So You Want To Buy Wholesale…

Most people know that to buy wholesale is less expensive than buying retail. The basic idea is that the more you buy of a single item the less you pay. There are several major wholesale clubs that are based on this basic concept. You, the consumer, can buy more for less money.

There is a basic annual membership fee to pay to belong to one of these wholesale clubs. There is also an exclusive membership available for additional money that offers perks that the basic members cannot take advantage of. However the big question is does the average consumer actually save money in the long run when they buy wholesale at one of these clubs?

In a struggling economy, every dollar counts and no one wants to spend money foolishly. The average basic membership fees range from $45 to $55 annually to have the privilege to buy wholesale. This does not seem like a lot but if you are not saving money you might as well pay an annual fee to enter your favorite grocery store.

Whether or not you save money trying to buy wholesale depends mostly on you and the choices that you make. Shopping without list or a clear idea of what you need you will not save you money, regardless of what store you in. But if you shop with clear intent and product knowledge you can make the wholesale clubs work for you. Be honest and know what type of shopper that you are and how to tailor your spending habits so that you are always saving money.

Understanding that price per unit is the key to deciphering whether or not you are getting the most bang for your buck. To buy wholesale items means that the items are usually sold in larger quantities than retail stores, so going to by the overall price will not give you an accurate result when doing your price comparisons. Steak is a good example of this. They come in various shapes and sizes, so two steaks might have the same amount of meat as four steaks, depending on how they are cut. However if you know that the steak at the wholesale store sells their meat five cents lower per pound than a retail store, you can clearly see where the savings can be found.

Price per unit is important because wholesale stores are trying to make a profit when they can. Many of their items you can buy wholesale but some maybe marked as the same price as those in retail stores. They are hoping that you either do not notice or that you will choose not to deal with the hassle of driving to another store. Coupons are a great way to save additional money at the wholesale stores.

Again, bring a list and stick to it. It is a store purpose to entice people to buy more than what they set out to. Food displays are set up to bring attention to them and to encourage you to buy more. And a lot of items are placed right as you enter the store to make you think that they are specially discounted.

To buy wholesale or to buy retail will not matter if you are buying things that you do not need but just had to have because you knew were getting a bargain.
