is both cost and time-efficient even as it allows for more detailed customization.

On top of that, this system does not need users any type of license, which means anyone can use it. It is an open-for-all software which can be used both privately and commercially without restrictions.

One of the most outstanding properties of this software is its flexibility through its Delete Portal feature which allows a webmaster to manage multiple websites with just one installation. That means from several portals, it is possible to maintain the different sites through centrally located portals. It is important, however, to restrict these portals to a healthy size, otherwise, it could affect performance. The system also allows restrictions on number of allowed users for each one.

DotNetNuke custom modules also makes it even easier for webmasters to run the project on per aspect basis from templates to portal options. Developers are also continually adding features to the system, thus allowing for growing functionality.

Web Hosting Plans – What to Look For

October 8th, 2009
by Nicholas Halmond

The World Wide Web is filled with millions of websites and the number keeps growing as new websites are launched every single day. The only thing that these websites have in common is that they are all located on computers or servers that have an online connection. Therefore, for your website to be hosted 24/7, it is best to go for the various web hosting plans so your website stays online with security and reliability in mind.

When you want to make sure that you have chosen the right web hosting plan, consider your needs and what you want your website to do. There are several different types out there, so look below.

If You Have A Personal Site

Personal websites are websites that do not have a primary goal to make online. They are intended to be for informative purposes and usually end up small having little downloadables and sometimes picture galleries to see. Free web hosting plans are the best option as their simple layouts do not cause hindrance in viewing even if the server specs are low.

Remember that there are definitely personal websites that offer more services and there is no telling if you are going to get popular. Remember that you might want to upgrade if the speed of the site becomes a problem. Look for a web host with a good upgrading policy if you feel that you might need to at some point.

Blogs, Forums, Corporate Sites, and Multimedia Sites

If you are engaging in something that many people are going to come and look at and work with, you might find that due tot he complexity of the site and the number of visitors that you are going to need to look into cheap hosting plans. They don’t charge you much, and if you put some time into shopping, you will find that they can give you some great service at the same time.

When you are looking for good hosting services, remember that you are going to need to make sure that you can account for all the resources that you have set up. Do you need things like a lot of bandwidth, dedicated server space or other extra features? Make sure that you decide on what you want before you buy.

Sites Expecting High Traffic

When you are looking at how many visitors you can expect every day, you’ll discover that you will need to hosting to match that. Remember that you can always purchase a cheaper site before moving on to upgrade. Consider your needs with care and make sure that you know what is going on on your site before you start looking for other resources for it.

If your website has a lot of traffic and offers lots of multimedia downloads, it might be time to take a look at dedicated server plans. Video streaming and podcasting are two big offenders and the hosting that they need is not cheap but in many cases it is going to be worth it. This is where you need to get well placed ads to even out your expenses.

There is always a web hosting plan that fits perfectly for a certain webmaster and his or her website. Base your choice on what type of website you have. If you have some money to spare, the safest choice would be to go with the cheap hosting plans as they are affordable and usually do not disappoint.

Working With Images Via The Assets Panel In Adobe Dreamweaver

October 7th, 2009
by Elliot Harris

Graphics, whether functional or artisistic, are a key component in any website and are extremely important in communicating key messages to website visitors. Since a web page consists entirely of textual markup, images cannot be embedded in a web page. Rather a reference to the image is placed in the markup and the visitor’s browser uses this reference to display the correct image. Adobe Dreamweaver offers three basic methods of adding images to a web page. The standard method is to use the menu command: Insert – Image or to click on the equivalent icon from the Insert Panel. However, Dreamweaver offers two convenient alternatives: firstly, the Files Panel and, secondly, the Assets Panel.

The Files Panel shows a list of all of the files and folders within the site in a manner not dissimilar to Windows Explorer or the Macintosh Finder. If you know the name of the image you want to add to the page, you can simply drag it from the Files Panel directly onto your page.

The Assets Panel is basically a database which provides a categorized and automatically generated list of elements available not only in the current site but also in other sites defined on your computer. The elements it keeps track of include images, colours and Flash movies. To work with image assets, simply activate the Assets Panel (using the menu command Windows – Assets) then click on the Image category. As you highlight each image, a thumbnail preview is displayed at the top of the Assets Panel. To insert an image, either drag the image onto the page or highlight the image and click the Insert button.

Naturally, the location of some of the images that you insert from the Assets Panel may not be within the local root folder of the site that you are currently working on. Dreamweaver has a useful way of ensuring that you don’t end up with broken images on your page. When defining your site, Dreamweaver includes the option of specifying a “Default Images Folder”. The folder you specify here will be used by Dreamweaver to ensure that all images you add to your pages are inside the local root folder.

Let’s take a simple example. Say you use the Assets Panel to add an image to one of your web pages but that the physical location of the image is in different site. No problem! Dreamweaver will automatically copy the image into the default images folder and then create a reference to this local version of the image on the current page.

What Requires Special Attention when Designing a Web Page?

October 5th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

When designing a web page, one has to consider how they are going to attract and retain visitors. One way of reaching online users is to design a website that ranks high in the search engines. Achieving a high search ranking requires creating a web page that is search engine friendly.

To build a search engine friendly web page, one should implement the following tools:

1. When a search engine ranks a website, they assess the value of the content. Web content needs to be relevant to the website’s purpose and rich in relevant key words. Relevant keywords should be included in the headlines. As well, the content has to be relevant to the site’s product or service. The text should be easy to read and free of spelling and grammar errors. The page should have an introduction and conclusion with a clear purpose of the site. Try to update your web page with fresh content regularly.

2. The design and layout of the site should be professional and unique. Pages should be quick to load so you should use small graphics and pictures that are professional and relevant to the site. Every image should have an “alt” label and a text link. Bright colors, irrelevant pictures, and odd flashing animation will result in a low search engine ranking. The layout should be consistent with uniform colors. The web page should be easy to navigate and the various applications should blend well. The site’s navigation bar should be clear with professional titles. As well, your contact information should be easy to locate. A site map is an important part of the web design. You should also make sure that you do have any “page not found” error pages. Every page should include the appropriate domain name and professionally designed logo.

3. Make your web design interactive. This will give your site a boost in search engine rankings. You can use such applications as a Blog, chat room, surveys, polls, discussion boards, contests, user feed back forms, etc.

4. Reciprocal linking is important to achieving a high search engine ranking. These links should be relevant to your site. Consider posting to business directories. Don’t use link farms and other low quality link sites as they will only lower your search engine ranking. Embed text links in your content paragraphs to increase your ranking.

A professional website design tells a visitor and search engine robot that your site is professional and trustworthy. Search engine spiders and robots score professional websites high in the search engines. Because a high search engine ranking is so important, designing a web site takes time and good planning. There are professional web site design companies that are experts in creating web pages that achieve high search engine rankings. Using a web design company will significantly increase your search engine ranking.

Because the majority of online users use a search engine to locate a website, it is essential that your web pages are designed to be search engine friendly.

Instructions for Web Designs that Work

October 5th, 2009
by Anne Torres

There are a lot of strategies that a businessman can use to prop up his products or services. In this cyber day and age, though, it’s all about websites. And when it comes to website marketability, it can only be about web design. For this reason, every online businessman should devote a good portion of his time ensuring that his web site is handled with only the uncompromising standards of a reputable web design company such as STL Web Solutions. While it is easy to be confident about a professional designer’s capabilities, a good businessman will always want to stay on top of things beginning with a good knowledge of what makes effectual and unproductive websites.

Without a doubt, content is still the undisputed “king” and this goes for all websites ever created. Search engines love good content and no matter how effectively seemingly optimized a page is, it still won’t get a good search ranking if its content isn’t worth a read. In other words, with all other technical aspects of web design ironed it, content rules in site indexing by the search engines.

Although the more important element in qualifying good content is the quality of information it offers, the way it is visually presented also makes a lot of difference. However, dissimilar types of businesses will require different approaches to this presentation as well.

For instance, an insurance company’s site will probably fare better with Internet users if it has neutral colors with an Arial font on it. On the other hand, if you’re an talking about an advertising company’s site, bolder and more adventurous shades and fun fonts might be needed to allow the creativity to flow.

Next to content, graphics will contribute much to how a site performs with the people who will likely end up or not end up in it. Some designers tend to lose themselves in creating visual attractions for the pages they create. However, the most important factor to be considered when incorporating graphics into a page is the time it takes to download it.

Bear in mind, anything that takes too long to will probably be lost to a clickaway because Internet users usually don’t want to wait. They want their information in seconds and if a site doesn’t deliver on this, they usually move on to the next one that does. In other words, graphics may serve a site well but only when kept to a minimum number and size. But even so, the contrary may be true for certain types of sites where animation is essential such as those maintained by web design companies where the designers’ skills are actually being marketed.

What You Need to Know About Dreamweaver.

October 5th, 2009
by Theobald Jarvis

About Dreamweaver: Originally produced by Macromedia and currently by the Adobe Systems, Dreamweaver is an application for web development. With the help of Dreamweaver, which integrates different aspects of web development including site management, page creation and web server tools, users can get a good outlook of the whole website. Various technologies like JavaScript, CSS and several frameworks and serverside scripting languages like ASP, ColdFusion and PHP have been given support by the new versions of the application. Both Windows Operating Systems and Mac supports Dreamweaver.

Features: Though Dreamweaver is a hybrid WYSIWYG and an application of code based web development and design, its WYSIWYG mode is able to hide from the users, the pages’ HTML code details which make the creation of sites and web pages possible even for non-coders. The creation of table based layouts is very easy with this application. In the recent versions, the application has focused on supporting the standard based layout with the ability of converting tables to layers.

The locally installed websites in the web browsers can be previewed by the users using Dreamweaver. Site management tools like FTP, SFTP and WebDAV features of synchronization and file transfers, templating features which help in the source update of shared code and layout of the whole sites without the server side includes and scripting, are present in this application. It also has the ability to use regular expressions and search items to find and replace code or text lines across the full site.

The third party ‘extensions’ can be used by Dreamweaver for enabling and extending the application’s main functionality. Many extension developers, who make available the free and commercial extensions, support Dreamweaver for many web development tasks ranging from fully featured shopping carts to simple effects of rollover. Also the files can be edited locally by Dreamweaver, and using WebDAV, SFTP and FTP, upload them into the remote web server similar to the other HTML editions.

Drawbacks of Dreamweaver: Dreamweaver has the potential of producing HTML pages with file size and HTML code amount bigger than a page which is optimally hand coded. This is a drawback, as it causes the poor performance of the web browsers. Earlier, many website developers have criticized Dreamweaver for producing codes which do not comply many times with the standards of W3C. There has also been a poor performance by the Dreamweaver 8.0 on the Acid 2 Test that had been developed by Web Standards Project.

Syntax Highlighting: Syntax Highlighting is supported by the latest versions of Dreamweaver for the languages like ActionScript, ASP.Net, Active Server Pages, C#, ColdFusion, Cascading Style Sheets, EDML, Extensible Markup Language, HyperText Markup Language, Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations, Java, JavaServer Pages, JavaScript, PHP, Visual Basic, VB Script and Wireless Markup Language. For many of the above mentioned languages, code completion is available and you can also add to its repertoire, your own language syntax highlighting.

Language Availability: The Adobe Dreamweaver comes in several languages like English, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Russian, Swedish, Korean, Turkish, Polish, Japanese, Portuguese, Brazilian, Chinese Simplified and Chinese Traditional.
